Topic: String Driven Thing Posted: June 29 2005 at 06:04 |
These guys were on the Charisma label (at the VDGG, Genesis , Audience times) and were certainly progressive/experimental. They are as difficult as The Third Ear Band.
So prog or not? Inclusion or not?

Don't forget Capability Brown from your list - my copy of Keep Death The Road (Drive On The Pavement), on an album bought from a radio station, had been scratched to death and so skips madly, therefore I'm longing for a remastered CD or two.

I vote YES. "Heartfeeder" from album "Machine That Cried" is one of the better prog anthems, including violinists Graham Smith, who would join VDGG afterwards. I don't know well the rest of the album but this song is a prog highlight.

I say yes because IMO The Machine that cried could easily have been a vdgg album! It's certainly prog!

Oh the lips cover.................................. could have a similar effect as the two Flash fold-out album sleeves

I would say String Driven Thing are progressive. I Like Black-Eyed Queen - not sure which album though.

Hey progsters...String driven thing are most certainly
(imo) progressive.
"The machine that cried" are an excellent choice
and please....notice that there are a copy of this gem
circulating (dont know wheter its a boot)with the
subtitle: "The machine that cried" The band´s official
version. Which i believe.....is the actual album...
with the full length song´s...as originally intended
by String driven thing!!!
Oh..and by the way..Capability Brown´s :"Voice"
(yes..the one with the lips) are absolutely brilliant
pop prog....with masterful vocal arrangements and
fabulous music!! So..dear progsters happy hunting!!
Tonny.

Uhmmm...what a lovely wantlist you provided, Dick Heath.
I remember all of those wonderful bands/solo artists
..oh..yes im that old (not really in my mind..though!)
There are some wonderful stuff in there...NOW..how do we the prog society get the owners of those long lost
groups/solo artists to acknowledge that we really NEED
to get these brilliant artists out on cd!!??
Maybe we should all chant (same day..same time):
" We need Charisma-artist´s NOW !!"
Tonny.

Hmm...
Had The Machine That Cried album years ago, hated it and quickly sold
it. Sorry, I can't remember anything about it so I have no opinion as
to whether or not it is prog. Oh no, it appears that I have nothing to
add to this discussion....ABORT, ABORT!

Dick,
quite a list you found there. No doubt, now Charisma was a major prog label. I was a little surprised that Brand X got a UK release under Charisma. Nice to see the month of release also, an info all too rarely present on both vinyls and Cds.
Can you tell me anything about ATACAMA (two albums), for that is terribly intriguing. Are they British or Chileans ?
Atacama is a desert in northern Chile some 80 km from the biggest source of water (Pacific Ocean), yet it has yet to rain there since the white man came in some almost 500 years ago! Reputed to be the driest place on Earth. Spent about a week in there after spending another week on the Altoplano (plateau at 4000 m above sea level) just looking at the black skies and stars in broad daylight. Awesome place.

Back on SDT,
Wonderful band who made several excellent albums. Their use of violin plus male/female lead vocals gave them a pretty unique sound The first, self titled album made for a great opening statement, especially tracks like "Circus" "Easy to be free" and "The very last blue yodel".
"The machine that cried" was undoubtedly their best album, the opening track "Heartfeeder" being their absolute pinnacle.
"Keep you ‘and on it", with lead vocals by Kim Beacon who sang on Tony Bank’s solo album "A curious feeling" had some excellent tracks too, but I wasn’t impressed much with the more pop based "Please mind you head".
I saw them play live once when they supported Genesis on a Charisma tour around the time of "Foxtrot".
I suspect at the time they were considered to be "progressive", but with the rather narrower retrospective definition these days, no doubt some would argue against their credentials. Apart from occasional tracks such as "Heartfeeder", most of their songs had pretty basic structures, although they were developed well by the band.
By the way, their single "It’s a game" was rather embarrassingly covered by the bay City Rollers.

They needn't bother to be embarassed. The Bay city Rollers covered tracks by other good groups. Presumably SDT are paid royalties.

Since I'm into "String" (I jsut bumped an Incredible String Band thread), I thought I'd see if there are any more thoughts on this fine band.

I only have one album on vinyl, 'The Machine That Cried', but had another (think it was 'Please Mind Your Head' if that's the one with the guy holding the tennis racket??). They definitely belong here on the basis of that album alone imo, as they have the sound of Audience/Curved Air, even a lighter VDGG at times, but I'm not sure that they ever rose above second division status. However, the album certainly has excellent moments- 'Heartfeeder', 'Night Club' and 'Sold Down The River' are my favourites.
