The only one of these I've heard is the Zappa, but jazz?

Frank Zappa will be in all of the up-and-coming Jazz Fusion polls, so I couldn't possibly consider leaving his first album out of this poll, even though it's not jazz. Anyway, that was the odd one out mentioned in the intro. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Frank Zappa wins this poll as most of the other albums in the poll aren't nearly as well known. Hey, I just noticed all of the unwanted computer gobbledegook has disappeared from my text (even though I'm using my Brave browser), at least for the time being anyway.

Not a single one in my personal top 20 of the year this time. And. what the hell is Freak Out! doing there? It's not by Zappa btw. Paul Bley Trio - Touching Lee Morgan - Search for the New Land Sun Ra - The Lady With the Golden Stockings (aka The Nubians of Plutonia) Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil Chico Hamilton - El Chico Komeda Quintet - Astigmatic Bobby Hutcherson - Components Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage Andrew Hill - Smoke Stack Jackie McLean - Right Now! The Joe Harriott Double Quintet - Indo-Jazz Suite Joe Henderson - Inner Urge Don Cherry - Complete Communion Duke Pearson - Wahoo Anthony Williams - Spring Ed Thigpen - Out of the Storm Herbie Mann - Monday Night at The Village Gate Steve Kuhn Trio - Three Waves Yusef Lateef - Psychicemotus The Charles Lloyd Quartet - Dream Weaver ...but The Magic City is in my top 25 though.

That's true, but it does say 1966 on the album cover, so I thought I could just about get away with including it in the 1966 poll. Edited by Psychedelic Paul - September 03 2024 at 08:38 |

The only two albums I know from your list are by the two Herbies - Mann and Hancock - and Maiden Voyage was in the previous 1965 poll. By the way, the Mothers of Invention are here because I thought Zappa fans would complain if I didn't include them, bearing in mind Frank Zappa will be featured in all of the following Jazz Fusion polls.

Waka/Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo are indeed two superb Zappa jazz albums.

Love Blow-Up. Even if first released in 1967, I'll give it a vote. Otherwise I would go with John Coltrane's Ascension.
If including Frank Zappa, then I would have left out the Mothers of Invention albums for this, and maybe his Lumpy Gravy collaboration. The first just under Zappa's name is Hot Rats. That said, whatever, no need for me to be pedantic. |

Miles Smiles
Freak Out: outright odd Why should Wayne Shorter pout? Unless Bacharach Hancock'ed in front of Coltrane's Insane saxophone shout... Ting! Sigh and moan at Henry, Herb, and Herbie's Jazz record pile Nina cute, Let it all out at Evan's and Benson's Uptown Hall...she sang, I have no doubt if Davis's Smile would have been polled He would win by miles... in a rout. Yes, that's the Freaky odd one Out that no one's voted for so far, although I may have doomed the album's chances by predicting a win for it earlier.

Yes, Francis Vincent Zappa & The Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra & Chorus's Lumpy Gravy is the first under his name. So I would think that that is the best place to start with Zappa, and not Hot Rats. that said, for Paul complete discography type of listening, I think starting with The Mother of Invention ain't a bad way to start with Zappa, and I'm glad that I listened to those The Mothers of Invention albums. Because genre can change depending on the album, I kind of think of these series titles as loose guides to the artists (even if it does not fit individual albums). Labels are useful, but the music itself matters more, I might say. :) Edited by Logan - September 03 2024 at 12:26 |

I was taking my cue from Wikipedia, which has Freak Out listed as the first Frank Zappa album, even though some might say it's not a Zappa album. |

This may be the only year in which Miles doesn't appear, but never fear, Miles' Smiles is coming up in the following year.
