Hello!

A few of you here may be interested in my relatively recently established YouTube channel, The Acid Trash Jamboree, a place where I show and review all manner of offbeat, obscure, weird and wonderful music from my personal collection (as well as films, if they're your thing too).

Types of music covered: psychedelic/space/progressive rock, acid/freak folk, harsh noise, industrial, power electronics, drone, black/death/doom/heavy metal, free jazz/improv, fusion, outsider, dark ambient, neofolk, avant-garde, dungeon synth, Krautrock/Kosmische, lo-fi, post-punk, psych pop, freakbeat, American Primitive etc etc...

Feel free to check out the archive here...

I've already covered quite a lot of stuff since the end of last year, though just to give a quick flavour of the channel, here are the links to some of the more prog-oriented episodes I've done lately...

Watch here:

I just uploaded a new episode for those interested...

Episode 40 - Prog & Psych Picks! Bernard Szajner / Time (USA Folk Psych) / The Unspoken Word / Caetano Veloso

Watch here:

https://youtu.be/Yxq89EJQ-VY

In this video we take a look at yet another stellar selection of progressive and psychedelic music- the dark and abrasive electro Zeuhl soundscapes of Magma and Gong associate Bernard Szajner (a.k.a. Zed), obscure late '60s US combo Time and their eclectic blend of hazy baroque folk, Velvet Underground-ish rock and wildcard avant-garde influence, The Unspoken Word's similarly unpredictable, but altogether more gentle LP of dreamy chamber psych and Caetano Veloso's notorious fifth album- a head-mashing assemblage of atonal sound poetry, musique concrète experimentation, intense fuzz freakery, gorgeous chilled out Samba pieces and...annoying children's music?!

Music discussed and shown...

Bernard Szajner "Some Deaths Take Forever"
Time "Before There Was...TIME"
The Unspoken Word "Tuesday, April 19th."
Caetano Veloso "Araçá azul"

Cheers!

Episode 42 - Prog & Psych Picks! Vita Nova / We the People (USA Garage Rock) / Wigwam

Watch here:

In this video we take a look at another diverse selection of progressive and psychedelic releases- from British Invasion-obsessed pop psych and snotty garage grind, to exploito soundtrack-worthy freak sounds and thoroughly gooey mid-'70s soft prog!

Music discussed and shown...

Vita Nova "Vita Nova" (Garden of Delights)
We the People "Mirror of Our Minds" (Sundazed Music)
Wigwam "Nuclear Nightclub" (Esoteric Recordings)

TATJ is back with a brand new episode...

Episode 43 - Odds 'n' Ends - Wild Silk / Ronnie Wood / Wooden Horse / Yamash'ta & The Horizon

Watch here:

As I say at the start of the video, strap yourself in for some serious "stylistic whiplash" here, as I discuss a comprehensive collection of (occasionally) psychedelic orchestrated harmony pop by the obscure '60s combo Wild Silk; the strutting late night R&B, sweaty swamp funk and cosmic country melancholy of The Birds/Jeff Beck Group/Faces/Rolling Stones stalwart Ron Wood's understated second solo platter; both long players by the West Coast-obsessed Aussie folk rockers Wooden Horse and a startling recording of the lone improv freak out concert by Yamash'ta & The Horizon, a genre-blurring quartet headed up by legendary percussionist Stomu Yamash'ta and also featuring Taj-Mahal Travellers' drone god Takehisa Kosugi on deadly fuzz violin duties!

Music discussed and shown...

Wild Silk "Visions in a Plaster Sky - The Complete Recordings 1968-1969" (RPM Records)
Ronnie Wood "Now Look" (Warner Archives)
Wooden Horse "Wooden Horse" (Elegy)
Wooden Horse "Wooden Horse II" (Elegy)
Yamash'ta & The Horizon "Sunrise From West Sea "Live"" (Wewantsounds)

Cheers!

A new video has just been posted for those interested...

Episode 44 - Documentaries of Delight! Freakscene: The Story of Dinosaur Jr. (Blu-ray Review)

Watch here:

In this video we take a look at Freakscene..., the story of the seminal US alternative act Dinosaur Jr., who fuse everything from raging hardcore punk, gloomy goth, yearning country rock, wigged-out wah-heavy psychedelia and dissonant noise to great, "ear-bleeding" effect!

Despite some serious personality clashes during the '80s, which famously lead to original bassist Lou Barlow being kicked out of the band, in 2005- miraculously- the original core trio of Barlow, drummer Murph and singer/guitarist J Mascis managed to set aside their differences and reform!

Freakscene... follows the ups and downs of their career, often in very candid detail and also features 'talking head' cameos from a whole bunch of famous faces like Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon (both ex-Sonic Youth), Frank Black (Pixies), the late Mark Lanegan (ex-Screaming Trees), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Henry Rollins (ex-Black Flag) and even Hollywood actor Matt Dillon!

