I'm talking personally curated by you playlists that don't cover full albums.
I made a lot of online playlists mostly to go with certain topics. I have done them on youtube, others uses Spotify or on other online platforms. Into the 80s and 90s I used tape to tape, record to tape and radio to tape. Then I made CD-Rs in the 2000s. Since George started making playlists for Interactive Polls and then I started doing the same, I have made many playlists both to go with topics here, to share some of my favourite music, and for my own listening pleasure. I still do like to listen to full albums but I also have enjoyed choosing a favourite tracks off lots and lots of albums that I like. It' as different way to listen to music and I find choosing the tracks to be a pleasure. Of course some here have been much more ambitious with internet shows, radio shows etc. and one of these days I will finally start doing that. I want to get better equipment. I was wondering how many others might have enjoyed doing this and if some want to share their curated playlist (say choosing one fave song per act). I use youtube, and it's very easy after registering to add videos to a playlist of your own making. The one I made that is in my signature is one I made that I particularly like (it's now missing one video, and it has an extra at the end by St. Vincent). This one has 85 of my favourite acts acts with 170 tracks in it (the idea for mine is two tracks per artist, no more than one per album, but one video went down and I have one extra). Click on the top right icon in the embedded video to view all tracks in the playlist. Or you can watch on youtube (I don't get ads, but others would when watching on youtube). https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4IKuxIZkenfvukL_Y8VBqzK If any others have ones to share, I'd love to check them out. It's a neat way to share some of the music that means a lot to us, I feel, and it offers various highlights. I commonly try to keep the tracks on the not very long side for such things. I really like the idea, and I loved making mix tapes in the 90s. My big problem with them today: There's no time to listen to them
I know, we should "make time". It's not easy with a family, job and house ...

I have a job (not that busy right now), a family, and houses. My youngest is now 17, so not much parental care required, and the other has now moved out (20). You have your site of course to take care of (that probably takes up lots of time), a no doubt more demanding family, and you listen to lots of music in your own way. I don't find it takes very long to make a playlist and I often listen to these in the car, while working on the house etc., or while working as I work from home anyway. If one shares a playlist, which could be as long or short as you like (well, should be a few at least) one is not obligated to listen to other peoples.
The playlists were in part by-product of making making many topics at PA, which did take many hours cumulatively, but then I rarely watch TV or read for enjoyment these days. My family is always busy with their own stuff (my wife works way too much). |

This won't come as a surprise to some of you to learn that I have never made a mix tape (wouldn't know where to start, being a complete tech-phobe who doesn't own a mobile phone!)...
the ONLY way I have ever listened to music for the past 40+ years is to put on an album (from my own collection... by and large, if I don't own it physically, I don't play it) and play it from start to finish, rarely missing a track unless its particularly excruciating. Furthermore, I often tend to listen to discographies thru, so 2 or 3 days ago, I played Camel's debut, I'm now on Dust & Dreams and will probably get around to A Nod and A Wink by tomorrow morning? I suppose this is because I'm very firmly an 'album' man... the artist created a record to be listened to, with all the tracks selected and placed in a particular order, as a single work of art. I realise I will be in a minority in holding to this view and I do not say that anyone else is wrong... far from it. What you do Greg is a labour of love and credit to you. I admit, I visit Youtube to try out bands someone has recommended, that I think I might enjoy... but this is only on the basis that I'm thinking about purchasing the physical product and again I start from the first track and work through...

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Currently my 4 year old daughter is the biggest time-consuming factor, which is great since I love her and she's adorable. Fortunately both with job, the website and running/gym I can listen to music at least part of the time. I don't want to discourage the playlists at all, I just wish I could make more time to listen to them.

Jared; not surprising. Follow your bliss (if ethical),
I kind of like the creativity (of a limited sort) of putting together collections in particular order that I have control over as the artists did not make the music for me, and sometimes it was the labels/producers who chose the order. It's the editor and curator in me. Sometimes there will be re-releases in different orders of albums. I mostly do listen to full albums and the playlist, say in the first post, is based on listening to full albums and then trying to pick a track from each that somehow particularly affected me or that I want to share with others who might be looking for a taste of an artist. I find for a forum that sharing a track rather than a whole album can be an efficient way to delve into artists, one can hone that more to particular tastes and lead to some good conversations about very specific music. I got very into this with the Interactive series of poll where we would posts tracks on certain themes. I was not one of the more competent ones when it came to discussing the actual music, but I would always listen to everything posted and would try to share thoughts on the music commonly. Mostly the playlists are just for my own enjoyment, but the choosing itself aspect I really enjoy. I loved making some series here where I chose a favourite track of mine from albums for each year from 1960 until now. I discovered more albums through the series as some years were relatively scant on releases of music that excite my current tastes. A feeling I have wanted to rekindle since being at PA was when my friends and I would get together and share our music collections. Those would be full albums, but I find that more awkward when it comes to things we don't all know at PA on the whole. I have listened to a lot of full albums here for PA work, especially while on the Eclectic team. I mostly stream music these days, and download. The medium is not that important to me, and I do find it useful using my Smart phone to listen to music (I have an iPhone), and my iPod Touch before that. I do still like to put on vinyl records, but CDs are not of much interest to me anymore. Mike: I loved having a four year old daughter. That was a magical time. Enjoy it. They grow up so fast, it has seemed to me, too fast. ------------- Anyway, useful to know if people at this forum are into doing such things (have the time and inclination). It's something I would like to do more of, but it is better if others have the same interest. Not into making blogs where I just do my own thing without interaction and participation. |

I have my "Now That's What I Call Prog" playlists (from 1967 to 1971 so far), but I'm essentially a full albums listener, the same as Jared.

Same here - I'm a compulsive albums listener. However a few years back on the site formerly known as Twitter I used to run a Sunday evening music presentation (in the style of a radio show) - usually 20 tracks with a common theme - mostly mainstream rock & pop, but lobbing in a few prog tracks whenever I could.
This site is very helpful in researching on themes, if anyone is interested: https://www.playlistresearch.com/themes.htm |

^ Thanks for the themes pages. Very US oriented, but many interesting ideas for non-American peeps (aka USians) too. I looked up "Accounting" with the song from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life in mind, which was indeed in their list.
I'd have loved to present such a show. In my youth I did a little Nightclub DJing. I would have loved to turn off the House and put on some Kate Bush. Actually, there was a Club song that sampled music from Kate Bush's "Cloudbursting" by Utah Saints. My favourite Interactive theme that I came up with, by the way, was Heaven-Sent and Hell-Bent for duos of contrast (and the title works as a Doctor Who reference from the Capaldi years). |

I'm already familiar with most artists in your playlist, from the interactive polls. I heard North Sea Radio Orchestra on a local radio yesterday and thought "Why do I keep forgetting about them? They're amazing", and here I see them again. I'm an album listener, I tried last year to make a "top 100, 1 song per artist" playlist on Spotify and wasn't motivated enough to finish it. We have at least 3 songs in common though.

^ Nice. Those lists can take quite a bit of motivation, but I can find great motivation in procrastinating, and I commonly do such things as a tool of procrastination when it comes to putting off things that I should be doing. Which is exactly where I am right now. Work ever awaits and I ever like to wait for work. :)
You might want to share what you have so far. |
