Considered one of the pioneering bands of the "New Weird America" movement, Jackie-O Motherf**ker (JOMF) are a USA-based free folk project from northern California, formed in 1994 by multi-instrumentalist/turntablist Tom Greenwood and saxophonist Dwayne Hedstrom (aka Nester Bucket). Originally established in Portland, Oregon, there is no official explanation for their peculiar moniker, only that it was suggested by Hedstrom and coined by his friends in the San Francisco noise rock band Mudwimin.

Beginning as a Public Enemy-inspired unit experimenting with improvised compositions over self-crafted tape loops, the duo soon sought to cultivate an inclusive collective which could withstand and continue in the face of lineup changes, and JOMF's ranks swelled in the wake of their first three albums (released via Hedstrom's independent label Imp Records). Greenwood and friends deftly splice free jazz, post-rock, space rock, psychedelic folk and acid-fried electronics to form their unique style; listeners can detect echoes of Can, Ash Ra Tempel, Faust, AMM and YaHoWa 13 blending with North American roots music, particularly gospel, country, Appalachian folk and stated Delta blues influences Robert Johnson, Charley Patton and Skip James. JOMF also stand out among their New Weird America peers for their modified thrift store turntables and tape machines, deftly incorporating samples from used LPs of Folkways artists, Iannis Xenakis and even Funkadelic into their live and studio recordings.

While Bucket has since left the band, Greenwood has been accompanied by over forty revolving bandmates over the decades, the more notable names being the on-and-off Honey Owens (the co-founder of Nudge who moonlights as Valet), Joshua Stevenson (of Von Bingen and Kemialliset Ystävät), Brooke Crouser (member of HṚṢṬA), Nick and Jed Bindeman (of Eternal Tapestry), Samara Lubelski (of the Tower Recordings and Metabolismus), Fluffy Erskine (of Set Fire to Flames) and, for a brief stint as live bassist, Natalie Mering (better known as Weyes Blood). Jackie-O Motherf**ker's discography stretches to nearly twenty full-lengths across an array of labels and over a dozen live releases, the latter issued via Greenwood's own Unity Sound Archive (U-Sound) label, though the group's prolific output slowed considerably in the wake of 2011's Earth Sound System. The collective's most recent lineup as of 2018 (and likely already out-of-date) consists of Greenwood, Sapat's Alan Zignoto, Black Forest / Black Sea's Jeffrey Alexander, Peg and SPF's Dave Easlick and woodwindist-for-hire Michael Whittaker.

Often critically compared to Sunburned Hand of the Man, No-Neck Blues Band, Sun City Girls and Pelt, Jackie-O Motherf**ker will also resonate with fans of Ignatz, Evening Fires and Sun Watcher.
