Here is a poll of some singles that have been released in 2024. This was inspired by a topic on the Dream Theater single in this poll. I understand a lot of people often aren't really into singles, but I also find it interesting to see who/what is active and from who/what we might expect further full length albums. To me the format is not as important as the music itself, but some music does work best in an LP or EP format, and some as singles.... Various of these I did not hear as singles (instead from full albums) and sometimes pre-album release singles are heard by me first.

The list below is my master list of ones that I like (I used RYM mostly), caught my eye, or I know have their fans here. Since I went outside my tastes in what I included, I found it too danged hard to limit to 25, so some options share spaces. I do like the vast majority of these. I am not keen on the DT or Leprous particularly, nor really the Judas Priest, but of course to each their own tastes. When it comes to much music on the metal side, I prefer music like Oranssi Pazuzu (very good) and Alcest. Multiple votes are enabled, so vote for as many as you like, and again please mention any that you like that are not in the poll. When voting, you need not vote for all the tracks by an artist, just vote for the artists with a track or more that you like (no more than one vote per act per person, please).

Incidentally, my last series got some criticism, and I always want to try to do better (eager to please, like positive affirmation, but tend to fail miserably), partially because some got confused by the omissions as they expected it not to be just based on my tastes. So that is a reason why I included some ones that I don't enjoy. Of course there must be a lot that I have not included and don't know about that I would enjoy and that others would enjoy, but I am already over 25 (25 is the limit for poll spaces) and research takes time. I already left ones off my master list that I like. If people want to cover others, I suggest making your own polls/ topics. but again, I encourage people to mention what they like that is not on the list. The poll itself to me is more of an accessory. I would not bother setting topics covering music this way, but I do find they tend to be more lively than when I just present normal list topics.

If there are any problems or mistakes, please let me know. Thanks.

Hope the topic is considered reasonably decently put together and thought out.    Takes quite long time to do such things, but of course it could always be better. And the other hand, the exercise is not meant to be taken super seriously. Sorry that it harder to read through than most polls, and this OP again is too long.

Oh, I'm the first to respond but not to vote. Greep has one already.

I should have specified that if there are multiple songs/ tracks with your vote, please specify if you have a favourite or favoured tracks.

I like to set a limit on the number of acts I vote for even when I like much more. I'll go with a top 7 acts because I am choosing multiple tracks from some as my particular faves:

Geordie Greep's "Blues". This is my favourite off his LP album, and it is a particulary black midi sounding track to my ears.
Beth Gibbons particularly for Floating on a Moment and Lost Changes
The Smile, especially for Foreign Spies and Friend of a Friend
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Frogs and Wild God particularly.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Grey Rubble: Green Shoots
Cindy Lee for Darling of the Diskoteque
Caroline Polachek (with Weyes Blood): Butterfly Net

^ Three of my particular favourites, thanks Richard.

People should feel free voting with very limited knowledge. I expected Greep to get the most attention, but do people have a preference when it comes to "Holy, Holy" and "Blues"? I like both but favour Blues. Unfortunately the video, which features the album cover of cartoon decapitation, is stupidly age restricted for "Blues".

And no votes for Dream Theater? While it's not to me taste, from the topic which inspired this I could see that some really like it.

Not a fan of the Dream Theater track. It's okay but seems to me that Prog metal has moved on in general. I also don't like the production (bass off the end of the cliff and drum sound not great ironcially)

I'm not a fan of Dream Theater, but I am quite okay with some of their music. This track was really anathematic to my tastes. I really disliked it, but I still listened to it twice. Maybe there's something to it that could grown on me (much like a bad movie) despite a sense of loathing. I'm not a big one for what I feel is show-offy music where they break into solos commonly, and LaBrie's vocals never appealed to me. LaBrie's vocals sound considerably processed here, much like processed cheese. I find the whole thing cheesy and lacking a kind of tasteful refinement. Seems tacky to me, but then one could say that of a lot of music I do like. Suffice to say, it is my least appreciated of this list, but as ever, to each their own tastes.

I think at this stage DT are just trying to keep the fanbase happy. They have been in slow decline for a while and Portnoy has been welcomed back for this reason. Is he likely to fix everything, I doubt. I like/love about 4 to 5 albums by them and poured over Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence when it came it. I still regard the 23 minute suite A Change Of Seasons (from 1995) with Derek Sherinian on keys as the very apex of prog metal. It never got better than that for me. Awake is also a very strong album I like a lot (Kevin Moore on keys).

I like that a lot too. My eldest saw them in concert not too long ago, wish I had been there. No offence intended, but Robert Smith is rockin' the scary granny-goth style.

That keeping the fanbase happy is complaint I have had with so many bands. I understand they want to make a living and not alienate their core, but I do value innovation, experimentation and trying other styles. I'd commonly rather edge than falling into a comfort zone. As we get older we do commonly become more conservative and less adventurous and it can became much harder to be innovative and experimental -- and then there are the fan expectations (hate it when some kinds of fans "ship" the members of the band too). There are some who I think keep on making fresh, truly progressive, and interesting music many decades after they start, but it's not the norm. The Astonishing I actually liked more than many, and that was something quite different from them that got shunned. Anyway, not sure how confident I am of anything I said in this post. I didn't listen to all of Change of Seasons, but I can say that I do appreciate that riffage. While I am not the biggest metal guy period, and Dream Theater has a tendency to do metal/ rock ballady stuff that does not appeal to me, I commonly like my metal heavier and eviler than Dream Theater. I like various industrial metal, post-metal, heavy metal, folk-metal, experimental and extreme metal.

^ I think it's always worth remembering that DT have actually shifted units unlike most prog bands. I value innovation for sure but DT often get caught when they veer too far from what is expected by their fans. I sense that they have lacked any real direction for a while, did the technical metal thing for a bit and then got a bit lost at what they were trying to achieve.
BTW Andy Edwards (ex IQ, Frost* and Magenta drummer) has done a very funny reaction video for those interested)
