Hello friends of Progarchives. I would like to add a new artist. It's Joan Villalonga, of which I leave you the biography and the information about their last album (they will soon release a new album). He's an artist who moves between diverse genres (art rock, jazz, etc.), with a marked pop influence, but with a very art style.

Artist Name: Joan Villalonga
Subgenre: Crossover Prog
Album: Una Noche en Shinjuku (2019)

Biography:

Born in Castellón de la Plana, at the age of 16 he began to take an interest in music after listening to old tapes of classic Rock & Roll and The Beatles and, with a guitar he found at home, he taught himself to play.

Years later he formed his first group with Paco Ibáñez, 27B, which later became Four on Six, one of the first bands of the 90s to play rock and blues sung in Valencian. He soon began to have a passion for composing and the group incorporated these compositions into their live performances until 1997 when they recorded their first album, Els temps passats, where the lyrics coexist in Spanish, English and Valencian with the latter predominating. With this album they were finalists in the Ahora si group competitions organised by the UJI and Castellón en vivo.

In 1997 he began his piano studies at Taller 3 in Castellón with Ricardo Belda and expanded his musical knowledge with the help of teachers such as Diego Clanchet and Fernando Marco.

In 2003, Camina was released, the second album by Four on Six with which they won the award for the best song in Valencian with the song "El blues de l'hombre gris". With more than 200 performances, the group stopped performing regularly in 2014.

At the beginning of the new century, he also began a series of solo performances that took him to venues in Valencia and Catalonia and released an EP: "Ells i nosaltres", with the help of musicians such as Natxo Navarro, Diego Clanchet, Simon Taylor, Diego Barberá, Tico Porcar and Four on Six colleagues Hector Mas and Paco Ibáñez. During this period he won the award for the best song in Valencian for two consecutive years, second prize in the La Duda singer-songwriter competition and was a finalist in the Castellón en vivo competition.

In 2010, to shape his new compositions, he contacted Diego Barberà and Tico Porcar to form a band with the format of drums, bass, piano and vocals and TanstuPids was born. With them he released two albums with the record label Flor y Nata Records: "TanStuPids" (2011) and "Plou" (2014), for which they were nominated for best pop album of the year by the Ovidi Montllor Collective, and they performed a series of concerts in venues, auditoriums and festivals in Valencia and Catalonia, as well as two performances at the legendary The Cavern in Liverpool within the International IPO Festival.

During 2016 he went into the studio with some of the best musicians in Castellón and recorded his first official solo EP which was released in early 2017 under the name Un día en Aberdeen.

In 2018 she returned to the studio to record her first album, Una noche en Shinjuku, which was released this April and has been carefully released on vinyl.

I'm not convinced at all by the 'Una noche en Shinjuku' album. It sounds mostly like a blend of folk and dream pop to my ears, and I'm having difficulty finding anything of note in it to suggest that it really belongs on PA.

However, the four tracks from the new album that have been released on YouTube as singles definitely sound more promising, so I suggest that we wait until the new album is released, and we can listen to it in full, before we send this suggestion to the team.

I understand what you're saying! Because of the new album, it will probably fit better in Progarchives (it does seem like a Peter Gabriel/Franco Battiato influence in some things, with all due respect).

Unfortunately the Crossover Team don't think this music falls within the scope of PA, and with two 'no' votes already cast, Joan Villalonga has been rejected. My own thoughts are that "Un instante en la vida" is a very enjoyable album to listen to indeed, with lots of melody, and extremely well put together instrumentally, but I don't think any of it could really be classed as prog.

It's an excellent album of its type for sure though, and it should sell really well. I think Astronomy Recording Music called it pretty accurately when they wrote: Genres: Singer-Songwriter / Art Pop / Art Rock on their Bandcamp page for the album.

I think it's closer to being prog than the first album was if that's any consolation, so maybe the next one will continue even further in the same direction.
