I like him, but I like post-Barrett Pink Floyd more.
Still, I don't know that I've ever heard an artist be as whimsical and sad at the same time. If the goal of music is self-expression, Syd deserves to be among the greats.

I love Syd Barrett...anytime I start reading about his slide , it makes me cry.
He was a true poet and a genius and I agree with James Lee. His solo stuff is actually more interesting.

Love him of course, he is undobtedly the favorite member of my favorite band. It is clearly evident that he is a truly astounding songwriter, even while he is writing through the lens a mentally instable recovering drugaddict.

At the time of his solo projects, he was recovering from a nervous breakdown. Of course he never recovered, I was merely stating that in such a state of mind his brilliance still shined through.

I neither love nor hate him. I think he wrote some great pop songs, but some people vastly overrate him.

For someone whose recording output is limited to 3 and a bit albums ,his influence is amazing.Whether it's because people are drawn to him by the myth or by musical reputation (latter day PF success,) I'm unsure but for me it's his music 1st,the myth 2nd.
I put him in the same league as Nick Drake;enigmatic.
Love him! He makes me smile

Massively influential as a guitarist and songwriter. Fred Frith of Henry Cow wrote an interesting analysis of his guitar technique in NME back in 1974 or so. The Damned wanted him as a producer and got Nick Mason instead. Apparently he now spends his time painting and collecting stamps, and I hope he's found some kind of inner peace.

if you ask me, the most inspirational artist i've come across is jeff buckley, he only left us one PROPER studio album and inspired so many, with so little out there to give. In a way it was a shame he died so young yet it is brilliant to only have grace left behind, and all the lives and demos ofc, cos it makes him seem extra special

I love Syd Barrett. It's hard to consider just the music, though, apart from the story of his life. There's a certain sad feeling that I get when I listen to mad geniuses like Barrett, Nick Drake, Roky Erikson, etc. that really touches me when I'm in the right mood. I do think Piper is one of the greatest albums ever made. But I don't know if I'd appreciate Syd's solo stuff as much if he wasn't such a tragic casualty.
