It is more like a mother that gave birth to a bunch of children. All of the children go off into different directions, some have similarities, some don't.

Or is it a load of refugees coming from the four corners of the globe of music, huddling under the crude shelter of Prog?

I think prog is just a (relatively) new name for symphnoic rock. The subgenres are out of place maybe. I think only bands like Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd are original prog rock bands. Should we change the name of the site?

if a genre is a category meant to overly simplify a group's musical explorations and lump them all together...then yep.

either that or i'm talking about prog's subcategories.

I think its a sub genre of avant-rock (as i call it) avant rock also contains post-rock, jazz fusion, krautrock, some electronica-rock. prog could also be considered a sub genre of art rock, but not the other sub genres the site has.
