A very clear top two (had to vote for Miles:

Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
Pharaoh Sanders - Karma

3 to 5:

Alice Coltrane - Huntingdon Ashram Monastery
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
The Fourth Way - The Sun and Moon Have Come Together

Great year for jazz of all kinds. Here's ten more albums I love about as much as my two on top:

McCoy Tyner - Time for Tyner
Duke Pearson - The Phantom
Nathan Davis Quartet - Rules of Freedom
Amancio D'Silva - Integration
Horace Tapscott Quintet - The Giant Is Awakened
John Tchicai & Cadentia Nova Danica - Afrodisiaca
Prince Lasha & Sonny Simmons - Firebirds
Herbie Mann - Concerto Grosso in D Blues
Jerzy Milian - Baazaar
The Dave Pike Set - Noisy Silence - Gentle Noise

Zappa's Hot Rats. Not familiar with many of these, but I think I'd pick Chicago second. Four solid lights and some spinach baubles.

If I'd somehow neglected to include Santana in the poll, that'd be an Open Invitation for you to shout "Oye Como Va? Why aren't Santana in the poll?" Tongue

If someone were to ask me what my very favorite jazz album of all-time was, I would unhesitatingly reply, "Miles Davis's In a Silent Way". In the same way that Abbey Road (also from 1969) foreshadowed everything that was to follow in pop/rock, In a Silent Way does exactly the same for jazz/fusion.

While I wouldn't count Santanas debut as Jazz Fusion, I think Caravanserai and a few more of his later albums of his "qualifies" as such. I'd say the Alice Coltrane (included is a 1970-release btw) and Pharoah Sanders albums included here, are even less associated with anything Jazz Fusion. Atlantis by Sun Ra is pretty much improvised Free Jazz, and not much to write home about. Fusion or not, I just think of which albums I enjoy here - or not.
