According to Northwestern University, people who listen to and enjoy The Mars Volta have an IQ of between 40%-50% higher than those who don't.
Conclusive proof there that The Mars Volta are in fact a band for intelligent people.

Worst prog bands? Probably MAGENTA and NOW (the Belgian band).
MAGENTA are pleasant and inoffensive enough, but they essentially
embody all the worst aspects of prog - pretentious conceptual lyrics
signalling lacking any real insight, "refined" symphonic playing without
fire and emotion, and songs extended to four or five times their natural
length for no other reason than to prove their "prog" credentials.
NOW are simply hard rock-cum-neoprog at its worst, with basic and
uninteresting musicianship, poor songwriting and a vocalist with a
strangulated yowl who quickly gets on my nerves. Also, they decided to
cover LED ZEPPELIN's "Kashmir", for no good reason that I can discern (as,
to her discredit), did LANA LANE.
On the other hand, I could see people who like their neoprog particularly
undemanding might loving both these bands.

I never really understood the existance of ELP. I remember reading an artilce by John Peel when he says he remembers the first time he saw ELP he was close to tears. He knew from that point on, the underground scene was dead. He hated them too.

Hard to say because if you find a bad band you wouldn't get all their recordings and maybe there are some gems among the trash. I got one styx record (cornerstone) and thought this is as bad as it gets

I think that 'The Worst' often comes out at a time
when a movemnent becomes popular almost overnight, and everyone decides
to pick up a guitar overnight and have a go. This rarely happens
in prog, because it isn't popular enough, but take your mind back to
some of the truly awful Punk bands that formed in Britain in the late
70's...(remember The Vibrators?) no talent but could get a record deal
because of the overnight appeal of the movement.
The only example I can think of personally in prog, are the number
of Teutonic Prog Metal bands out there, which are all highly
derivitive, and add nothing to the genre... because Prog metal is
popular on the continent.
My personal choice for this section would be 'Angra', who I think are truly awful. |
I just want to point out that one member of the Vibrators, John Ellis,
was a member of Peter Hammill's K-group, who recorded "Enter K",
"Patience" and the live double album "The Margin" (now re-issued as
"The Margin +" with nine additional tracks).

You're defending an idiot point and I have an IQ Problem? Yes, Genesis, Camel, Renaissance, and all the classic symphonic bands ARE POPPY COMPARED TO RIO ONES. All have boring sing along and easy assimilation passages. Only the fans of progressive rock know Novalis today, but they're miles ahead Yes or Genesis. And, be sure, nobody besides prog fans remember IQ or Pendragon or any crap Neo-Prog band today. If you doubt, go out on the streets and make a poll.
A thing don't need to be remembered by everyone to be eternal. If one person remembers it, god, it will always be eternal.
And who the f**k are you to define what's a time classic and what's not? A thing to be good must be a masterpiece, a true classic?

Sorry, but this strikes me as incredibly funny. You are certainly right saying that bands like Genesis or Camel are "poppy" compared to RIO (and Camel doesn't do it for me at all, whilst early Genesis still have their moments, although I prefer some stronger medicine today). But then you go and name, of all bands, Novalis as being miles ahead of them. Novalis, who are rather boring and, in my honest opinion, have the worst drummer in prog (and believe me, I know what I'm talking about, being a drummer myself). And who are certainly at least just as "poppy" as Genesis before their decline into absolute pop (just listen to "Sommerabend"). I really don't know what to think of that.

I truly dislike Höyry-Kone... They are talented musicians, but I don't like their style, humor, aestethics etc.
I was severely shocked few years ago, as they were performing with Anekdoten and Alamaailman vasarat at Tavastia (rock club in Finland). The scenery was this: Anekdoten is the "warm-upper" to Höyry-Kone, and ANEKDOTEN "DIDN'T HAVE TIME" TO PLAY THEIR WHOLE SET LIST, 'CAUSE THEY HAD TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE "MAIN ATTRACTION". F**k. I had to leave the building.
Luckily this year, as Anekdoten were playing in Finland, THEY were the main feature, and Ageness (which infested the event) could be skipped. That band also displeases me because of the same elements, as H-K.
It seems like I'm quite lousy patriot. Luckily here's Uzva, Hidria Spacefolk, Tasavallan Presidentti etc.

This thread bashes so many incredible bands. Genesis, Yes, King Crimson. People are saying your more intelligent if you listen to the mars volta. It's only absurd. I can't believe the arguements went on for 7 pages.
