Hi!

Some of you have already been using AP for a while to compile your favorite releases lists. Here's a nice overview page of all the polls which I have implemented so far, new polls will also be added to this page.

In order to participate, you need to register at AP (recommended) or copy/paste your lists into this thread. More instructions are on the voting page.

There's currently three time-based types of polls:
1. Monthly polls for the last 10 months (including the current month), points for the top 10 entries
2. Yearly polls from 1940 until the current year, points for the top 20 entries
3. Decade polls from the 1940s until the current decade, points for the top 50 entries

On the page I linked to above you can see all the polls and how many users have already posted lists. More details will follow ...

Let me know if you have ideas for other types of polls - for example, I'll probably add country based polls soon.

I've just implemented a preview of all the ongoing polls on that page ... looks quite nice, lots of votes already. Many of you have mentioned your favorite releases in the yearly poll threads created by Greg, but all that information will eventually be lost in the forum archives - why not save it in a more permanent form? Smile

Looks great. You might have something similar already, but I'd like to see one where we do our top track per album release for a sort of song of the year event. And then because I do see value in duplication, share the results in this forum too. I'm very keen on that idea partially as I have liked to make playlists and lists with one track per album. It doesn't mean that I don't care about listening to full albums, I do, but I see value in evaluating for and sharing a favourite track too. That exercise really made albums all the more special to me. Sometimes just choosing one is super hard... Or it could be not having to choose just one per album, but also that 20 points and down system.

For instance, my top ten albums of 2024 were

1. Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown [AP Prog-Adj]
2. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead"
3. The Smile - Wall of Eyes
4. Tapir! - The Pilgrim, Their God and the King of My Decrepit Mountain [AP Prog]
5. Julia Holter - Something in the Room She Moves [AP Non-Prog]
6. 김반월키 - 빈자리 (Binjari) [AP Prog]
7. St. Vincent - All Born Screaming [AP Prog]
8. The Smile - Cutouts
9. samlrc - A Lonely Sinner [AP Prog]
10. Tigran Hamasyan - The Bird Of A Thousand Voices

May top ten track list could be (in this case just using those albums and following that order).

1. "Floating on a Moment" off Beth Gibbons' Lives Outgrown
2. "Babys in a Thundercloud" off Godspeed You! Black Emperor's "No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead"
3. "Bending Hectic" of The Smile's Wall of Eyes
4. "Mountain Song" off Tapir!'s The Pilgrim [...]
5. "Something in the Room She Moves" off Julia Holter's Something in the Room She Moves et cetera.

I actually would find it really hard to rank my favourite tracks commonly.

To me the lists work best when combined with forum topics (be they here or at your forum or both) because I like it when people actively share and compare their lists/favourites. Without a social component, commenting on each others choices to some extent, they matter less to me. And I hope more come up with topics where we share, compare and discuss each others choices.

^ I have built a "tracks of the year" chart, available here:

This is currently based on track ratings, so in order to participate you a) need an AP account and b) you'll need to rate your favorite tracks. What I'll typically do is that I'll rate my favorite tracks of my favorite releases. Rating all the tracks you're listening to is tedious and will burn you out eventually.

I'll probably provide easier access to the track rating UI right from the poll voting list.

What do you think? Should I rather try to introduce track polls where you do the same for tracks that you can do for releases now? I think that for tracks the rating-based approach is easier, and most of us operate primarily on the release level.

^ I'm sick as a skunk, find it hard to think, and trying to navigate that and learn the charts now. I would like to easily be able to see the top rated track (with one per album) per year of release. So far I just see the 2025 ones, and to be able to view by user... I would like that for releases much like we have for the polls, but I think I may be too much a minority for wanting that (maybe minority of one).

^ I was thinking about introducing "track polls", but it would be a lot of code to refactor and as you say, I suspect that (even) fewer users would want to go through all of the tracks in addition to going through the releases. So I thought of a "middle ground" where once you have selected your favorite releases, and within each release marked your favorite tracks, we can compile track charts from that.

In order to make this easier, I will:
1. Add a year chooser to the tracks chart page, obviously
2. Make rating the tracks more accessible from the release voting list
3. Begin displaying favorite tracks in the release polls lists (user and combined)

^ You can now select arbitrary years on the tracks chart by tweaking the url:

I'm not happy with the template yet, might improve it a bit over the weekend. Also the track ratings are not being shown for anything prior to 2023, I've introduced new database columns which the system is populating in the background.

I've noticed that some releases in the AP database have the wrong year. Based on a comparison between PA, AP and RYM this is currently the case for about 1500 releases (that's about 2%, or in other words: 98% are entered correctly), and it is usually only a one year difference, but sometimes more significant (e.g. date of recording vs. date of release, or re-release).

I'm starting to correct this, but unfortunately it means that those of you who had these releases in your list will have to add them again in the new year.

It also means that some of you added duplicates to the database when you did not find a release because it was in a different year, as was the case for:

Guapo - Five Suns
GodspeedYBE - F♯ A♯ ∞

I'll try to keep a log of the changes for the higher profile releases so you can update your lists accordingly. Today I've adjusted Yes - Fragile and Tales From Topographic Oceans ...

I should have contacted you with some entries.

t would be good if we could edit things like the years, kinds of release etc. in the entries. I don't see how to if a user like me can but I would have expected various members to have those privileges.

^ I want to limit editing as much as possible, because usually there's not much need for it in the database. I've granted you editing permissions, should be active once you log out and in again. Smile

Mike, can you make correct my status to that of Collaborator (not 'Forum user') please? It's not a biggie but it has been bugging me for a while. Ta. Smile

Apparently we have the same issue for Oiapok - Oisolün. It's wrong in the PA database, should be moved from 2023 to 2022 (according to RYM and Musicbrainz it was released Dec 22, 2022).
