1977: Blue Oyster Cult - Spectres - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kLOMYmEsMm41FdpGXPyGgVOhQUrBviizk
The one monstrously good song everyone remembers from the Spectres album. No doubt a big favourite in Japan too. By the way, Blue Oyster Cult has no known connection with the Blue Oyster Club in Police Academy, where they dance the Gay Gordons, allegedly. |

Any which way you cut it, 1984 was especially huge, thanks to Ted Templeman's production and Donn Landee's engineering. Naturally, MTV played a role in the album's massive success. For sentimental reasons, 1984 gets my vote, followed by (in alphabetical order)
Blue Öyster Cult – Spectres Heart – Private Audition Jefferson Starship – Modern Times (an album more people should hear) Rainbow – Difficult to Cure Rush – A Farewell to Kings *Kansas's Two for the Show is a live record, and I tend to group those outside studio albums unless they consist of original material. |

The whole flick's a laff riot. The sequel's very good, but the ones after aren't nearly as funny (though still worthwhile). I mean, who doesn't love the uncanny vocal talent of one Michael Winslow? |

Journey - Departure
(I'm ignoring Rush from these polls...)

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

The first run of six albums in the 1970's was the best era for Rush, but they were an easy band to ignore in the 1980's.

I can't disagree more, Paul! Permanent Waves (1980) and Moving Pictures (1981) brought them more fans in droves. They got tighter, more focused, became better songwriters and players. I think Geddy's best singing is circa '80-85, too. More listeners arguably picked up drums and bass thanks to Neil and Geddy. Permanent Waves sold its first million copies in two months (it took Hemispheres fifteen years). And we all know how successful its follow-up Moving Pictures has been. As I've said elsewhere on this site, I've no use for their self-titled debut nowadays. I don't listen to live versions of those songs, either. When they start becoming the Rush we love is on Caress of Steel. But I'm one of those guys who prefers Hemispheres to 2112 in no small way. |

^ Yeah, you're right! Spirit of Radio was played endlessly on the radio in the 1980's and Rush were impossible to ignore.

Spectres. Gotta love Godzilla, but my favorite songs on this album are the more melancholic or dark ones - such as Fireworks, I Love the Night and Nosferatu.
