Two modern Swedish bands and two of my favorites from that country. Bonus points if you know how to properly pronounce the names of either band (especially Jordsjo which has stumped me).

I have heard of both and think I have heard music of both, but I will say that I only know Agusa. Prima Materia was somewhere on my list of 2023 albums of the year.

Hi,

It was a good listen, but I think I like Agusa better, for the sense that their long pieces are really well designed and defined, and not appear to be simply a bunch of different segments glued together ... Agusa has a nice continuity that is rare in a lot of music these days.

Both are very nice, and it's difficult to decide which I seem to enjoy better, and likely it is the fact that I heard Agusa first and loved their album. The Jordsjo album did not strike me as strong. But still nice.

Both about equally. I discovered both last year along with Lumsk. The latter has female vocals which is very nice. BTW I like the latest Agusa album although it's quite different to Prima Materia has to be said.

Jordsjø are from Norway though - any name with a "ø" cannot be Swedish, it's not in the alphabet. In Swedish it would be "Jordsjö". But same pronunciation Smile

Yes and no. In some Swedish accents/dialects, sj-ljudet in sjö is pronounced similar to the Norwegian way, and in others, including Rikssvenska, it's more of this "velar" phoneme.

Also, Mike, are you perhaps from Skåne? I've heard that the Skånska mål is pretty distinct.

^ I'm not a native Swedish speaker myself - but yes, I live in Skåne. There are huge variations within Sweden (and Norway) when it comes to pronunciation ... and in the clip you recorded, it sounds almost identical from what I can hear.

Equally problematic in pronunciations are words with "sk", like "sked" (spoon).

Yes it is. Själ (soul) and skäl (basis) are homophones. When spoken fast, själv (self) can sometimes sound dangerously similar to the aforementioned examples as well.

^ Like I said, there are variations due to local dialects. For instance, the word "kanske" (perhaps) is usually pronounced like the words you mentioned in your last words, but sometimes also with a sound like the english "sh".
