NIGHTWISH Wishmaster, Wishmaster, grant me a wish..... Give me three of the best (not to mention most beautiful) sirens in the world of Symphonic Metal. And, as if my magic, here they are:- Tarja Turunen (for the Passion and the Opera); Anette Olzon (for the Cadence of Her Last Breath) and Floor Jansen (for her Endless Forms Most Beautiful), along with all of their associated bands. Are Nightwish Finnish? No, they're just getting started. ![]() 1997: Nightwish - Angels Fall First - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8qIVh-XT76vcOs1NIwxp1jyQMsIvDwFk 1998: Nightwish - Oceanborn - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8qIVh-XT76uzgU01IQi6ZV19_-oBF7bU 2000: Nightwish - OSIRIS If you think music from the Middle East is no great sheikhs, then think again, because this is the musical equivalent of a black gold oil strike in a barren desert. Take a Closer Look and check out the incredible sound of Osiris from the tiny desert kingdom of Bahrain, where prog is as rare as a Bar Mitzvah in Saudi Arabia. Shalom.

PINK FLOYD Syd Barrett, the guitarist with Pink Floyd, was a creative genius in his Time, having written such psychedelic Relics as "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play", where his abstruse lyrics were sometimes Obscured by Clouds. Sadly, his overuse of the psychedelic drug LSD led to Brain Damage and mental illness. In A Momentary Lapse of Reason, he's rumoured to have walked all the way from London to his home in Cambridge. While most Pink Floyd fans will be aware that Shine On You Crazy Diamond was written as a tribute to Syd Barrett, I wonder how many Pink Floyd fans know that their first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, was a chapter from Kenneth Grahame's book, "The Wind in the Willows". It's with Sorrow we remember that Syd Barrett (1946-2006) and Richard Wright (1943-2008) are no longer with us and they're now Comfortably Numb, having both gone to The Great Gig in the Sky. I've never seen Pink Floyd perform live In the Flesh, but their music will live on forever. No Prog-Rock band will ever Eclipse the music of Pink Floyd, no matter how much Time goes by in The Endless River of eternity. The space-themed songs of Pink Floyd Speak to Me with special appeal because one of my passions in life is Astronomy Domine. It's nice to Stop for a moment and dream of One of These Days leaving Mother Earth behind and flying Round and Around the universe forever. It'd be Goodbye Blue Sky as I Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun. I'd be Learning to Fly with A New Machine capable of unimaginable speeds in Interstellar Overdrive. I'd fly with the Pulse jets Flaming past The Dark Side of the Moon towards the Fat Old Sun and then out into the Empty Spaces beyond. Eventually, I'd arrive at the Alpha Centauri Cluster One star system looking for Signs of Life where there are Two Suns in the Sunset. I've often wondered Is There Anybody Out There in the vast universe or is there Nobody Home. I Remember a Day back in the mid-1960's when landing a man on the Moon seemed about as likely as seeing Pigs on the Wing. At the Time, The Dogs of War had just been unleashed in Vietnam, when the USA took the disastrous decision to Meddle in a foreign war in a faraway land. The more recent calamitous decision to invade Iraq in 2003 has resonant Echoes of the Vietnam War. Both terrible wars bring into stark contrast the Poles Apart difference between war and peaceful space exploration. American Presidents Keep Talking about one day landing a man on Mars and plans are now Coming Back to Life for a Mars mission. I have High Hopes that we'll one day land men on Mars and that will be A Great Day for Freedom. I'll be Lost for Words if it ever happens in my lifetime. It'll be Another Brick in the Wall of space exploration where Money is no barrier to scientific discovery. The first men on Mars will be Fearless explorers who've made The Final Cut and they won't Run Like Hell at the prospect of One Slip-up leaving them Marooned on a distant planet. Thanks to the Internet, we're now living through some of The Happiest Days of Our Lives and Prog Archives is One of the Few websites devoted to Prog-Rock. It's just the website we needed to Breathe new life into the genre, which appeared to be dying out in the late 1970's with the arrival of Punk Rock. It was a case of Us and Them, with "Us", the prog-rockers, ranged against "Them", the punk-rockers. Prog-Rock is now Coming Back to Life with a vengeance and there's much More than A Saucerful of Secrets just waiting to be rediscovered in the wonderful world of Prog-Rock. The choice of music these days is virtually unlimited and it's not a case of Any Colour You Like as long as it's black. To any of my friends who haven't yet discovered this amazing site, I say Wish You Were Here with me to enjoy it. I can hear the Delicate Sound of Thunder outside and the rain's pounding against The Wall. I'm a lover of all Animals, and I often wonder how Pigs, Sheep and Dogs cope when they're On the Run outside in the middle of a thunderstorm. I love to watch a thunderstorm at nighttime and I'll often open the curtains in order to Let There Be More Light coming in from the distant flashes of lightning, which are never Obscured by Clouds. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - September 21 2024 at 04:00 |

