Still Genesis. I've never listened to So.
It gets interesting for me when we get to Us (Gabriel's 8th album) which I like. I'm not such a big fan of W&W. |

The Lamb. Putting on pants is like throwing Hedstrom numbers at a Bingham plastic during a crapbag flea market dunking.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway over So, which are the only two album I have heard in full from the list. The Lamb... is my favourite Genesis album even if it is, or because it is, primarily a Peter Gabriel release. I do really like other albums by Genesis, Trespass is a favourite album of mine.
I've done this story more than once, details will vary, and it never gets compelling.... About 30 years ago while at the closing party for a play, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was playing. It was the vocal-less "Hairless Heart" that really made me take notice and got under my skin. I asked the lighting director about the album and I remember he mentioned something about Peter Gabriel, probably I had recognised Gabriel's voice and mentioned him. Anyway, quite some time later I still could not shake "Hairless Heart" from my hairy head (had I tried it just would have shaken off dandruff). I went to the record store and bought So hoping it had the music. It was not to be. Then I bought Gabriel's first (at least I was more in the temporal ballpark). Come the 2000s (2003?) I started trying to search for the music online. I used amazon samples mostly (and later the nefarious Napster). Then I found it -- a short sample of "Hairless Heart". Odd that I didn't just search for Peter Gabriel related music, or did I? I think I wanted a challenge, as in the meantime I discovered Van der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant, PFM, rediscovered Camel, Gryphon, Focus and ELP as I recall. Anyway, I often think that I discovered this site and really got into Prog due to my infatuation with and search for "Hairless Heart", but So what? It's still a mundane, boring story, but such is the story of my life. ;)* At least on the whole. |

Paul, in the "Disappointing Follow Up" thread you mentioned The Lamb was too long and gave it a "baa" rating. Why did you rate it your first choice, four stars here?

Simply because I originally gave The Lamb a 5-star rating, but having listened to the album again recently, I realised it was way too long and would've been much better as a single album, so I downgraded it to a 4-star album. Baa. Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 23 2024 at 09:13 |

I wrote a terrible review for Lamb ('terrible' as in badly written) but gave it 5 stars anyway. Now I would give it 4 stars (but not going to change it). The first disc (in CD terms) is perfect and could be my favourite prog album of all time if it had been released seperately as a 'Part One'. 'Part Two' just gets a bit messy for my taste but then many prefer their 'prog' this way I've noticed.

Pretty much ( I assume you mean The Waiting Room). But the second part overall feels a bit stretched out and tiny bits of filler here and there. Part One is perfect in my estimation.
