Topic: What’s this crap, now? Posted: July 07 2005 at 22:14 |
As much as I hate to do this, this thread has spiralled so far off
topic that I feel it needs to be locked. Maybe we can try it
again if Teaflax decides to calm down...

Only if you're Swedish. Because despite the many, many different styles and dialects, only his is right, and if you put a pause in the wrong place, he'll slit your throat.

The only thread I've been seriously antagonistic in has been the "Prog ruleth all forms of Art and all Punk Rockers are vermin" one, where there were some people who needed a severe clipping about the ears.

If you do that in Sweden, you get asked who the hell you think you are, why in the world you would care, and why should they change it since "people understand what it says anyway". The lack of respect for the language here is staggering. You can't grasp it until you've lived here.

Yes, but it moves towards clarity and the written language getting closer to the spoken word.
I'm not generally a prescriptivist, but what's happening in Swedish is the exact opposite.

Working as a translator, I don't know how often I hear people telling how much Swedish sucks as a language (I'm sure it's almost weekly). And then they'll praise English, and how they understand it so well that they don't need to read the subtitles on TV. After that, they'll be introduced to my American wife, and hardly be able to keep up a running conversation with her. It's just sad.

Hmm..., Alien music, now there's an idea!
Indeed, the English language is getting butchered beyond recognition
now and it bugs me to be honest. The whole invention of
texting/chat-rooms means that the shorthand people use, is becoming the
standard nowadays.
I type reasonably fast, so typing sentences out fully is no extra
hardship for me and people get what I mean too. I still get
confused with texting shorthand and I'm 24!
I have noticed something amongst us progsters and that is that we are a very literature bunch.
James.

My friend's reaction to some song from "Division Bell" (I forgot which it was):
- What's that?
- "Pink Floyd"
- Ah, the music you should listen to when doped up ...

I think most "ordinary" people are just so unprepared for prog. They think all music should sound just like "radio".
I bet prog sounds to them just like the alien music would sound to me!

English isn't anything like it originally was either, it gets changed on a near-daily basis.
And that site's hilarious.
Anyway, if the gay comedian made a gay joke in a tongue-in-cheek, silly
manner that showed he wasn't serious about it, I would not be
offended. An example would be if he talked about a time he
started lisping heavily at a job interview. Of *course* he
wouldn't really do that, it's just silly to say it.
I know that Swedish is a beautiful and expressive language, I
especially love the pitch and rhythm of it. When Roine said there
were "four words", no one got the idea that it was a non-expressive
language. Hell, he used to write songs entirely in Swedish.
And during the set, he talked to his keyboardist, Tomas, in
Swedish. If anyone thought he was serious about the "four words"
thing, they'd be immediately corrected at that point.
