This album, while often overlooked by the majority of Dream Theater aficionados, deserves a more discerning ear. Dominic's vocal delivery aligns beautifully with the music, and Myung's bass work on this record is particularly commendable. Petrucci's guitar tone on this album is distinctively different from their subsequent works, adding a unique flavour to the overall sound. I always loved Kevin Moore's keys! Atmospheric intros, instrumental excellence, and emotional depth adorn this masterpiece. When Dream and Day Unite had a crucial impact on the evolution of progressive metal. There are not better examples of progressive metal from the late eighties than songs such as Afterlife, The Killing Hand, Status Seeker, and Only a Matter of Time. |

I have a buddy that will die on the hill of this being DT's best album ever.
![]() I don't think it's a bad album by any stretch. I think it's quite good, actually. But in my personal DT favorites list, it's next to last.

It´s a decent release. But they´ve made much better since.(function(){function c(){var b=a.contentDocument||a.contentWindow.document;if(b){var d=b.createElement('script');d.innerHTML="window.__CF$cv$params={r:'9089e826d9001d1e',t:'MTczNzk5MzExNC4wMDAwMDA='};var a=document.createElement('script');a.nonce='';a.src='/cdn-cgi/challenge-platform/scripts/jsd/main.js';document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(a);";b.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(d)}}if(document.body){var a=document.createElement('iframe');a.height=1;a.width=1;a.style.position='absolute';a.style.top=0;a.style.left=0;a.style.border='none';a.style.visibility='hidden';document.body.appendChild(a);if('loading'!==document.readyState)c();else if(window.addEventListener)document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',c);else{var e=document.onreadystatechange||function(){};document.onreadystatechange=function(b){e(b);'loading'!==document.readyState&&(document.onreadystatechange=e,c())}}}})();< height="1" width="1" style=": ; top: 0px; left: 0px; border: medium; visibility: ;">

Really? I think it's way up there. But I prefer early DT. |

I guess, to clarify, I tap out on DT after FII. LOL 1. Awake 2. I&W 3. ACoS 4. WDADU 5. FII All 5 are great, IMO...but if I had to rank them...

Okay, I misread you. It's next-to-last in your list of favorites. (Those are the only DT albums I bother with, too.) I've no idea why I was imagining it was ntl in the canon of DT's fifteen (sixteen, if you count the latest) albums. ![]() ![]() |

I was trying to be diplomatic. ![]() Listen, his skill is off the charts. He's a master. I just can't connect with what he does.

Rudess is classically trained. He has perfect pitch. I think it's not fair to judge him in a purely Rock context. And I wonder if those who are quick to insult him here would insult purely classical artists (say, concert pianists) with the same level of aggression.

I am not insulting him in the least. He's supremely skilled. His playing is impressive. It just does not connect with me in terms that I enjoy. I can be impressed with something and not find long-term enjoyment in it. Kinda like watching gymnastics. |

Jordan is a monster musician. Nobody is saying otherwise. In fact, I first heard him many years before he joined DT. Jordan performs on a quasi DT-like album by Vinnie Moore, called Time Odyssey, which came out in 1988. It's a great slice of early instrumental prog-metal. But the band's albums after a point just don't work for me. And, hey, I'll watch, I mean listen, to Yuja Wang anytime. ![]() |
