1: The Doors (I think they have quite a proggy sound)
2: Led Zeppelin
3: Dimmu Borgir (Symphonic Black Metal, just try Puritanical Euphoric Misantrophia)
4: The Nits (terific Dutch band with former Supersister keyboardist Robert-Jan Stips)

1. Steely Dan (Simply one of the best bands ever)
2. Chicago (I consider their first 7 albums prog, but I realize I'm the only one in the universe who thinks that way)
3. The Who (especially Tommy, Who's Next, and Quad)
4. The Beatles (Especially after they got heavily into drugs)
5. The Beach Boys (Especially once they stopped playing their own instruments and Brian did LSD)

Great list. You may be the only person in the universe to think that Chicago's first SEVEN records were prog, but I'll back you up on their FIRST record for sure!
I'd say Beatles, Dan, Zeppelin, Beach Boys, and Dave Mason probably...

A lot of you people are either stuck in the past or restricted to one single genre.
...
Okay, I was about to post my list, then I realised I would contradict the first sentence of my message.
Laugh at Ronnie!

The Black Crowes - great blues/rock band.
Buddy Rich - in my opinion, the most skilled jazz musicians ever.
The Flaming Lips - please don't make fun of me.
The Rolling Stones - my favorite british invasion band.
Toots and The Maytalls - superb reggae, better than Bob Marley.