Cheers!

I just posted a new video for all those that are interested...

Episode 45 - Coruscating Compilations - "godspunk" (Pumf Records)

Watch here:

In this video we take a look at the excellent "godspunk" series from the Blackpool-based label Pumf Records. One of the longest running and most eclectic comps in the UK underground, "godspunk" has been a going concern since 2003, taking in everything from punk, psychedelia, prog, ambient and techno, to thrash, black metal, free jazz, noise and power electronics over a whopping twenty-six volumes and counting! Curated by Howl in the Typewriter mastermind pStan Batcow (ex-Membranes/Dandelion Adventure/Ceramic Hobs etc) and co-funded by the contributing artists, "godspunk" is a compilation like no other!

Cheers!

Watch here:

In this video we take a look at a wide variety of underground Black Metal releases, ranging from the droning, soupy dissonance of cult Finnish duo Circle of Ouroborus and the funereal psychedelia of their fellow countrymen Dolorian, to the decayed and depressive stylings of French acts like Grimlair and Mortifera and the mystical pagan forest metal of Polish one-man act Slavland!

Music discussed and shown...

Circle of Ouroborus "Islands" (Dark Adversary Productions)
Deviser "Unspeakable Cults" (Kyrck Productions)
Dolorian "Dolorian" (Wounded Love Records)
Der Gerwelt / Nargathrond "Der Gerwelt / Carnal Lust and Wolfen Hunger" (More Hate Productions)

Episode 48 - Underground Heroes! Nocturnal Emissions (Nigel Ayers / Caroline K) - A Partial Overview

Watch here:

https://youtu.be/JHltWTw0Kik

In this video- the first in a series dedicated to long-running, eclectic and prolific "underground heroes"- we take a look at a handful of albums by the UK project Nocturnal Emissions; from the cold, alienating industrial grot-scapes of their earliest work to the altogether more esoteric and ambient-leaning releases of the late '80s!

Music discussed and shown...

"Tissue of Lies - Revised" (Dark Vinyl Records)
"Drowning in a Sea of Bliss" (Touch)
"The World is My Womb" (Soleilmoon Recordings)
"Invocation of the Beast Gods" (Staaltape)

Cheers!

Episode 49 - Electronic Excellence! Patrick Vian (Red Noise) / You / Kluster

Watch here:

In this episode, we kick off yet another mini-series- this time dedicated to artists who are or were predominantly active in the field of electronic music. Up for analysis are the lone solo LP from Patrick Vian, on which the ex-Red Noise man imbued his mellow synth jams with Zeuhl and World Music flavours; three intriguing efforts from German cosmonauts You, who started firmly in the "hero worship" zone, aping Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, before blasting off into lesser explored galaxies on their '80s works; and the two studio albums from the legendary Kluster (Conrad Schnitzler/Dieter Moebius/Hans-Joachim Roedelius), whose cold and bleak improv soundscapes pre-dated industrial music by a good few years...and once left me in dire need of a mid-afternoon "power nap"!

Music discussed and shown...

Patrick Vian "Bruits et temps analogues" (Staubgold)
You "Electric Day" (Bureau B)
You "Time Code" (Bureau B)
You "Laserscape" (Bureau B)
Kluster "Klopfzeichen" (Think Progressive)
Kluster "Zwei-Osterei" (Captain Trip)

Cheers!

Calling all Keiji Haino/Fush*tsusha maniacs...

Episode 50 - Box Sets of Doom! Keiji Haino / Fush*tsusha / Lost Aaraaf "Soul's True Love" (4 x CD) - Full Review!

Watch here:

https://youtu.be/IFgZzlqlsL0

Rejoice- this is the 50th episode to date of The Acid Trash Jamboree!

To celebrate, I've taken a long overdue "deep dive" into one of my favourite items from the collection, the monstrous 4 x CD box set "Soul's True Love" (Purple Trap, 1995), which comprises of some of the earliest known recordings by Japan's very own "man in black", Keiji Haino!

Taking in two epic festival performances of wonky freeform jazz rock by his earliest band Lost Aaraaff; a beguiling collection of late '60s/early '70s home recordings, where he grapples with a vast array of instruments; a 1973 solo suite originally composed for a dance troupe, which ranges from ghostly forest ambience to churning harsh noise (!) and wrapping up with a raw 'n' ready serving of late '70s Fush*tsusha, this is yet another crucial stopping-off point for devotees of the endlessly fascinating Japanese experimental scene!

Music discussed and shown...

Lost Aaraaff "Concert From the Genyasai Festival"
Keiji Haino "Suite Reverberation: The Third Heart"
Keiji Haino "Suite Reverberation: Forest of Spirits"
Fush*tsusha "Untitled"

Cheers!
