I'm everything but a fan of that period. I've hated most of this stuff with very few exceptions.
My vote goes to New Order, anyway.

I think Marillion must be grateful to these bands, as they have been one of the reasons why a lot of people started buying neo-prog.
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

I'd choose Marillion over all of these bands too - apart from U2, obviously. Smile

I choose all of these bands over Marillion.

Cocteau Twins got my vote, but I like the majority of these.

1. U2 - October (easily!)
2. New Order - Power, Corruption and Lies
3. The Mission - Children
4. Jesus and Mary Chain - Darklands (but only because it reminds me of a Steve Hackett album) Tongue

Sleep No More is one of my Top 5 of all time albums. Seventeen Seconds is very very good. There are some more I like, but not quite at the level of these two.

I'm a huge fan of Cocteau Twins and Siouxsie & the Banshees. I went with Head Over Heels.

That said, I was introduced to Comsat Angels in a topic some time ago, loved it, and that deserves more attention from me. I listened to The Smiths Meat Is Murder (I'm trying to be Vegan, by the way) album again not too long ago. It has not connected with meas much as the subsequent The Queen Is Dead, but there is music I love on it.

Very nice poll. I'm not a huge punk fan, but post-punk is great. My vote as favourite second would have been Joy Division's Closer had it been listed, but I know you opted to leave Joy Division off. And of course that is your prerogative. That has become one of my all-time favourite albums.

I dropped Joy Division from the poll simply because they only have two albums to their name, but their spirit carries on through New Order. Thumbs Up

I've been a fan of The Smiths ever since their marvellous collaboration with Sandie Shaw, who go together like a Hand in Glove. Smile

^ Nice video. Yeah, love her vocals in that.

And I figured that would be the reason for excluding Joy Division. Makes sense.

I'd like to say that I have been a fan of Joy Division for Decades, but it's only in recent years that I really got into them.

Shared this dull anecdote before, but I was at a work party about a Decade ago and the conversation went to Joy Division. I just had to nod along. Same thing happened to me with Game of Thrones at a dinner party and with Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me at another party for a playwriting class. Now I can have those conversations, but the moments have passed. Regrets, I've had a few, but then again.... Now I would have lots to say and people would be begging to shut me up, just like at PA! ;)

^ I've never seen Twin Peaks or Game of Thrones, but I really love Julee Cruise's beautiful Dream Pop theme from Twin Peaks. Heart

^ I really like that song with her, but to be honest, I actually prefer Xiu Xiu's cover of it from their 2016 album Plays the Music of Twin Peaks. Xiu Xiu is band that could fit a post-punk poll by the way. I do love lost of dream pop, especially beach House which are big fans of Twin Peaks and were to make music for Twin Peaks: The Return.

I would not expect that experimental rock, dark ambient, drone, noise rock, dark jazz and gothic art rock album to appeal to you, but to me it's great.

I actually got into that Xiu Xiu album a year or so before I got into Twin Peaks so I heard many of their versions first. In one of the Interactive Polls about "originals and covers", Falling was my choice, or one of them. RIP Julee Cruse.

U2's October is a much more ethereal album than its predecessor, and yet it's just not quite as awe-inspiring. Still, I'd never want to be without it. Every now and then you'll find someone who thinks this is their best work ever. As one of the contemporary reviews said, "If Boy is magic, October is SORCERY!"

The only one of these bands I was a fan of in the 1980's were U2, although I've since grown to like Simple Minds and The Smiths too, especially after they teamed up with sixties pop sensation Sandie Shaw, where the two go together like a Hand in Glove.  Smile

Anyway, this is by way of a reminder that "Post-Punk Britannia: 3rd Album" is coming up tomorrow on Christmas Day. WooHoo! Party
