With all the discussion recently about Fragile and its solo tracks, there's been almost no mention of this little song, solely composed by Jon Anderson. Of course, the whole band plays on it, so it's not really a "solo track". While not released as a single (that I'm aware of), it did manage to receive a lot of radio airplay, probably due to its brevity and its "sing-along" quality. It's been performed many times in concert, usually as a lead-in to Chris Squire's solo spotlight. And while most listeners prefer Fragile's longer tracks, do you consider "Long Distance Runaround" a worthy addition to this album?

I like HOTS, Roundabout and Southside a fair bit more, but Long Distance Runaround is a good track. The guitar part is a bit tricky. Rick Beato in one of his episodes some time ago was talking about one of the first cover bands he was playing in asked him to learn Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne and Long Distance Runaround and was speaking about being thrown right in the fire with those two songs. Noted session guitarist Tim Pierce was playing that tune when talking about Yes and Steve Howe in an episode of his.
I do think you have to play Long Distance and The Fish together. Howe playing the harmonics segues quite nicely into The Fish. |

It's really good. I don't have any strong thoughts to go with it other than I agree with the above comment that I would want to play it together with The Fish as as complete peice.

Voted for option #1. One of my favourite short songs by Yes. As said before, The Fish completes it.

The second option. I heard that Jon Anderson wrote Roundabout while he was navigating Glasgow's one-way traffic system, having driven the Long Distance Runaround from Aberdeen.

Very good on my book. Quite complex, especially when you try to play it with your band.

Call me a simple soul, but the rythm element is fabulous, let alone the vocals.

I'm not a huge fan of Yes, and I now rarely listen to Yes, but I have really loved Fragile, and "Long Distance Runaround" is part of my DNA. It's one of those songs that I know so well that I would not need to hear it again. It's a favourite of mine, and taken along with "The Fish", which I agree completes it, I find it pretty fabulous.

It's a nice little ditty that segues neatly into The Fish. I quite like the acoustic version on the Live At QPR video.

When this song was played on the Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe tour, it segued into...Bill Bruford's drum solo!

Other: Its really good with the Fish (not just an intro), and kind of average without. ..may seem strange, but thats how I've always felt about it: seems incomplete w/o the Fish following.

It's a showcase for Squire's unique approach to bass...and the opening has been my cell's ringtone for a long time.

I remember playing it at a Battle of the Bands back in ‘89 with another guitar player. We had great fun harmonizing the melodic riffs. It is a bit tricky, because the percussion and bass are syncopated. At some point, we just stopped counting and played it all by feel. The Fish is kind of psychedelic. We just mainly banged out the harmonics on that one as I recall. Fragile is one of my favorite Yes albums … along with The Yes Album. I rate it Absolutely Fabulous in honor of French and Saunders.

There are a few tracks on Fragile that I don't care for, but Long Distance Runaround is great.

A fabulous song which contributes to the overall tone of the album. I love the guitar's riff, it could easily fit in a prog arcade game.
