From this list I voted for Poil Ueda. The first place in my AOTY list was Fire! Orchestra's Echoes, although I admit I couldn't remember which album it was. I thought of Moura but it's my #1 in 2022.

Thanks. No worries Greg, I had to look it up to be sure. One Shot's now dual keyboard lineup with MacGaw sadly gone is very impressive. "No worries" is one of my very favourite expressions, and that's not just the Aussie in me speaking. Also fond of saying no problem, "de nada" (Spanish) and daijōbu (Japanese). It's a wonderful sentiment anyway you look at it. I mention especially because I recalled a conversation where the question "What is your favourite two word phrase, or one of them, in the English language?" came up. One person said "Thank you", then the next said "You're welcome", and I replied with "No worries". I don't have an exciting life so don't expect entertaining or interesting anecdotes -- lol. At least when it comes to the more trivial, less consequential things, it's mostly only when I've doubled-down on a mistake then realised the error that I have felt ashamed. I mistook Univers Zero for Present at first when responding to your post, but then caught my error and edited my post accordingly. :) I can be very careless. Today I made a dog's breakfast of my son's breakfast, but sadly, we have no dog to appreciate it. Very sad about MacGaw. And was so talented. Gonna play some of the more contemporary One Shot today. I had an uncle who at 24 years of age left Australia in a ship for California. He just divorced his wife and wanted out I guess? Moved from California to BC before heading east to Toronto where he met my aunt both working for Sears downtown Toronto. It was so cool as a kid having this Australian in our family. He was awesome. Eventually in my early twenties I would work with him for about the next 20 years. It was an appliance store and he'd bring his six pack of beer every day. But the stories! Especially the spiders and on and on.

Love to hear the stories! When I went to Australia for the first time, I was being fed a story about being careful of the drop-bears that would drop out of the trees and onto you. Not saying I believed it, but I imagined it being a little like a cross between a Kola and an alien facehugger. Only a little less cute -- lol.. They sure do have some dangerous critters in Australia.

Australians, that I know, sure do like their beer (and to drink generally, my tummy can't take it except in extreme moderation). When my brother who moved to Australia in the early 80s comes to visit it's all about hanging out in pubs. Mind you, that's the social aspect as much as the beer. They love to tell each other their stories, often in pubs and are very comfortable socialising with strangers, which I find really nice. Coming back to Canada was a culture shock. The people here, Vancouver, I found stand-offish and territorial in comparison. Mind, you, I tended to hang out with backpackers there and it's not really a fair comparison. Next year I will take a trip to Australia, Perth. And go to New Zealand -- now there's a place lovely for its lack of native dangerous critters.

I went through the list and wondered whether based on my listening in the last year I'd make any changes at the top, but I don't think so, so Sprain it is (I don't like to vote for "other" categories). Swans, Jordsjo, Sonar, Poil Ueda, Squid, Sufjan Stevens, Zopp lost out narrowly. There's not much between all of these.

I enjoyed that Aksak Maboul album too. It's one that I should play again as it has not received enough deserved spins. Sprain's was for me a really good find.
