I've only just got round to Season 1 which is on Paramount+. I didn't hate it and the episode with Barbara Hershey I loved. Mostly it gets a bit lost narrative wise and doesn't quite make you believe it's out in the great expanse of space. The fact that Headey isn't in Season 2 might be a good thing (I won't miss that dodgy northern accent) although your rating isn't quite suggesting that . 5/10 for Season 1. I'll probably watch Season 2 when it's available as there isn't that much sci-fi out there and it's my favourite genre.

The Acolyte
Having recently learned of the absurd and deeply unfortunate reactions this series received ~ the accusations of 'wokeness', the blindness and utter lack of comprehension or discernment that the Star Wars galaxy is a vast corollary of thousands of races, worlds, powers and mysteries ~ its cancellation is a travesty of ignorance overcoming art. Creator/writer Leslye Headland offered a deeper, more meaningful story than the kid & family oriented Mandalorian, exploring the viewpoint of practitioners of the Dark Side of the Force but also how the Jedi dealt with the ongoing relationship between its own and the temptations of the darker arts. A talented cast including Lee Jung-jae, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, and Manny Jacinto bring the story alive with sensitive performances giving fans a more serious, adult plotline that takes place near the end of the High Republic a hundred years before SW:Episode One involving two twin girls created by a coven of Night Sisters. Currently a second season is not planned partly due to low ratings as well as fan disagreement and bad online responses. Hopefully, somehow, Season Two will be made as it ended with quite a cliffhanger, but as of this writing there are no intentions to revive it. And that is a real shame. ^ Thank you for this. Never been a big Star Wars fan and couldn't watch the Mandalorian, actlually hated it. I may well check out the Acolyte if I go back to Disney for a month ( I want to see The Old Man Season 2 so I may).

Twisted Metal Season 1
Humour lead post apocalypse drama starring Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz. Enjoyable if a little bit 'slight'. The speeded up car scenes look really fake but Mackie and Beatriz enjoy a nice chemistry and also good to see Neve Campbell in a villanious role of sorts. 7/10

^ Never got into video games. In terms of TV adaptions the recent Fallout is superb although I also enjoyed Halo a lot. Twisted Metal has been kept a lot 'lighter' with a lot less pretensions and presumably is made on a much smaller budget. That makes it stand out a bit and is in its favour. Hopefully they might get a bigger budget but not holding my breath.

Twisted Metal was great.
Just finished watching a US drama on BBBC iPlayer called Apples Never Fall. 7 episodes starring Sam Neil and Annette Benning. It had promise but a slow burner with a rather unsatisfactory conclusion. I'll blame it on the missus as it was her choice. 5/10 |

^ I watched that straight after Strictly. I love both Annette Benning and Sam Neil so that might be enough to drag me through it.
I expect you are watching Nightsleeper but if not then worth a look. I'm only through 3 episodes but it's very addictive 'terrorist on a runaway train' stuff with lots of twists already. Also I've always had a soft spot for the lovely Alexandra Roach

Nightsleeper - no we aren't watching it - but it does look good from the trailers I've seen - will give it a go sometime. No, our (her) time is taken up with Strictly Come Dancing (and it's sister show) - but worse than that MAFS UK - urggh. And now Great British Bake Off as well.
But we did squeeze in the start of the 4th and final season of Snowpiercer last night and it's still pretty good. |

Finished Nightsleeper yesterday (well early hours of the morning actually!). It's brilliantly written and the cast (inc Joe Cole, James Cosmo, Sharon Rooney, Alexandra Roach and the wonderful David Threlfall especially) do a great job. Even at times some great humour and a hugely ironic but satisfying twist at the very end. It's quite a ride! 9/10

Franklin
Michael Douglas scores a late career high with his portrayal of Benjamin Franklin (one of America's founding fathers and a successful and accomplished diplomat/policitician but never to become president). This deals with his attempt to forge an alliance between America and France in order to help fight British rule. It's almost entirely set in Paris and features a superb cast of top French and British actors as well as Douglas himself in the lead role. I found it especially interesting in capturing the mega rich and their opulent Parisienne lifestyles of the day. 8/10

I did get to watch this in the end partly on my sisters recommendation but also I do like Sam Neil a lot (he's also in an Aussie drama called The Twelve which is worth catching) I binged the last 5 episodes over one evening so quite enjoyed it. The ending is something of a cop out though and I wonder if that is how it was in the book. Not terrible but probably could have been punchier. Nevertheless I would go slightly higher with 6.5/10. Now onto Joan starring Sophie Turner of GOT. Only watched the first episode but it's very intriguing stuff. Set in the 80's it's about a young mother trying to get away from an abusive husband as well as making her way in the world. She decides that the uncoventional way might the best it seems.

The Killing Kind
This psychological drama is as good as anything I've seen in the genre for a while. Emma Appleton taking the lead is a new face to me but Colin Morgan will be familiar for playing Merlin in the 00's BBC drama. Lots of twists and turns and constantly kept me guessing. 8/10 |

^ one for you maybe, Mexican film director Alfonso Cuaron has made a TV series called Disclaimer starring Kevin Kline and Cate Blanchett. I'm struggling to follow it, just baffling!
according to one reviewer Its seven episodes are marvels of engineered tension: Mysteries turn inside out, narrators grow unreliable, facts evaporate, and the sand never stops shifting. |

I don't regularly have Prime, and I just finished The Peripheral. I thought the acting was a bit spotty and over-the-top sometimes, but I really liked this series. Unfortunately I had not realised that it had been cancelled (due to the strikes, despite having been renewed before that) until after I was halfway into it. So the last episode, which did feel a bit rushed ended on a very unsatisfying note. Such a shame, it's been one of the sci-fi series that I have most enjoyed over the past few years. I think that I will now read the book that it's based on now by Gibson. So many series I love with cliffhangers/loose rends got cancelled or were not renewed. I wish they would have plan in place in advance to finish up the story otherwise you've kind of wasted the viewers time. In this case I think they did and you can't foresee everything. It's not easy doing a production like this, there are sets to consider, actors and others other commitments.... For a while I favoured mini-series/ limited series. 1899 (Netflix, 2022) is another I hoped would continue. |

^ I know I talk up Apple TV a lot but they generally do commit to finishing their stuff and have several interesting shows in production especially Silo and Severance at the top of the list as well as the sci fi epic Foundation.
On Amazon Prime are you watching The Devils Hour? This could be right up your street. First season was a bit weird but the second has just started and it's brilliant (so far). It stars Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine who are both great in it.

^ I've just looked up The Devils Hour on IMDb as I'd never heard of it. I'm going to give it a go as it looks like our perfect type of TV show. Thanks for the heads up.

My brother has been telling me to try Apple TV; it's about time I do. I have wanted to watch Foundation; loved the novels. Thanks for the recommendation, I do now plan to watch it. For one thing I love Peter Capaldi. He was a magnificent Doctor (my fave of the modern Doctors), amazing character in Torchwood, and Malcolm Tucker is such a "great" character. Ah, I wish he and Moffat had stayed longer with Doctor Who. And Jessica Raine has a Doctor Who connection. I did start on a new series with Prime called The Feed. Rather too soap opera-y to me. Always seem to like David Thewlis, who is in it (another of my favourite actors). I like weird, depending on the weird. Weird is how people would describe many of my tastes. I adore Twin Peaks, and my wife stopped watching it for getting too weird. |
