01 Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian
02 Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
03 Fates Warning - The Spectre Within
04 Voivod - Nothingface
05 Dream Theater - When Dream and Day Unite
06 Queensryche - Rage for Order
07 Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
08 Psychotic Waltz - Into the Everflow
09 Dream Theater - Images and Words
10 Psychotic Waltz - A Social Grace
11 Voivod - The Outer Limits
12 Dream Theater - Awake
13 Watchtower - Control and Resistance

And I could add

Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King
Savatage - Gutter Ballet
Crimson Glory - Crimson Glory
Crimson Glory - Transcendence

as they're listed in the Archives but they do not necessarily belong here. They don't play Prog but POWER METAL, one is influenced by Queen, the other's heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin.

Honourable mention:

Enchant, a brilliant band with a brilliant singer, one of the best voices of all time. Unfortunately, they haven't managed to write their definitive magnum opus.

Yes, well ... err ... uhm ... I'd say it's an album of transition from power metal to prog metal. It's generally regarded as one of the first real prog metal albums. Ask Mr Portnoy, he'll say the same, and apart from that he'll say that "The Spectre Within" and "Awaken the Guardian" embodied the direction his then new band 'Majesty' had to take (in his opinion). So, for me it's really okay to call it early 'prog metal' (with lots of Black Sabbath influences of course).

(Just today I've bought the new remastered edition:

Disc 1: Remaster;
Disc 2: Demos & Live Bootleg;
Disc 3: Live-DVD, bootleg quality, historical document

--- and it's forking amazing! )

Uhm, and your top 15 collection is mostly excellent IMO, e.g. these choices:

Very few people can remember these albums today. Mekong Delta were strangely fantastic! I'm almost tempted to add Celtic Frost's innovative "Into the Pandemonium" to the list.

i believe that mekong delta was the mostly underground band of heavy metal, i still remember a reporter in a greek magazine who gave 10 out of 10 for their cover in pictures at an exhibition and wrote: mr emerson you took your metal answer

Yes, the new album by the Holzwarth brothers ("The Art of Navigating by the Stars") is going to be released on September 26. Just check out their website for further details.

(Unfortunately, "Steps" had that lousy singer but "A Sense of Change" was really okay IMO, a bit like a splintered, fragmented version of "Hemispheres" by Rush. But to be honest I lost my interest afterwards and never listened to the later albums.)

How could I forget both LTE albums?

Add Liquid Tension Experiment- 1 and 2 and then delete Kamelot- Epica and Evergrey- The Inner Circle off my list.

if you listen to sophisticated and uneven you might be dissapointed, because they changed their style a lot to something more powerfull with a lot of solos and much heavier than steps and sense of change. IMO they are both great (sophisticated and uneven) eventhough they don't reach the high levels of steps and sense of change.
