Hello,
Try the Cruise to the Edge FB group. That is where the action is. Here's the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/758330887515928, but you might need to be invited there. Cheers.

I went back in 2014. I'm not sure how it's changed since then, but here are my observations...
The headliner acts usually play in the big auditorium, two shows per night, but you can only go to one show based on your badge. Sometimes if there is standing room, they MIGHT let you attend the other show, but don't count on it. All of the other shows are first come, first served, so once you know the schedule (it will be published on the CTTE website, I think) -- sit down and plan your entire trip. Many of the bands will play multiple times, so you will have a couple of shots at seeing them. Many acts overlap, so you may have to leave one venue early to get a good spot for your next selection. There might be 3-5 bands playing at the same time on different parts of the ship. Many acts are in small clubs and don't have much seating (or standing) room, so plan accordingly. I showed up 15 min early for one act and the venue was already packed full, so I missed the show. The ports of call are usually nothing. The bands will still be playing while you're in port, so you have to decide if you'd rather go ashore and miss some acts, or stay on ship. I recommend staying on ship -- you're on this cruise for the music, not tourism. The food was good, but not as good as a regular cruise. The ship had thousands of people trying to squeeze in a bite to eat during lulls in the action. Work your meal plan into your overall schedule of attending concerts. You're there for the music, not fine dining. They may have opportunities to get your photos taken with the bands. You'll stand in line forever, then get about 30 seconds to shake hands, pose, and get your picture taken. It's a nice souvenir if you have the time. My photo with John Wetton (just a couple of years before his death) is one of my prize possessions. Other than hiding in their staterooms, there's no where else for the bands to go when they aren't playing, so you'll see them all across the ship -- in the clubs, dining rooms, pools, etc. Stop and say hi! I lounged around the pool with Tony Levin one afternoon. We joked about my putting a towel across my legs to prevent sunburn, while he did the same with his head! Later I did a photo-op with him and he joked that the towels did their jobs because neither of us were sunburned! Some of the bands will choose to eat their meals in their cabins for privacy and down-time, but many will eat in the cafeteria or dining rooms with everyone else. It's a good opportunity to hob nob and eat with band members. I ate breakfast with members of the Strawbs one morning. I don't know if they still do it, but after hours (usually after midnight), they have amateur hour in one of the clubs. Budding musicians can pull together impromptu (or sometimes rehearsed) performances of their favorite prog songs -- often with the original composers sitting in the audience. I remember John Wetton watching some enterprising prog wannabe's cranking out King Crimson numbers. They were actually quite good. I think the ship supplied a basic complement of instruments, but I know a lot of people brought their own aboard. Besides planning time for meals, my wife and I found it helpful to plan some time to just relax in a quiet spot (the balcony in our stateroom) -- our ears being saturated from 12 hours of non-stop music day after day. So my big message is get the schedule and plan ahead. You don't want to miss your favorite acts. And keep in mind it's not a normal cruise -- it's a floating multi-day music festival. Incidently, on the 2014 cruise we had: Yes, Marillion, Steve Hackett, Genesis revisited, UK, Tangerine Dream, Renaissance, Saga, Three Friends (ex Gentle Giant), Patrick Moraz, PFM, Stick Men, Strawbs, Pineapple Thief, Soft Machine legacy, Electric Asturias, plus many others. They haven't had a better lineup (IMO) since. Edited by wiz_d_kidd - January 23 2025 at 08:38 |

Hi, I'm not so sure that a retro show with these older folks would go as well these days, but the scary thing is not seeing more newer bands involved, and us looking at this as just a showcase for bands we never had a chance to see, and want to catch them before they enter the sunset of their band's life. I can understand the need to attract folks in, but that's like saying that the promoters do not have any faith in the new music and new artists ... and that is bad for the life of the music we love. And fans only buying tickets because SH is there is not a good idea, for example. This was what hurt the 1999 show Sean Ahearn put on ... everyone showed up for the night with PT and Magma, and the rest of the bands were ignored, and it hurt, as some of them were outstanding ... so no one took an interest on Bondage Fruit, Lana Lane and the Rocket Scientists who put on the best show of all the festival, or Brand X (a sad version of it!), Buckethead, Per Lindh with Magdalena before she passed away a few years later. I, honestly, have no ideas or suggestions about the bands though I would like to see some of the things listed on the top in recent PA (and other) polls, for example, though just like the comments by the members on PA, I don't think folks would be interested in showing up ... a really sad statement ... but there are things I would love to see ... Bent Knee would be one ... Maud the Moth would be two ... Mogwai would be three, though I think their time is over and their new album is not as good as before as they went for the "song" and a possible radio approach, a terrible decision in my book! ... Banco del MUtuo Soccorso is still kicking around though not as strong without Francesco who gave the band an "entity" that it lacks now very badly, bad they have some interesting music, though I'm not sure that Vittorio is enough to keep people coming. ... Mostly Autumn would be nice, but I think they are at the sunset of their band life ... Chercan would be a treat I think ... Echolyn would be interesting and they really need the push and hope they can still do it. ... Julia Holter ... GoGo Penguin ... Sleepytime Gorilla Museum ... Mono ... Kairon;Irse ... La Theorie des Cords ... Steve Thelen (a must see!!!) ... Of these, if they were in today's line up, I would have an interest only in Marillion as everyone else is washed out ... and Renaissance has lost one of its most important members, and I'm not sure Annie is up to another show. Stick Men is for bored folks and is not interesting music at all and living off its name, not the music ... which takes a spot away from newer folks that deserve the chance. PFM is dead, and Bernardo has left to go back to his original band, though many folks did not like PFM with him ... and it was not half as bad as folks thought! A cardboard version of YES is not interesting at all! And yet another over rated Steve Hackett show is not something I would spend my money on!

There's a thread about this going on over at PE (progressive ears) so you might want to go over there and read that too.

Can't imagine he's going to read it Mike... don't you just love people who join the forum, open up a thread asking for information, then bugger off, never to be seen again?

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Hi,
I have a couple of friends that are into the progressive music, and have as much if not more than I do in materials ... however one of them says that it is not worth the hassle to post here, as there are too many ... and it is best that he does not post. We've been good friends for 25+ years, and music is the main link for all of it, though he was into DT and some related bands and one day I played DEADWING after my speaker got re-coned here in Portland ... and he came downstairs and asked ... what the heck was that? A few years later I took him to Seattle to see KC and the 3 drummers ... and his comment after? ... that gives a new meaning to what music is! ... My sister, in France, won't post here, and she won't post on JMA either, though she is fairly savvy about jazz and often lists things I had no idea about. She's a painter (several shows all over Europe over the years), and is sensitive to what folks say about the work, so she sticks to what she sees and paints and does not get involved in external stuff ... some artists protect themselves this way ... and sometimes, when reading some stuff here, I wish there was some more respect for many artists and how they work their art ... it is a real trip ... and far out ... but very different! |
