Seems like there are a lot of appearances of jesters and clowns in European prog.
What are your thoughts? Any reason for why this might be? |

Jesters and clowns are images of profound historical depth within European culture. They represent the polarities of both joy and sorrow within human nature, aligned with how prog rock can explore complex emotional landscapes—for example, light-hearted melodies juxtaposed with darker lyrical content.
Progressive bands often dealt with complex themes, such as existentialism, human emotion, mythology, and social critique. Many progressive rock musicians draw their inspiration from literature—such as Shakespeare's plays that feature fools—or from the visual arts, including works depicting harlequins. These influences contribute to a rich tapestry of references that resonate within the sphere of European prog rock. |

Well, I have to say that I'm only familiar with Marillion's "Script for a Jesters Tear", but some quite interesting other answers so far.
