Anders (please come back) made a topic in May, 2021 titled "Some great 70's albums from Germany" (CLICK) , which was recently revived. The albums, all of which I really like, in his topic are:
Ash Ra Tempel - Ash Ra Tempel Can - Tago Mago Cluster - Zuckerzeit Faust - Faust IV Kraftwerk - The Man Machine Neu! - Neu! Tangerine Dream - Phaedra Here are some other album from German acts in the 70s that I have appreciated: Agitation Free - Malesch (1972) Amon Düül II - Yeti (1970) A.R. & Machines - Die Grüne Reise (The Green Journey) (1971) Ashra - New Age of Earth (1974) Brave New World - Impressions on Reading Aldous Huxley (1972) Can - Ege Bamyasi (1972) Cluster - Sowiesoso (1976) Dom - Edge of Time (1972) (multi national, but formed in Germany)*** Deuter - D (1971) Dzyan - Electric Silence (1974) Embryo - Embryo's Rache (1971) Faust - So Far (1972) Edgar Froese - Epsilon in Malaysian Pale (1975) Nina Hagen Band - Nina Hagen Band (1978)* Harmonia - Deluxe (1975) Michael Hoenig - Departure from the Northern Wasteland (1978) Kraan - Kraan (1972) Kraftwerk - Trans-Europa Express [aka Trans-Europe Express] (1975) Message - From Books and Dreams (1973) Neu! - Neu! '75 (1975) Nico - Desertshore (1970)** Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra (1972) Klaus Schulze - Mirage (1977) Tangerine Dream - Ricochet (1975) Eberhard Weber - The Colours of Chloë (1974) Yatha Sidhra - A Meditation Mass (1974) * Nina Hagen Band is not in PA, but musically relevant. ** Nico also is not in PA but I think musically relevant. She was born in Germany, which is why I opted to include this album I love even though this album was produced in England (primarily), and France. *** Even though Dom's Edge of Time is one of my very favourite albums, I missed it at first. It's listed at PA as multinational, but was formed in Germany and is very much Krautrock. I combined it in one like with Deuter even though it so very well deserves its own space. Of course there are a huge many more from the region and period and some popular names not on the list. I encourage others to make polls on the same topic. And feel free to vote for up to five albums from my list. Edited by Logan - October 22 2024 at 11:04 |

Edgar Froese, TD and Kraftwerk is all I can do unfortunately. Epsilon In Malaysian Pale is probably my favourite 'Non prog' mellotron album not that I know that many! I have heard the Klaus Schulze album at some point but it's been a while so I won't vote for that. I know nothing else on the list. If it's not got someone called Edgar or Frank on it then I'm struggling!

I absolutely love Kosmiche/Krautrock/electronic/fusion and more from Germany. France, Germany, and Italy have been three really important countries of music for me, and Krautrock and progressive electronic are two of my very favourite categories at PA -- I prefer that to more popular subgenres here such as symphonic prog generally. If you like things like Froese, TD and, Schulze, then Hoenig's album is something to try. I expect you'd like Ashra. For those into heavy psych, I suggest that Message album (heavy, psych, Krautrock).... All great stuff, I think, but I'm, of course, biased. |

Hi,
Goodness I still have all that stuff listed .. I think I might be missing one or two only!!! I'm partial to John Weinzierl's guitar playing in the title piece of YETI and really the rest of the album, and its wildness and touch ... kinda reminds me of Guru Guru's Ax Gernrich in those first 3 albums ... wild is the word, but it is also totally far out and off the scales of creativity, based on pure improvisation ... A lot of those German groups were quite improvised ... and it is the "gift" they gave us in rock music in my book ... and it provided new music ... a very special new music. Super kudos to TD and KS ... there is no one that can touch their catalog and ability ... totally insane and impossible to explain.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Let's see. Ege Bamyasi, Epsilon in Malaysian Pale and Yeti are the top 3 for sure, and then there are many albums I love between which I have a hard time to decide. OK let's look who is still at 0 votes to make my job easier... So Malesch and Desertshore get my votes. Kraan, TD, Schulze, Kraftwerk lose out by this criterion, and there'd have been a few more.
