1. Pain Of Salvation- No words can adequately describe how awesome this band is
2. Queensryche- Classic Progressive Metal combo, reinvented the style
3. Ayreon

That's interesting. I was actually surprised that Ayreon was listed as Prog Metal here. I would have put them somwhere between Symphonic Prog and Space Rock. Some of the Ayreon material is clearly metal (Universal Migrator), but most of the other stuff is "just" prog rock with a more heavy guitar tone and metal guitar solos.

Personally, i agree with you. I really dont hear much of a metal sound on thier records. I have Into the Electric Castle and heard bits of (but most of it) The Human Equation. I was suprise to hear they were prog metal. O well...maybe thats why i like them

Sorry!
But I think that they are not hot contenders for award "THE best PROG metal band". They are very good, that's a given.

Cynic (unfortunately not on the list)
Most of the others are very good though (PoS, Fates Warning, Meshuggah, Opeth). I never really got into Symphony X though...

I AM SURPRISED TO SEE HOW UNDERATED FATES ARE. I FOUND IT DEFICULT TO FIND ANOTHER BAND THAT COMBINES EMOTIONAL PLAYING WITH SUPERB TECHNIC.
PARALELS AND PLEASANT SADE OF GRAY ARE DIAMONDS OF PROG MUSIC.
MATHEOS´ RIFS ARE MUCH MORE ´´INTELIGENT´´ THAN PETRUCCI´S PANTERA LIKE IDIAS
AND MARK ZONDER IS PROBABLY THE MOST CREATIVE METAL DRUMMER,
AND THE LYRICS. DT COULD NOT EVEN DREAM OF SUCH DEPTH.
ENJOY

Exactly.
Fates are really serious about everything they do. They just had loads of bad luck in the early 90s and didn't get the attention they deserved. Prog Metal fans should have tracks like
* The Apparition
* Epitaph
* The Sorceress
* Guardian
* The Ivory Gate of Dreams
* At Fates Hands
* The Eleventh Hour
* A Pleasant Shade of Gray Part XII
* Still Remains
* Another Perfect Day
in their collections. Most of them are simply essential - well, for me anyway as I tend to prefer originals to epigones.
