Two classic 1986 animated features about anthropomorphic mice. Both superb, and at the end of the day it boils down to personal taste, which one people might prefer.

Which one do you like better, PA? For me? Touch choice. I personally friggin love Disney's Great Mouse Detective for the plot, characters, setting etc. but on the other hand, American Tail has that signature Don Bluth bouncy dynamic feel that really tugs my heart in a way nothing else really can.

Oh, and I think that chamber style pseudo-avant-classical soundtrack to TGMD is absolutely gorgeous.

Hi,

I think the Disney film is more important, and probably was more into the progressive and historical nature of Disney's cartoons ... in that sense, I think that it was a much better film ... however, that is not a suggestion that there were not, around the world, other cartoons that deserved the mention for their work and design, and Anime, got a lot of traction for their work and such an incredible list of characters ... in this area, Disney limited the characters and its audience.

(Aside) ... I much prefer things like FANTASIA, which was the first film that put images in my mind to all music ... since that day, I have never seen or appreciated any music that did not give me some kind of visuals. The only sad side of it all is that other folks also did some nifty things, that no one will (likely) see if I mention them. The Italian film ALLEGRO NON TROPPO is a perfect example ... it is not exactly a send up to Disney at all, and it interprets a lot of music beautifully and some of it with humor ... the vignettes in between are not funny for many of us, but they give us a small moment to think about the piece we just watched, since the vignettes have no story or value otherwise ... except a couple of times when the cartoon could not get away and died away in the flames. It is sad, and funny ... and sometimes I think of it as the way that we look at so many of these films that we will never see ... let them burn and die! But I can tell you that many International Film Festivals show a lot of these things.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
