Glass Construction: The Complete Works of Philip Glass
04. 1975: Philip Glass - Music in Contrary Motion - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJZlsM1LXQs Two Pages - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNoI2UWBXb4 Music in Contrary Motion that's hard to play and even harder to listen to. Strangely, I'm finding the offbeat music of Gentle Giant to be quite listenable after all. Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 17 2024 at 00:14 |

05. 1976: Philip Glass - Music in 12 Parts (Part I) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rMuwBA8xMw (Part II) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZT2rUDfuWE Music in 12 Parts, all of which are indistinguishable from each other and in a musical score which appears far more interesting written down in musical notation than it does to actually listen to. 06. 1976: Philip Glass - Einstein on the Beach (opera) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lIB1Za0mJ0vRmIbL6gv9IonJ2fawvmEKI A washed-up three-hour opera, back in the days when a Philip Glass opera was not something to be enjoyed, but something to be endured. |

07. 1977: Philip Glass - North Star (soundtrack) - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kcn3uIA6tSB-o_cZnS0fULZsshopip0vg Following the plain Glass era, where a dull and repetitive Philip Glass album was something of a pane to listen to, we're now entering the bright and sparkling double-glazed era. starting with North Star, a soundtrack to an obscure film than no one has ever seen and with a title track which was later covered by Mike Oldfield! Philip Glass - North Star Mike Oldfield - North Star (a far more interesting version) |

08. 1979: Philip Glass - Satyagraha (opera) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKq64tL0GeME0p_J-6t32FD1iVrrBsCYa Don't be put off by the unpronounceable name. This Philip Glass opera is actually quite good. It's not exactly earth-shattering, or even Glass-shattering, but it is a big improvement over Einstein on the Beach. |

09. 1981: Philip Glass - Glassworks - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Stu7h7Qup8 The breakthrough commercially-appealing album which shattered any preconceptions about the music of Philip Glass. GlassWorks was aimed at a wider audience which was reflected in it being the best-selling Glass album to date. No more incomprehensible three-hour operas or music in twelve interminable parts - at least for the time-being anyhow. |

10. 1982: Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi (soundtrack) - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mDCT4_Ky0CAnSs7AexWupMqE4qQRsnc7s Translating as "Life Out of Balance", Koyaanisqatsi is a soundtrack album that predicts a gloomy dystopian future for mankind. No, it's not another Roger Waters album, but the first (and best-known) of the "qatsi" trilogy. |

12. 1983: Philip Glass - Akhnaten (opera) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgZD-wYM2ETQtXCBMtFMGM32DY22jLohM The culmination of a trilogy of biographical operas - following on from Einstein on the Beach and Satyagraha - Akhnaten is a three-act opera telling the story of Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV) who was said to have untold riches, just like the phony pharaoh Mohammed al Fayed, who owns Harrods. |

13. 1983: Philip Glass - The Civil WarS (opera) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOpPe1J9AA34BPJm5Cs6g_MajufBjkwbp Civil wars can often be the most uncivil, bitterly fought wars of all, just like The War of the Roses between Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.. We should thank our lucky stars then that this vast epic, five-act opera - centered around the American Civil War - has never been performed live in its entirety, which would surely test the endurance of the most ardent of opera lovers. 14. 1985: Philip Glass - Mishima (soundtrack) - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nVsXCA2i0ehA2apAx7f0UOUa-crQ7SzGs Konichiwa. We're taking a banzai-charge through the life story of frustrated writer Yukio Mishima who fancies himself as a weekend warrior in the samurai tradition, although if he wanted the ultimate challenge, he could try his luck as a contestant on the crazy Japanese game-show Endurance. |

15. 1986: Philip Glass - Songs from Liquid Days - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EK1-t-sIpc Philip Glass reflected on what songs would sound like if the worlds of pop and opera collided. Well, the time for reflection is over because they're gonna sound like..... This! Songs from Liquid Days features Suzanne Vega, Laurie Anderson and Linda Ronstadt!