QUATERNA REQUIEM (WIERMANN & VOGEL) Holy Moly! For those who like RIO music, this is Brazilian band Quaterna Requiem, whose classically inspired Latin name also hints at some marvellous, classically-inspired music within their Symphonic Prog repertoire. I've heard a whisper that they even have a Benedictine Monk in their line-up, so you can receive a blessing at the same time as listening to the music.

RENAISSANCE - Northern Lights: A Story for All Seasons
The Prologue to this tale begins with a Trip to the Fair, held annually by The Sisters of Mercy charity. The trip led to The Discovery of the book "One Thousand and One Nights". I Remember the Golden Thread of the story concerns The Captive Heart of Scheherazade, The Entertainer of the Rajah Khan, a Midas Man of immense riches with a Black Flame burning in his heart. The Air of Drama in the Opening Out of the story tells how Scheherazade finds the Golden Key to saving her life is to relate the tale of the 1001 Nights. She wins over the Jekyll and Hyde nature of the King with her exotic tales, and he shows her Kindness at the End by managing to Spare Some Love in his black heart by marrying his Precious Love. She becomes his queen in this dramatic tale of Kings and Queens and lost Innocence. One of the Pearls of Wisdom I learned from the book is that Love Goes On to conquer all in the end when Love is All you need. I'm a Wanderer at heart and the book inspired me to travel on a Secret Mission to the Distant Horizons of Istanbul On the Frontier of Asia aboard the Orient Express. It sometimes feels like time is Running Away from You and I was Running Hard like a Bullet out of a gun in The Race to arrive on time At the Harbour. I arrived just in time to set sail across the English Channel on the Ocean Gypsy ferry and leave behind the Island of Great Britain. I love the Sounds of the Sea and it was a beautiful day In the Sunshine, underneath the Carpet of the Sun which glimmered like sparkling Porcelain. Upon arrival in France, I felt like I was Bound for Infinity, with the most dramatic adventure In My Life just about to unfold. Can You Understand how good it felt to realise a dream when I'd Let It Grow in my heart for so long? I still had a long way to go though but at least I was Closer Than Yesterday to realising my dream. The Face of Yesterday was behind me now because this was the Day of the Dreamer! I dreamed of travelling to exotic places like the Island of Kalynda, A Magical Isle with a Waterfall which sparkles Blood Silver Like Moonlight and where The Vultures Fly High in their Flight over distant shores. That was about as likely as seeing Faeries Living at the Bottom of the Garden though and my dreams vanished as quickly as the flames on a funeral pyre when only the Ashes Are Burning. My real ambition was to eventually travel north from Istanbul to Kiev to experience exotic Things I Don't Understand, including those mysterious Ukraine Ways. I'd have to be careful to avoid Touching Once on the delicate subject of the current war with Russia though. I was planning to head to the northwest of Mother Russia where I'd heard the extreme Cold is Being like the inside of a freezer. I'd love to see the Northern Lights for the first time with their Majik shimmering Symphony of Light. It'd be like one of those awesome moments when you could sing A Song for All Seasons and Cry to the World with joy and shout "Can You Hear Me now"? I had a long journey ahead but I was looking forward to being Back Home Once Again with my Friends, when I'd be sure to remind them that I Think of You when I'm away. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() THE YARDBIRDS A British blues band which featured three of rock's greatest guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, and which led to the formation of two even greater bands: Led Zeppelin and Renaissance. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - January 09 2025 at 01:47 |

TRAFFIC Are you ready for some Medicated Goo with a Hole in My Shoe all mixed up together in a Rock and Roll Stew? Then Gimme Some Lovin' for Traffic, a Brummie band who'll leaving you Feelin' Alright, featuring a core line-up of Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason. Traffic came to a standstill in 1974, but that wasn't their Last Exit, as Traffic reunited again twenty years later in The Last Great Traffic Jam, for which I'm eternally Glad.

