I know this is a controversial album, even for the band's fans. The general consensus seems to be that devoting three sides of a double album set to solo material from each bandmember was not the best possible idea after over 3 years without any new studio recordings. Nevertheless, the album was released, it sold well, was the major impetus behind a lengthy (if money-losing) tour, and inspired a follow-up album (Volume Two) of unreleased outtakes. While "Fanfare for the Common Man" and "Pirates" have remained popular to this day, the material on sides 1-3 is rarely (if ever) discussed. Even if this album isn't one of your favorites, which of the solo sides do you like best?

Lake.  Hallowed Be Thy Name is an amazing song.  C'est la vie transports me to an authentic candle-lit Italian restaurant.

...then Palmer and then Emerson.  I live next door to a concert pianist.  I don't possess the nerve to share Emerson's concerto with him.

Next to Brain Salad Surgery, I've listened to Works I more than any ELP album.

I favor the Lake side too. Not that I dislike the other sides (Pamer's and Emerson's), but I enjoy more the music that Lake composed for this album.

C'est La Vie is a superb love song. So I voted Lake. But the Palmer side with "The Enemy God Dances With The Black Spirits" and "L.A. Nights" (with lead by Joe Walsh) is a lot of fun.

Palmer side. In the last 25-30 years, when I decide to give Works a listen, it's only the group side and a few tracks from Palmer. It's been a long time since I listened to the Emerson or Lake side.

Yeah, despite 78,000 people attending their Montreal concert, playing before three sold out crowds at MSG, etc., traveling with a 70 piece orchestra gets expensive and will suck away any profits made at these concerts. They needed to get a good accountant to crunch the numbers before making that decision. They ended up dropping the orchestra after about a dozen or so concerts.

According to Greg Lake they were booking not just rooms, but the entire hotel. Along with the band, orchestra and crew, there were 140 people traveling to each city. Lake stated that every one of these people were ordering room service, having fancy dinners and expensive wine sent up to the room and it was Keith, Greg and Carl paying the bill. According to Greg, they ( meaning Keith and Carl too) lost 3 million dollars. The tour ended in November, 1977. However, ELP added several dates in March and April of 1978. Supposedly, those dates were to recoup the losses incurred by the band.

^ they ended up playing over a 100 gigs on the Works tour apparently. I was a bit shocked at that number. The proposed gigs at Earls Court were cancelled after punk happened! ( it's true)

I voted for Carl Palmer's side. He was working with jazz musicians outside of ELP and brought an element of this to the band in a cohesive and interesting way. He also featured a classical piece (2 part invention in D minor) with James Blades , his percussion tutor at the Royal College of Music.
ELP had intended to release solo albums concurrently but Ahmet Ertegun was not having any of it and insisted they do a group album first. In the end it was a fudge. The world watched and and it failed to achieve the success of earlier ELP albums. It was not just the structure it was the fact that they decided to move away from the more electronic based style of Brain Salad Surgery to the mainly acoustic stylings that were apparent on the album. Greg Lake was not the biggest fan of the heavy moog synth barrage and steadfastly refused to entertain any idea that they should go this way again. Lake also had had a big solo hit with I Believe In Father Christmas while Emerson was in the Italian and UK charts with Honky Tonk Train Blues, his homage to classic American ragtime like Scott Joplin. ELP played Mapel Leaf Rag on the Works tour as well. I like some of the Greg Lake/ Peter Sinfield sonsg but mostly it's a bit dull. Emerson's Piano Concerto is great and they opened with it at the Montreal Olympic Stadium gig! He wrote most of it on a boring train journey between Brighton and London and it was mostly inspired by Aaron Copland's Apalatian Spring.

Palmer states the case better for his individual efforts. Unlike his colleagues, Palmer's efforts display an expansion of his demonstrated genres of proficiency from the earlier albums. In L.A. Nights, Palmer works with Joe Walsh, which, in 1977, seemed most incongruous to us. In Food for Your Soul, we hear Maynard Ferguson and Doc Severinsen. In his adaptations and performances of Prokofiev and Bach pieces, Palmer formally exposes the classical training, which he shares with Emerson. These interpretations also flow well into the group's interpretation of Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man on the fourth, group side. Perhaps the album in question should have focused on the group's collective efforts during the Works sessions with less emphasis on the individual pieces? Of course, in the words of former Saints' Head Coach, Jim Mora, Could'a, would'a, should'a, don't mean s---,and you can put that in the paper for me.

I would rate them this way:

1. Palmer - 6.5/10
2. Emerson - 6/10
3. Lake - 5.5/10

Fanfare and Pirates I would rate around 7.5/10. A nice case study where together they're better than on their own.

We can lure the trucks out of their lair with tasty hamper lids.

A great poll question...

Side 1 gets my vote. That and KE9 - 2nd Impression are my two favorite Emerson piano works...

One of the best things about these polls is one never knows how they are going to turn out, even when a seemingly obvious topic is posted. Before actually starting, I would have guessed either Keith or Greg would collect the most votes. Now this has been up just over a week, and it's almost a 3-way tie! I truly had no idea Carl's side was that popular. Thanks to everyone who has participated, and to richardh for posting the huge tour itinerary: I had no idea they did that many shows on the tour, even in suburbs and college towns!

^ at 15 I was only just getting into ELP having aquired the earlier albums with the exciting album artwork and heavier rock sound (mostly!). Works Volume One was something different and I struggled with it. After Fanfare For The Common Man, Carl's side was the only thing on the album with any real energy. I played Tank to death and probably slightly preferred it over the debut version. Took me a few years to appreciate Keith and Greg's sides and also for that matter Pirates which had less of the obvious bombast associated with ELP. Many didn't like the album and with punk in the background it largely failed. ELO released a much better received double album only a month or so later which may also have contributed to the general view that ELP were no longer the big thing anymore. The follow up Works Volume Two was largely lambasted by the British press and they were on the way out especially with stories of them losing a million dollars a show in the music papers.

Keith > Carl > Greg
