Have you heard of the new band Black Midi? Their debut is crushing and totally innovative. Check it out if you haven't.

If you have heard them, how would you consider them in relation to prog? I think they're certainly progressive, but not in the classic (Yes, Genesis, etc.) sense, though their song "953" gives me major Schizoid vibes.

Here's a link: https://youtu.be/WsBhNRITtdk

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

Eh, maybe Tweez era Slint, but definitely not Spiderland, and I also don't think This Heat is a great comparison either, nor do I think any of these bands really have a whole lot of hooks in the traditional sense. I think they most sound like this specific Tera Melos live session:

No idea what song, and not sure they've won the Hyundai Mercury Music Prize I am watching but wow!
That was actually quite impressive so looking forward to getting into the album!

Apparently they have broken up according to Geordie and Cameron's Instagram. Damn shame.

One of the best prog bands of the 2020s for sure. They broke up? Wah Sick(function(){function c(){var b=a.contentDocument||a.contentWindow.document;if(b){var d=b.createElement('script');d.innerHTML="window.__CF$cv$params={r:'8b1a30e01d0a67a3',t:'MTcyMzM5OTkxNS4wMDAwMDA='};var a=document.createElement('script');a.nonce='';a.src='/cdn-cgi/challenge-platform/scripts/jsd/main.js';document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(a);";b.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(d)}}if(document.body){var a=document.createElement('iframe');a.height=1;a.width=1;a.style.position='absolute';a.style.top=0;a.style.left=0;a.style.border='none';a.style.visibility='hidden';document.body.appendChild(a);if('loading'!==document.readyState)c();else if(window.addEventListener)document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',c);else{var e=document.onreadystatechange||function(){};document.onreadystatechange=function(b){e(b);'loading'!==document.readyState&&(document.onreadystatechange=e,c())}}}})();

Black Midi will be future legends. They actually somehow reinvented rock or prog or something. Three flawless albums, and then call it quits. Probably too much talent and strong (+difficult, I've heard) personalities in one band to be able to keep it together.

That's a real shame, though there is talk on reddit of some sort of ruse to promote LP4. I doubt it though and there seems to be some decent direction in their solo projects.

I followed the ersatz announcement of their breakup (which from what Geordie said on Instagram may just be an "indefinite hiatus"), the public nature of it seems to have blindsided Cameron and as a result he deleted his initial surprised reactions. The good news is that Cameron used the opportunity to announce the imminent sessions for a solo record with a "great band", so we should have something to look forward to.

And if - on the VERY off chance - this IS a ruse, we'll likely see something on the 20th of this month per Geordie, or else he'll maybe announce something of his own then. He's playing several NYC shows soon, I'll be seeing him at TV Eye.

Well I can cross them off my 'future of prog' list that's for sure. Sorry but 3 albums is not much of a legacy to go on. They were just getting started..

Maybe. It was enough for Stooges, Nirvana, Nick Drake, Portishead, Jimi Hendrix... countless band have have three albums or less that really "counts", but are still considered essential/important in the history of rock/popular music. Sometimes a band reputation and importance grow bigger with time because they ended before the started releasing sub-par albums.

Doubt it. I wouldn't describe Frank Sinatra rapping with musical passages that are complex only to be complex and don't fit with the song, as reinventing anything. Decent musicians, though.

If that's true then their three releases will be reissued every few decades culminating in the 50th year special expanded edition with bonus tracks, right?

I don't know if they have any bonus tracks to offer, but sure. Except I'm under no illusion that the world in 50 years will resemble our world very much, so then again maybe not. But that goes for the Close to the Edge 100th anniversary boxset as well. That it won't happen, I mean.
