Inspired by the other thread, maybe some of you would like to rank and tier your favorite artists? I'll start doing that with mine. In order to do so, just find your favorite artist at AP (https://awesomeprog.com/search) and click the "Release Polls" link on the artist page.

NOTE: The AP tier system ranges from S (best) through A, B, C, D, E to F (horrible). More infos here: https://awesomeprog.com/rating-system

I'll start with one of my favorite, but lesser known guitarists:

Bumblefoot:

1. (S) 9.11 (2001) [BC] [SPO]
2. (S) ... Returns! (2025) [BC] [SPO]
3. (A) Hands (2000) [SPO]
4. (A) Abnormal (2008) [BC] [SPO]
5. (B) Little Brother is Watching (2015) [BC] [SPO]
6. (B) Normal (2005) [BC] [SPO]
7. (B) Uncool (2002) [BC] [SPO]

FYI: Today I improved the export a lot - for artist polls the artist name is now extracted as a heading, and I added the release year.

I really love Ayreon. Not sure why Transitus gets such low ratings, just as The Astonishing (Dream Theater) I suspect that many listeners simply expect a different format.

Ayreon:

1. (S) 01011001 (2008) [BC] [SPO]
2. (S) The Source (2017) [BC] [SPO]
3. (S) Into the Electric Castle (1998) [BC] [SPO]
4. (S) The Human Equation (2004) [BC] [SPO]
5. (S) The Theory Of Everything (2013) [BC] [SPO]
6. (A) Transitus (2020) [BC] [SPO]
7. (A) Universal Migrator Part 2: Flight of the Migrator (2000) [BC] [SPO]
8. (A) Universal Migrator Part 1: The Dream Sequencer (2000) [BC] [SPO]
9. (B) Actual Fantasy (1996) [BC] [SPO]
10. (B) The Final Experiment (1995) [BC] [SPO]

I really like the newer Symphony X releases (more so than the average fan), but nothing tops their 2000 release. Would be amazing to hear it remixed and remastered with a less muddy production, but not as loud as their more recent albums, to keep with the distinctly operatic/symphonic style.

Symphony X:

1. (S) V: The New Mythology Suite (2000) [SPO]
2. (S) The Odyssey (2002) [SPO]
3. (S) Underworld (2015) [SPO]
4. (S) Paradise Lost (2007) [SPO]
5. (S) The Divine Wings Of Tragedy (1996) [SPO]
6. (S) Iconoclast (2011) [SPO]
7. (A) Twilight In Olympus (1998) [SPO]
8. (A) The Damnation Game (1995) [SPO]
9. (B) Symphony X (1994) [SPO]

Okay, I'll give this a go without rating the albums. The ranking is not very meaningful. The order could easily be changed, and I actually would be more comfortable doing it chronologically. One to 13 are really strong for me, and the other two I still like, particularly Love of Life, but both of those albums have music I love. I did not include the earlier albums (pre-Children of God) as I have not listened to them so much.

Swans:

1. (?) Soundtracks for the Blind (1996) [BC] [SPO]
2. (?) The Glowing Man (2016) [BC] [SPO]
3. (?) Children of God (1987) [BC] [SPO]
4. (?) To Be Kind (2014) [BC] [SPO]
5. (?) White Light From the Mouth of Infinity (1991) [BC] [SPO]
6. (?) The Great Annihilator (1995) [BC] [SPO]
7. (?) The Seer (2012) [BC] [SPO]
8. (A) The Beggar (2023) [BC] [SPO]
9. (?) Live Rope (Live, 2024)
10. (?) My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky (2010) [BC] [SPO]
11. (?) Deliquescence (Live, 2017)
12. (?) leaving meaning. (2019) [BC] [SPO]
13. (?) Omniscience (Live, 1992) [AP Prog]
14. (?) Love of Life (1992) [BC] [SPO]
15. (?) The Burning World (1989) [SPO]
"Questions are a burden to others; answers a prison for oneself" (The Prisoner, 1967).

Again, the order is fairly meaningless and I have not rated the albums (I find rating unsatisfactory, and rankings I tend not to be keen on either, but I sure do like to present lists... That may be an autism spectrum trait with me, although I have not been diagnosed with it). My favourite often is the one I'm listening to at that time. The top ten especially have all got a lot of plays.

Sufjan Stevens:

1. (?) Illinois (2005) [AP Prog-Adj] [BC] [SPO]
2. (?) The Age of Adz (2010) [AP Prog-Adj] [BC] [SPO]
3. (?) All Delighted People (EP, 2010) [AP Prog] [BC] [SPO]
4. (?) Michigan (2003) [AP Prog-Adj] [BC] [SPO]
5. (?) Seven Swans (2004) [AP Prog-Adj] [BC] [SPO]
6. (?) Carrie & Lowell (2015) [AP Non-Prog] [BC] [SPO]
7. (?) Enjoy Your Rabbit (2001) [AP Non-Prog] [BC] [SPO]
8. (?) Javelin (2023) [AP Prog-Adj] [BC] [SPO]
9. (?) The BQE (Soundtrack, 2009) [AP Non-Prog] [BC] [SPO]
10. (?) A Sun Came (2000) [AP] [BC] [SPO]
11. (?) Carrie & Lowell Live (Live, 2017) [AP Non-Prog] [BC] [SPO]
12. (?) Planetarium (Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner & James McAlister) (2017) [AP Non-Prog] [SPO]
13. (?) The Ascension (2020) [AP Prog] [BC] [SPO]
"Questions are a burden to others; answers a prison for oneself" (The Prisoner, 1967).

If this seems like déjà vu, a month ago I had already posted the exact same ordered list here. It would less redundant if I tried to rate the albums -- one day I likely will try if feeling particularly encouraged or inspired. Ranking already is tough.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor:

1. (?) F♯ A♯ ∞ (1997) [BC] [SPO]
2. (?) Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000) [BC] [SPO]
3. (?) Yanqui U.X.O. (2002) [BC] [SPO]
4. (?) Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada (EP, 1999) [BC] [SPO]
5. (?) G_d's Pee AT STATE'S END! (2021) [BC] [SPO]
6. (?) 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! (2012) [BC] [SPO]
7. (?) "No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead" (2024) [BC] [SPO]
8. (?) 'Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress' (2015) [BC] [SPO]
9. (?) Luciferian Towers (2017) [BC] [SPO]
10. (?) All Lights f**ked on the Hairy Amp Drooling (1994) [AP]
"Questions are a burden to others; answers a prison for oneself" (The Prisoner, 1967).
