A-Z of Japanese Symphonic Prog & Neo Prog
THETA Violins and Shaolins.... Theta is the eighth letter of the Greek alphabet and the first letter in Japanese Symphonic Prog. Theta sound unmistakably Japanese, but they're known mainly for having classical allusions to Illusion and Renaissance with a heart-warming album that's as joyous as a Kamikaze pilot returning safely from a mission. 2000: Theta - Seeds of the Dream - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nmnvhwmfxJrD1VflU30AnzrMSK8MZaC4U

VERMILION SANDS Shining like a glowing red beacon, it's destination outward bound now for Vermilion Sands, a band for fans of Renaissance who are drawn towards the Northern Lights but can't afford the airfare to the Arctic Circle. 1989: Vermilion Sands - Water Blue - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCOLo3qiFvY 2013: Vermilion Sands - Spirits of the Sun - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k2h5Qh4RkgPLrwtQ8_NwH720dPjXAzA0A Edited by Psychedelic Paul - 8 hours 14 minutes ago at 07:50 |

More of a J-Fusion band, but I have to give a shout-out to DEZOLVE, especially for their last few albums, which blended a lot of different styles together. Here is a theme that's part a rondo, part a chanson infused with jazz theory techniques: www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9gWRDaaFNM A mysterious theme emulating some middle eastern and Indian motifs, with some ethnic chanting on top: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uSRAGr-rh0 A louder more psychedelic theme, kind of in spirit of those prog metal bands when they do jazzier music: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oqxK4khPbE Definitely a band that deserves more attention.

WATER GARDEN Making a big splash now with a banzai-charge through the oriental world of Symphonic Prog without even getting wet, Water Garden were the well-deserved winners of the Biwako Beat Wave contest - the Japanese equivalent of the X-Factor - only without the highly irritating Geordie twosome, Ant & Dec. 2014: Water Garden - Himiko: Prayer in the Land of the Rising Sun - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mqfuHqWxSpVgSkorCMRArvLfuMzbccINc ENDURANCE: the ultimate Japanese game show challenge, which would cause a panic attack amongst the British Health & Safety Executive. Thanks. I'll be featuring Japanese Jazz-Rock/Fusion here soon, after checking out Yuka & Chronoship - the last of the Symphonic & Neo Prog acts.

Hi, Paul, you might like to know that the JMA listing of Japanese music is very strong and far out ... there are some really neat things in there ... and some are really neat. The only thing that is sad, at times, is the "same thing" over and over again, but in general, I have enjoyed the JMA listings on Japan a lot ... wait until you see the 16 saxophones ... it is far out ... and really makes prog and a lot of stuff look rather puny!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
