Here is a poll with three sets of eight options, plus an "other" option if you don't choose to vote for one that has been listed. The first section of eight is what is listed at the PA Top albums chart if only filtered by the year 2022 (the default listing for 2022). The second comes from the top ten Collab Album of the Year event for 2022. Two of the actual top 8 albums were removed from that list because they had been covered in the first list. The third is from my list at Awesome Prog for 2022 (have not added many there) when just doing studio albums. black midi is one of my favourites, but I did not add it to my section because it already was included in the Collab AOTY list (and is the "winner" there). I have added the categories at PA to the listing below, and with my list half are not in PA and I have labelled those albums as RateYourMusic primarily does as well as mentioning that they are not in PA.

PA Top Albums of 2022 Chart (CLICK)

1. Myth of Logic - Surrounded by Ghosts (Neo-Prog, US)
2. Dave Brons - Return to Arda (Crossver Prog, England)
3. iNFiNiEN - Beyond the Veil (Eclectic Prog, US)
4. Toehider - I Have Little to No Memory of these Memories (Progressive Metal, Australia)
5. Elder - Innate Passage (Heavy Prog, US)
6. Birth - Born (Psychedelic/Space Rock, US)
7. David Maxim Micic - Bilo 4.0 (Progressive Metal, Croatia, Serbia)
8. Arena - The Theory of Molecular Inheritance (Neo-Prog, England)

Collaborators Top Albums of 2022 (CLICK)

1. black midi - Hellfire (RIO/Avant Prog, England)
2. Motorpsycho - Ancient Astronauts (Eclectic Prog, Norway)
iNFiNiEN - Beyond the Veil: actual third removed here to avoid duplication
3. Porcupine Tree - Closer/Continuation (Heavy Prog, England)
4. Big Big Train - Welcome to the Planet (Crossover Prog, England)
5. Marillion - An Hour Before It's Dark (Neo-Prog, England)
Elder - Innate Passage: actual seventh removed to avoid duplication
6. Greco Bastian - With A Little Hell From My Friends (RIO/Avant Prog, Mexico)
7. 5uu’s - The Quiet In Your Bones (RIO/Avant Prog, US)
8. Miriodor - Elements (RIO/Avant Prog, Canada)

Eight Albums I Like Not Listed Above, Prog or Not:

1. Weyes Blood - And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow (Baroque Pop, Singer-Songwriter, non PA, US)
2. Beach House - Once Twice Melody (Dream Pop, Neo-Psychedelia, non PA, US)
black midi - Hellfire: not in my list to avoid duplication
3. The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention (Crossover Prog, England)
4. Natalia Lafourcade - De todas las flores (Singer-Songwriter, Chamber Folk, Vocal Jazz, non PA, Mexico)
5. Richard Dawson - The Ruby Cord (Prog Folk, England)
6. Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There (RIO/Avant Prog, England)
7. Kikagaku Moyo - Kumoyo Island (Psychedelic/Space Rock, Japan)
8. Perfume Genius - Ugly Season (Art Pop, Experimental, US)

Please mention as many as you like. Feel free to vote with limited familiarity. Please consider voting for one in the poll even if it is not your absolute favourite and then mention that and your actual favourite or favourites in a post. No multiple choice again. Thanks.

I didn't remember some things anymore, particularly that Porcupine Tree grabbed a very good 4th place in our Album of the Year (I had thought the reaction to this album was rather lukewarm)... and Ancient Astronauts ended up second, which I really should have remembered as I love this album. And so I vote for it. Narrowly behind are iNFiNiEN and Black Country, New Road. I had somehow missed the first Smile album, need to check it out.

I really like that The Smile album. It was my top album for the AOTY.

I think you have heard this at least. My choice for an Interactive Poll as I recall.

When I came across it at first I thought it was a Thom Yorke sound-alike and they were really showing their Radiohead influence on their sleeves. lol

Definitely interested to hear about those that are not on the list as well. :)

I went with BIRTH's debut, a band born from the ashes of ASTRA. Greco Bastian is my runnerup.
I want to mention ARKITEKTURE, ONE SHOT and JORDSJO as releasing some of my favourites from 2022.

I don't know if I made list for 2022, so I went on AwesomeProg to make one.

I made a list for 20 and realized I didn't have a lot for 2022. 10 of the 20 are on one of the three lists Greg showed. Compared to 2023 and 2024, I don't have as many listed. 2023 was stellar and 2024 turned out to have a better second half than first. I just didn't to as much 2022 releases it seems, but when I go through the various lists, including the Awesome Prog generated recommendations, I don't find much that I feel like I missed out on.

Almost half are instrumental or near instrumental albums.

Greg, if you are not already familiar, Ghost Power might be of some interest to you. Half of Ghost Power is Tim Gane of Stereolab, and the other half is Jeremy Novak of Dymaxion. A full instrumental album of neo-psych, prog electronic music. Tracks ranging from 2 to 5 minutes and then ending with the 15-minute Astral Melancholy Suite.

^ Nice, George. And pleased to see that we share two in our top ten: Kikagaky Moyo and Black Country, New Road (a rare band that I introduced my eldest to and is now very interested in). Speaking of family, my wife's brother just died, no comments please, but just wish her family well.

I agree! I saw them twice at ProgDay and they were amazing. One of the few bands in the list that is bringing a new vibe to the genre.

Voted Arena, probably one of my favorite prog albums from 2022. Followed closely by Marillion and Porcupine Tree. Have heard but was not particularly fond of the black midi and BCNR albums, have to revisit those. Everything else is mostly unfamiliar territory for me. Smile

We have significantly different tastes but I was not keen on black midi at first (and used to prefer Cavalcade to Hellfire) but over time I grew to really like the band as certain aspects of songs resonated with me more and more over time. The singer of Black Country, New Road has been an issue for me, although I liked the music (sans his tone) immediately.

My tastes are not what one likely would expect of most people at a Prog site. Although I love lots of rock music, and I like some very heavy stuff, I often gravitate to the lighter more pop and folk music. I do like contrast. My tastes have become more Indie and Art Pop/Art Rock over the last years, but I also appreciate noise and sonic onslaughts. Melodic/Neo/Symphonic Prog tends not to be where my interests lie.

This is a playlist of a favoured track (well, all of Tissues) from each album I listed from my Awesome Prog list (only a partially "Prog" list), That YAYA Kim should not rank as high because I enjoy some parts of it much more than others (she is sexy however, which is not an expectation of most Proggers I know. Move over Steve Howe, here's Yaya).

I should listen to iNFiNiEN again. I recognised the quality and I even quite like it, but I guess there is certain heavyness to it that did not appeal (love most Swans and that can be super heavy), and it's almost "too prog" for me. Gimme the non-Prog of Weyes Blood and Beach House.
