Topic: Bass Players Posted: July 02 2005 at 02:02 |
Which style do you prefer? Finger technique, Picking or use both depending on the situation.
My primary instrument is a Fender fretless Jazz bass and prefer finger style.

I use a pick 99% of the time, but since a pick doesn't allow for the low notes to really come through on my Ibanez BTB 5-string, I sometimes have to pluck a few notes. I actually honestly prefer the sound most players get with their fingers, and I think that my tone could be better if I played fingerstyle, but I've never managed to work up to it.

Generally I can't escape the pick either, and only use fingers for effect.
I'm the same on guitar - I don't concentrate on bass so much these days now that I'm in a two-person collaboration (can't really call it a band!).
Fingers are definitely better - you can be a lot more expressive and play more quickly when the need arises, but it takes a lot of practice - something I don't get much time for, but should have found time for when I was younger.
Let that be a lesson to you young 'uns

Fingers... I play double bass as well so I find it easier and prefer the sound, I used to use a plectrum a bit but not very often, I still have a go at guitar occasionally.

Strictly fingerstyle for me, I've NEVER been able to play bass with a pick, it just just feels weird and clunky to me.
Guitar though is totally different, with that, I'm a hardcore pick player with some fingerpicking mixed in.

I have always played finger style
because it's so hard to find a "good" bass player and when I became
"good" I wanted to look even better playing with my fingers. Playing
this way also makes the transition to classical/flamenco guitar a bit
easier.
Right now i'm using a Fender Fretless Jazz Bass.

Some of my favorite bass players use a pick oddly enough.

Hellmut Hattler is certainly one of the virtuosos of the bass, and he uses a pick too.

He is indeed! I saw him with KRAAN at NEAR Fest 2 years ago or so, it was a VERY fun set as I recall! Helmut really tor it up that afternoon.

Fingerstyle for me.
Time ago I used to think that pick was for bad bass players who couln't use the fingers, then I saw Chris Wood and I closed my mouth. However, I prefer fingering for the sound, and the possibility of using the thumb and making some chords.
I use a 5-strings Dean, but I'd like to get a 6-String fretless, but once I'm able to manage the one I already have.

I use pick and fingers equally I think. Whatever suits the song, imo.

I prefer the finger sound, but I use pick whenever I want a jagged Squire sound. My favorite bassist also used a pick at times... and his name is John Entwistle.

Fingerstyle most of the time.
I hate using a pick except for guitar, even then I rarely use a pick.
My primary bass is a Fender American Deluxe Fretless Jazz Bass

Finger style looks and sounds sexy; pick sounds and looks hard.
