Similar comments here, as on the BBC 4 discussion site (but I suggest you check it out because the programme seemed to trigger off more comments than normal for a documentary).

Have to agree, Mr Peel comes out in a poor light from what he remembers in that documentary, suggesting long term hypocracy if he played this music on Perfumed Garden , Top Gear etc. and (in his word, repeated several times) and 'always thought it was "crap"'. However, I like his comparison, 'I could cope with the O Levels but thought prog rock was A levels'. Perhaps one thing in defence of Mr Peel: it has always been said if you remember the 60's you couldn't been there - maybe this condition lasted until the mid 70's in his case? BTW have you discovered Keith Emerson's response to Peel's knocks? On the Castle Records compo "Here Come The Nice", there is an ad narrated by Peel, in praise of their music.

However, at least somebody has done a prog documentary, beit with a strange assortment of pundits.

So Peel's comments about ELP being 'A Tragic Waste Of Talent and Electricity' (circa 1970) was championing prog rock??! He also made no secret of his loathing for Yes which at the time he considered to be worse than ELP!

Peel WAS the champion of prog back in the day, but the turncoat went all punk on us to keep his job at the beeb, and to try and stay relevant to "the kids" (say with Rick Mayell voice). These days he's a right slipper wearing old fart.
Now is tomorrow afternoon

John Peel 'champion of progressive rock in the early seventies'. ~Scratches head~.

I didn't like this particular programme about prog rock.It was biased and very 'anti' as evidenced by the fact that John Peel was recruited to give his opinions on music he so obviously loathes. If it was a programme about punk then a totally different approach would have been taken.

The rock family tree programme about ELP and Yes (narrated by John Peel oddly) was very good though.

i was disappointed with those programmes. I felt that they didn't even try to explain the excitement of prog and john peel.....what a prat!!!! he only dislikes ELP because he thought Keith should never have left The Nice, but after Peel's "word of wisdom" the programme kind of focused on Punk....WHAT?!?!
