These are some preferred albums taken from PA's categories from the 1980s. It's not about whether the album is suitable to the category, but where it is included in PA. PA has an "all albums by an act are found under one category" limitation.

Some things never change. First attempt to reply vanished into the ether behind a access denied error. Fortunately a partial copy was in the clipboard, so I'll fill the remainder and try again.
These are today's picks. Probably a little different tomorrow. Many of these subs have very broad scopes. RIO is like ordering Indian food, there are very distinct spice levels to be aware of. For Electronic, the album I chose is my favorite in the sub, but arguably not an electronic album. I dislike 99.9% of Neo-Prog. Fortunately, the album I chose is decidedly not Neo-Prog. - Canterbury Scene: Supersister - Present From Nancy (1970) - Crossover Prog: Moody Blues - Days of Future Past (1967) - Eclectic Prog: Squintaloo - Über Bord!(2017) - Experimental/Post Metal: Virus - Carheart (2003) - Heavy Prog: Laundry - Blacktongue (1994) - Indo-Prog/Raga Rock: The only one I and probably 90% of everyone else actually ever heard. - Jazz Rock/Fusion: Panzerballett - Star Stücke (2008) - Krautrock: Amon DüülII - Yeti (1970) - Neo-Prog: Rivendell - Sisyfos (2018) - Post-Rock/Math Rock: The Physics House Band - The Incident At 3rd (2021) - Prog Folk: Jethro Tull - A Passion Play (1973) - Progressive Electronic: Heldon - Stand By(1979) - Progressive Metal: Pain ofSalvation - Be [Live] (2009) - Psychedelic/Space Rock: Slift - Ilion (2024) - RIO/Avant-Prog: Nebelnest - Nova Express (2002) - Rock Progressivo Italiano: Alphataurus - Alphataurus (1973) - Symphonic Prog: Yes - Yessongs (1973) - Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: Exivious - Exivious (2009) - Zeuhl: Magma - Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré (2009) - Prog Related: Black Sabbath - Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath (1973) - Proto-Prog: The Who - Tommy (1973) |

I kind of understand this comment if Neo Prog was just IQ, Arena or Marillion but what about Frost*, Galahad or even the recent album by Norwegian band Infringement that moves away from what I commonly think of as Neo Prog (ie prog with a defined musical structure that is heavily influenced by Genesis)?

^I've heard Frost and Galahad which didn't grab me. Not familiar with the other. When it gets right down to it, I've ended up with a ton of music in my collection that I like and have had little time to revisit during the time I was evaluating for the site. So new stuff has really taken a back seat to reacquaint myself with my existing collection. I've listened/purchased maybe 10 new albums this year, only one artist I was not already aware of. There are certainly other Neo selections out there that would check all the boxes, but I'm at the saturation stage.

^ okay that's fine, wasn't trying to be critical but I wondered how broad your experience of 'Neo Prog' was. Personally I believe this sub genre on PA should be limited to 80's bands only. That was when the term was in common usage. It became redundant very quickly. Now we have artists in this sub genre that have little to do with it at all. For instance I've no idea why Infringement would even be in there. This is just excellent progressive rock music from Norway and that's all. If I had my way I would now close the 'Neo' sub set in terms of adding any new bands as it's seems a totally pointless exercise (admittedly this argument belongs on the improving the site forum and not here so I'm not pushing it but just mention it in reference to your comment which may be throwing a lot of stuff under the bus needlessly)

If I'm going to do this it has to be five lists minimum, and even that, limiting it to a top five will leave out some favourites, especially in Jazz. So I may cheat and show 2 Jazz titles. At least that will make me feel somewhat better about doing this.
I've just never had set in stone favourites from these sub-genres except for Dark Side Of The Moon and Permanent Waves. With the rest it's a pool of 5 to 15 or so, and it depends on my mood as to what I feel is the best that day. Love the lists, hope they keep on coming. I'm limiting it to 18 sub genres. |

You are not completely wrong. maybe the neo-team thought neo-prog is the best fit for Infringement. It also happens that bands/artist fall through the cracks because they don't fit anywhere or they get in evaluation hell and takes a really long time to be cleared and added. I also think some bands are in the wrong subgenre and some that would not even be added if they were evaluated nowadays. But that's another story.

To be fair I did go back and listen to Infringement's debut album (they have 3 in total) after I posted my comment and that does fit more in the neo prog category than the recent album. They are a band that has evolved, but nevertheless many will not listen to 'neo prog' and Jem Godfrey recently even stated in a yt interview with Andy Edwards that describing bands as 'neo prog' was like putting them in the trash. He has a point as it does seem a term that is diversive and seems reserved for bands that couldn't (or didn't want to) play the full blown classic style so simplified it for their own purposes to be more accessible to the post punk crowd (Post rock also did this but in a much more art based way). Also a lot of the time I don't hear that much difference between 'Crossover' and 'Neo' bands. They could easily be merged now.

I might add that Robin Armstrong has issued an instruction ahead of the new Cosmograf album to reviewers for them NOT to describe the music as “neo prog”. I suggested getting rid of this and other sub-genres ages ago, and got myself in a whole heap of trouble here, but I have not changed my mind. I believe that neo, crossover (something which exists merely in the head of PA collabs) and eclectic should be replaced by going back to an art rock category.

I didn't know "neo-prog" as a term was so divisive. Multiple tags would solve a lot of problems. Frost* is one of the bands in the wrong category, I have never understood why they are under 'neo-prog" on PA, when (IMO obviously) they should be crossover.