Blind Faith's eponymous 1969 album featuring a controversial picture of a topless 13-year old girl on the cover was too risqué for conservative America and had to be changed for the American market. URIAH HEEP It's time to celebrate the music of the Very 'eavy, Very 'umble Ken Hensley & Uriah Heep. Ken was the driving powerhouse force behind Uriah Heep between 1970 and 1980, featuring on no less than thirteen studio albums. Who can forget the fiery vision of the tank rolling across Salisbury Plain on their second album cover, or the reflective silver third album cover where you could quite literally Look At Yourself in the mirror. Ken Hensley has always been one of the Demons and Wizards of heavy keyboard prog, and his song-writing skills were put to full use with the concept album, The Magician's Birthday, featuring fantasy cover artwork by Roger Dean. Ken is a Free Spirit who's always Eager to Please his devoted fans, and he relished the Sweet Freedom to pursue his dream in the magical Wonderworld of prog. In 1973, it was a Return to Fantasy for Ken's first solo outing, Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf, a High and Mighty album of hard and heavy prog which burned briefly but brightly like a Firefly. All was not well in the Uriah Heep camp though with singer David Byron - the Innocent Victim of alcohol abuse - being replaced by John Lawton. The three albums with John Lawton From Time to Time offered a Glimpse of Glory, but no one could quite match the epic soaring vocals of Fallen Angel David Byron. Finally, Ken Hensley left Uriah Heep behind in 1980, embarking on a new series of Conquests in his burgeoning solo career.

