Apologies if this poll has been done before - if it has, I haven't seen it!

Boy or October for me - I didn't like much after those 2. So, my choice is October - just.

The Unforgettable Fire. Didn't really listen to much from them after that one. Each elephant laser house has a cheese grater signed by Gustav Holst.

Achtung Baby , Joshua Tree, Rattle & Hum
(Why isn't R&H on here?? It's mostly studio stuff) Unforgettable fire, Under a Red Blood Sky The rest..... Zooropa I lost interest after Pop. And TBH, a lot of their early stuff rattles me the wrong way - can't hum anything (except for NYD) . Edited by Sean Trane - August 10 2024 at 01:14 |

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

"War" brings back some good memories of just being married and having no money. I bought it based on New Year's Day that was on the radio and at the same time got Tears For Fears "The Hurting".

The Unforgettable Fire. I actually think U2 are alright all the way from their debut and up to Zooropa.

Saw them on the 'Boy' tour in a tiny venue in Devon, didnt think it would be my thing but as another spotty, mullet-laden teenager, i went along and was actually quite impressed.. then saw them on the unforgettable fire tour (with the Waterboys) at the Brixton academy.. god ive never known such a sticky floored s***hole.. but they had an amazing quad sound system and i was mesmerised.. since then they've never resonated with me for some reason. So my vote goes with 'the unforgettable fire'.. If you like the cover then check out the book 'in ruins- the once great houses of Ireland' all incredible infrared sensitive B&W film prints.

I can't really get past Bono being such a bell end. I purchased Joshua Tree but the 80's production gave me a headache so I couldn't listen to it. Stuff like New Years Day is okay and felt relevant then. The eighties was a terrible decade for civil unrest in the UK and the IRA were stepping up it's campaign on the British mainland. People were trying to escape from all the tension that was in the air. U2 stuck a chord then. Now they seem like a second or third rate band that just got lucky. IMO.

I like all of U2's albums apart from Pop, which is an album I can gladly Leave Behind.

The fact that none of the post 1991 albums have received any votes says a lot...

Hmm, tricky one. I used to love them but like others, I lost interest with Pop, although Atomic Bomb is quite good. I would probably go for Joshua Tree although I played it to death when it first came out and haven't listened to it for years.

This has been up for over a month, so I'd like to say thanks to everyone who participated. And our current winner is... The Unforgettable Fire? Who would have seen this coming? While many listeners enjoy this album (and it was my very first U2 album), it also has some very outspoken detractors who criticize the production or the "experimental" tracks.
For myself, the "out-of-nowhere" Boy album will always be my favorite, followed closely by October. At one time, The Joshua Tree would have been in the running, but that album was so overplayed that I rarely listen to it anymore. I'll close by agreeing with Cristi that it was very interesting that NONE of the post-Achtung Baby albums received even one vote!
