A-Z of Japanese Symphonic Prog & Neo Prog

MAGDALENA      Glorious classically-inspired Symphonic Prog with operatic soprano Megumi Tokuhisa (Japan's answer to Kate Bush) raising the rafters. All of the lyrics are in Japanese, but that only adds to  Magdalena's oriental charm. Domo arigato. Smile

MAHOUJIN     You may not know the meaning of Mahoujin, but if they were an English band they'd be called Magical Circle Guru Guru - an ideal name for an ELP-style prog band, I think you'll agree. Smile

MANDRAKE     Mandrake's roots are located firmly in the 1970's, but their two volumes of raw archive material weren't released until 20 years later in 1997, by which time it appeared Symphonic Prog had had its day, especially if you happened to be a fan of Genesis. On the other hand though, if you were a fan of YES in the mid-90's, their best years were still to come. Wink

A low-key classic. If Megumi Tokuhisa is Japan's Kate Bush, their answer to Ann Wilson (with shades of Haslam) is Hiroko Nagai of Pageant (one of my favorite Japanese groups).

I've had a quick preview of Pageant and they sound great, so I'm looking forward to hearing them in full sometime soon. Thumbs Up

Please experience La Mosaique de la Reverie sans interruptions from the townsfolk: Fill the moat, bar the doors, shutter the windows!

I live in a quiet village, so there's no danger of being interrupted by noisy townsfolk around here. Tongue

With a name like Magical Circle Guru Guru, I would think of some psychedelic and folky Krautrock Indo-Prog/Raga Rock band.

The jazzy German Krautrock outfit did come to mind when I saw the name Guru Guru. Smile

A-Z of Japanese Symphonic Prog & Neo Prog

MIDAS      It takes some degree of audacity to title a recording "International Popular Album" before anyone's even heard it, but this is a Symphonic Prog band with the Midas touch! Smile

NEGASPHERE      One of the most obscure Neo Prog bands in the far eastern hemisphere, which could be a major Disadvantage in gaining any recognition in the western hemisphere. Confused

A-Z of Japanese Symphonic Prog & Neo Prog

NOVELA      Not a Renaissance tribute band, despite the name, and despite all four members later going on to form the band Scheherazade. There has to be a Renaissance connection there somewhere. Tongue

ORPHEUS     A Japanese Neo Prog band who are so obscure that they're listed as the 27th artist named Orpheus on Discogs, so good luck with finding their album in the shops. Tongue
