Moderate:
A Moderate prog fan remains open-minded to new progressive rock music that is coming out, but doesn't have too loose a definition of what he/she considers progressive rock. This individual sticks to many of the classics such as Yes, ELP, and Genesis, but isn't afraid to go outside of those boundaries, and openly welcomes the next generation of prog musicians into his/her musical library, such as Marillion, Porcupine Tree, and Echolyn. This individual considers groups like VDGG a little too bizarre, even though he may appreciate the music, and groups such as Rush bordering on not being prog. This individual also embraces non-prog forms of music according to his/her taste, although Prog is undoubted the mainstay. This person may also have unusual obsessions with one particular group.

Liberal:
A Liberal prog fan is more open ended about how he/she views prog and has a looser concept of what he/she considers prog. Although Yes and ELP are in this individual's listening library, groups such as Rush and Supertramp are easily considered prog in this individual's mind. This individual is far more open towards newer groups, pointing out groups such as Tool and Mars Volta as groups who are going to move prog into the future. This individual may go as far as to cite more controversial groups in the prog community such as Primus or Radiohead as newer prog groups. this individual still has prog as his/her musical mainstay, but listens to music based in other genres more so than the moderate.

Ultra-Liberal:
An Ultra-Liberal prog fan probably doesn't have progressive rock records being among his/her favorite to listen to. This individual may consider albums like Yes' Tales and ELP's BSS too dense to listen to, and favors lighter material. Styx (!) is definitely progressive for this individual. This person may be new to prog, or simply an open-minded listener to all genres of music. Most likely this individual is more interested in psychedelia or jazz-rock than progressive rock, and listens to progressive rock as overflow material.

Conservative:
A Covservative prog fan has much more stringent limitations on his/her view of what prog rock is. Yes, ELP, and Genesis are absolutely essential, as are groups like GG, VDGG, and Floyd. This individual is slightly more critical of newer groups than the moderate, but is still keeping his/her ears open for the next prog masterpiece. Groups like Rush who border on being prog in the moderate's view are more than likely not considered prog in the conservative's view. Groups like Primus and Radiohead are without a doubt not prog. This individual obsesses about his/her favorite group more so than the moderate.

Ultra-Conservative:
An Ultra-Covservative prog fan is a finely-tuned individual who knows more about prog than your local mechanic knows about your car. Obscure krautrock and canterbury groups are treasured. Rush and Supertramp are not prog in any way. This individual digs deep into the history of prog, in search of the most useless information pertaining to the genre... this person dreams about finding a mint-condition curved air original first picture disc, and has nightmares about Rick Wakeman dying. This individual obsesses about his/her favorite group by writing letters, sending e-mails, collecting any memorabilia associate with the group/musician, and may even have slept with that particular musician in the past... but thats an extreme scenario.

If you can't decide between liberal and moderate, pick moderate. If you can't decide between ultra-conservative and conservative, pick conservative. That way we'll best the best visualization of how people on the boards view prog rock!

Nice definitions, Sweetnighter - I've placed myself as a moderate (althought I do have conservative leanings)

What if you don't really care about what is considered prog, and just happen to like a fair share of bands that prog fans tend to like?

Marxist communist;

This progger doesn't own any albums, as all property is theft.

 His favourite cd is "Red", Comrade Crimson, favourite band; Pinko Floyd.

Perception is truth, ergo opinion is fact.