He's been involved with a number of "very 'eavy, very 'umble" bands during his early years, including two albums with The Gods: "Genesis" (1968) and "To Samuel a Son" (1969), one album with Head Machine: "Orgasm" (1969), a self-titled album with "Toe Fat" (1970), and another self-titled album with "Weed" (1971). Ken Hensley appeared on thirteen Uriah Heep albums in a row, from their first album, "Very 'eavy, Very 'umble" in 1970, right through to their "Conquest" album in 1980, when he left the band he'd founded shortly afterwards due to the age-old band problem of "artistic differences". In the mid-1980's, Ken Hensley appeared on two albums with the American Southern Rock band Blackfoot: "Siogo" (1983) and "Vertical Smiles" (1984). He's also recorded two Live albums each in 2001 and 2002 with his two former Uriah Heep bandmates, John Lawton and John Wetton. More recently, he's recorded two studio albums under the name Ken Hensley & Live Fire: "Faster" (2011) and "Trouble" (2013). Ken Hensley launched his solo career in 1973 with "Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf", when he was still very much the driving force behind Uriah Heep. Two of Ken's Uriah Heep bandmates featured on the album: Gary Thain on bass and Lee Kerslake on drums. He's since recorded eight more studio albums with his most recent solo album "Love & Other Mysteries" arriving in the record stores in 2012. It's time now to take Ken Hensley's loud and proud first solo album off the shelf and blow off the dust and wipe away the cobwebs and give it a listen. The album opens in magnificent style with a tremendous power ballad: "When Evening Comes". Ken Hensley is in fine voice here and he's a very accomplished guitarist too, as he demonstrates here with some phenomenal soaring power chords and glittering glissandos. This dramatic refrain is just as strong and powerful as anything Uriah Heep have ever done, representing a dazzling entrance onto the solo stage for Ken Hensley which he can feel justly proud. Stunning debut albums like this one only come along "From Time To Time" and that's the title of our next song. It begins as a gentle strumming acoustic guitar number and blossoms out into a high and mighty passion play of stupendous sonic splendour, in true Uriah Heep style. Think of the magnificent majesty of "July Morning", and that's the kind of epic song you have here, only without David Byron's extravagant high-pitched vocals. When the dynamic keyboards appear at the midway point, that's when the song really reaches up into the stratosphere. It's back down to earth for "A King Without a Throne", a fairly routine and plodding Blues- Rock number without any great Demons and Wizards keyboard histrionics. It's time to put the umbrella up now for "Rain", which features Ken in full romantic balladeer mode. It's a gorgeous piano ballad featuring these moving heartfelt lyrics:- "It's raining outside but that's not unusual, But the way that I'm feeling is becoming usual, I guess you could say, The clouds are moving away, Away from your days, And into mine." ..... The moment when the gorgeous choir joins in is truly inspirational. This mellifluous romantic melody is guaranteed to brighten up the dullest of rainy days. We've reached the halfway point now with "Proud Words", a rousing and rollicking rock & roll song with a boisterous attitude. Ken Hensley's clearly not in the mood to stand for any nonsense here as he loudly and proudly urges us all to:- "Stand up and fight, Or you'll lose your right, Do you want to stand in a line, Fightin' hard to hold on to your mind." ..... It's a rockin' good song to close Side One, which sounds like a rousing call to arms. We've struck lucky and hit musical gold with "Fortune", a resonant reverberant refrain with High and Mighty Ken Hensley at his exhilarating and exuberant best. It's a true Return To Fantasy in a glorious Wonderworld of classic Uriah Heep pomp and passion. It's a song with all of the storming power of a tank rolling across Salisbury Plain. This is where we get to hear the booming and bombastic sound of Ken Hensley having the Sweet Freedom to do what he does best of all - delivering dynamic and dramatic Hard Rock with all of the explosive power of a stick of TNT. It's very 'eavy, but not so very 'umble. There's a nice change of pace for "Black Hearted Lady", an uplifting romantic ballad with Ken Hensley wearing his heart on his sleeve with these bittersweet lyrics:- "Reading between the lines I find, You don't mean what you say, You cheated and you lied, And how you made me hurt inside, You turned my days into darkest nights, And re-arranged my dreams, You're just not what you seem, Black-hearted lady." ..... It sounds like Ken was writing from bitter personal experience with those emotionally-wrought lyrics. It's time to "Go Down" now for a lovely acoustic guitar ballad. It's a charming heart-warming song carried along on a harmonious wave of rich golden guitar chords and with Ken Hensley in fine impassioned voice. In an album that's choc-a-bloc full of great songs, the penultimate song "Cold Autumn Sunday" represents the highlight of the album. It's a passionate power ballad that pulls out all the stops, featuring a glittering display of stratospheric guitar riffing and a rousing honey-voiced choir that's guaranteed to lift the spirits up into the heavens. This is THE BIG anthemic number on the album with all of the grandiose splendour and magnificent majesty of a great royal occasion. And finally, here comes the real shocker..... Ken Hensley goes Country! Yes, really! "The Last Time" is the last song on the album and it's a twangy Country song, adding a countrified string to Mr Hensley's versatile musical bow - although it's hard to picture Ken Hensley wearing a Stetson hat and cowboy boots. "Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf" is a magnificent debut for Ken Hensley and it's an album that any discerning connoisseur of classic Prog-Rock can feel proud to have on their dusty shelf. You don't HAVE to be a Uriah Heep fan to love this stunning album, but it might help. It's not as hard and heavy as Uriah Heep, but it's an album bursting at the seams with pride and power and romantic passion. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pre-Uriah Heep bands and albums featuring Ken Hensley ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Solo albums by Uriah Heep members, past and present. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 2003: John Lawton Band - Sting in the Tale - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuIHxlI11V5m16LlA2kB3C6Fz1SKcH5dJ 2004: John Lawton Band - Shakin' the Tale - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVhwICJ8LMs 2012: John Lawton & Intelligent Music Project - The Power of Mind - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kSzNtxANqt22v7V89JSchYh-9Z4hle2Yw 2014: John Lawton & Intelligent Music Project - My Kind of Lovin' - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k4sdnyWZa_cbH-EJZusLZnmxFnJny1sn0 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 2017: John Sloman - The Taff Trail Troubadour - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kHnQuBEZu-r9Zmm7iX7d3ZiSnQye2rOws 2018: John Sloman - El Dorado - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kKVy2z0bzQRpxVuyWsGOUcvk-CHz0TXU0 2020: John Sloman - Metamorph - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k_yNwvLga__jek4rB0wKFl7JkWOisQdhI 2022: John Sloman - Two Rivers - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mnCCeh_nZ_7iIA2KuRXPoe6oVUW0UNnQA 2024: John Sloman - Vaudeville - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k1yYq4vNkZWsUAIbVJ-cXKx_MTYMs6PL8 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() LUCIFER'S FRIEND It's our Turn to Remember John Lawton (1946-2021): a great singer with Lucifer's Friend, the Les Humphries Singers, and of course, his three albums with Uriah Heep. VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR H to He, Who Am the Only One who doesn't like the Pawn Hearts album? Yes, that would be me then, and that's no Godbluff, as it appears I'm the only one here who doesn't like Pawn Hearts. We may disagree on our prog favourites, but The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other out of politeness. ProgArchives is absolutely Vital for prog lovers and proves that there's Still Life in prog at Present in 2020, and nothing can ALTer that fact. Prog-Rock might not set any World Records for album sales, but A Grounding in Numbers of members here at PA reveals that prog still has a decent following, whichever angle of the Trisector you look at it from. Who cares what the jaded music press thinks about prog. Their views Do Not Disturb me at all. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1991: Chris Judge Smith - Democracy 1994: Chris Judge Smith - Dome of Discovery 2000: Chris Judge Smith - Curly's Airships 2005: Chris Judge Smith - The Full English 2006: Chris Judge Smith - The Vesica Massage 2010: Chris Judge Smith - The Climber 2011: Chris Judge Smith - Orfeas 2013: Chris Judge Smith - Zoot Suit 2016: Chris Judge Smith - Requiem Mass 2020: Chris Judge Smith - The Solar Heresies and the Lunar Sequence 2021: Chris Judge Smith - Music from the Garden of Fifi Chamoix 2021: Chris Judge Smith - Old Man in a Hurry 2023: Chris Judge Smith - The Trick of the Lock 2023: Chris Judge Smith - Mr. McKilowatts Dances Edited by Psychedelic Paul - January 22 2025 at 11:55 |

