Hi, Time for something else ... it should help a few folks get the right idea about a lot of music!!! It's a bit much, but actually very with it, and some folks might not like it. But it is, for the most part (in my book) very correct and right, though, more often than not, we dislike folks that speak out as much as Bob does ... but I think he is quite right. Bob is not one of those that is sucked in by lists, numbers and Tarzan's!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Ian Anderson is great on flute and some of his sound on Aqualung [my favorite album by them] is great, especially on the starrer My God. [sorry, if I confused a song's name]. That being said, I never could like early or late Tull. They seemed uneven to me. Stuff like Bouree is decent but there is much fluff in there as well. Personally, I think they have two top tier albums out of which I personally only would rate Aqualung as an all time classic. Still, as the poster said, everyone has their opinion on music. There is little objectively right or wrong [unless you are talking about Rolling Stones' Bridges to Babylon. That has to be the single most worst thing I have listened in my early rock phase :p] and I can't criticize Tull or most bands on a musical level, even if I don't like them.

I went over there once and was pleased to see an ongoing conversation with Steve Babb about the last Glass Hammer album. That was cool. However I feel very invested in PA and also prog yt channels generally name check PA not PE because of the expansive database.

I can understand why you might think this and there are some people on there who seem to be like that but I don't think it's as bad as it used to be. The really snobby people either got bored or were kicked out or whatever. I think a lot of them tend to like more than just symph prog or prog metal and many are big fans of RIO and avant garde. Most of the prog places I see online seem to be mostly younger fans who seem to be really into prog metal and not much else or maybe just newer prog and aside from the most well known 70s bands (or well known in general) don't know much about the lesser known (old and newer) bands. At least that's been my experience. Go on any of the prog reddit pages and you'll see what I mean. They might occasionally mention Eloy, Triumvirat, PFM, Ange or Nektar but probably not much more obscure than those.

Thanks. I'm just curious. I may or may not know who this person is depending on how long he has been involved with the festival. I forgot to mention this but my username on PE is Digital Man. That a long with my AFTK avatar makes me seem like a Rush fanatic which I suppose is true but I like a lot of stuff beyond just them. Edited by AFlowerKingCrimson - January 30 2025 at 15:04 |

On P.E. there are members who are more likely to talk about Jade Warrior, Ange, Pulsar and other European underground bands. At least it seems that way. This is of interest because you've got PE members who will offer up information about these bands that you sometimes won't find on the internet.
Unfortunately there are a lot of snooty people on P.E. who think of music as a competitive sport. I don't think of music in that way and I try to avoid members of the site that do. Some of the opinions on P.E. I have difficulties in accepting. If you dislike Jethro Tull that is your right....but to say that Ian Anderson is not great on flute is just silly. Of course he's not the greatest..but he could improvise like Herbie Mann or Mel Collins if he wanted to. He just has no desire to. It's the musicians in Kiss and Grand Funk Railroad who are not great on their instruments . So on P.E. you'll have 2 or 3 members stating that Ian Anderson is not very good and then the next post down you'll have members talking about how great Grand Funk Railroad are on their instruments...and it's such a turn off Alan Holdsworth is often tossed around in conversation like the greatest guitarist on earth. He's often held above other phenomenal players and it's not accurate to say so logically. I sometimes see more of a sharing process on Prog Archives where people actually agree on viewpoints other than their own. There are also P.E. members which hail from Cumberland County, New Jersey and that particular area has no culture and regarding music it has a back in the woods mentality..which is very backwards, macho...and moronic to me. And that exists on P.E. which doesn't seem to surface too much on Progarchives. Edited by Jacob Schoolcraft - January 30 2025 at 10:54 |

I don't recall. I have his business card at the house, though...I'll see if I can find it.

Oh yeah. I don't care for some of the behavior of the fans (especially if they win) but I think it's a good way to bring people together overall. I won't say they have it in the bag but it should be a very interesting game. As an aside I have a nephew who goes to USC and plays ultimate frisbee down there on their team. Although I've been to N.C. a few times (for Progday) I've only been to S.C. once.

Do you remember his name? I was on the promotions team years ago. Michael Bennet is the main guy who runs it now and I think he lives locally but he's more than just a promoter. Edited by AFlowerKingCrimson - January 30 2025 at 08:28 |

I have an account on that site though I have made few posts only. The only sour experience I have had was on RYM [Rate your Music] where a mod was decidedly unhappy about one of my music album additions to the site and decided to retrospectively look into/cancel [dunno if he ever removed all of my submissions] all of my past ones. Either case, Progressive Ears has a better search system, IMO than PA. It's hard to fine old threads/posts here and the search bar sometimes only returns uncertain results for me here.

I've always wanted to go, but it falls near family birthdays. Never make it. I sat next to one of the promoters at the Steve Hackett show last year...cool guy.

Yep. It's a lot of fun. I went many years ago and was involved for a few years. It's about an 8 hour drive for me which I usually split up in two days. One of these days I hope to return.

On the eastern side down 40. He and his girl both work downtown. I saw the BEAT show advertised, but I wasn't able to make it.

I have not and it is only over in Chapel Hill. Maybe a twenty minute drive. I looked at the last year's activities and it looks pretty cool. We will have to pop on over there this year if we have nothing else in the docket