WALLENSTEIN Are you ready for a Blitzkrieg of prog from a band who've been rocking Mother Universe across the Cosmic Century for over fifty years now? Wallenstein are arguably one of the Big 3 of German Symphonic Prog (alongside Grobschnitt and Triumvirat), and if you have No More Love for the dross that's played on the radio these days, then why not give a listen to Germany's Blue Eyed Boys and let them entertain you with their wonderous Stories, Songs and Symphonies.

YES It's hard to imagine a time Beyond and Before Progressive Rock came along. Yesterday and Today, Everyday's a good day with the music of YES, and if there's one band who knows all about Survival, it's this group of Astral Travellers who've been around longer than any other prog band. It hasn't all been Sweetness and light though where Every Little Thing could escalate into arguments and Drama within the group when they came Close to the Edge of splitting up in the mid-1970's, what with so many Fragile egos at stake. Despite many changes of line-up though, YES are still going strong today even though there are no original members remaining in the band. Looking Around at the YES line-up today, Steve Howe is the only semi-permanent presence in the band, having been with YES since 1971. The Quest goes on to attract a new generation of YES fans with Mirror to the Sky reflecting well on the latest incarnation of Great Britain's eternal prog legends.

FRANK ZAPPA Zoot Allures! We've reached the ultimate artist on the first international A-Z list already. Yes, it's finally time to Freak Out and Sheikh Yerbouti with the Mothermania of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. They're no Over-Nite Sensation though and they're not Just Another Band from L.A. either. Hot Rats! No!! Frank Zappa (1940-1993) has a career spanning thirty years, but with a posthumous career spanning just as long again. Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of Zappa, when some of his albums have the same unappetising appeal to me as Lumpy Gravy or a Burnt Weeny Sandwich, but they're all here (or they will be eventually) and they're all Absolutely Free!

Seeing as it's a long time between now and the next international A-Z list in January, who would you choose for your own international A-Z list of prog favourites?
