THE FOUNDATION Is this the real life, or is this just fantasy? Mask (subtitled "A Fairy Tale of Real Life") is quite simply one of the best Dutch Neo Prog albums you're ever likely to hear this side of the Zuider Zee. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - September 01 2024 at 04:58 |

FOR ABSENT FRIENDS Not a Genesis tribute band, but a Dutch Neo Prog band from Rotterdam, Europe's busiest port and home to The Witt Huis (The White House), the first high-rise building in Europe. Rotterdam is also well-known for its statue of Santa Claus, although the cheeky locals know it by a rather rude name which is best left to the imagination. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Santa Claus statue in Rotterdam ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 31 2024 at 10:46 |

FOCUS It's time now to Focus attention on the combined talents of Jan Akkerman & Thijs van Leer as we set sail on the Ship of Memories for a voyage of discovery across the Moving Waves of Dutch Prog, where just Beyond the Horizon, you'll hopefully discover some magnificent Golden Oldies along the way. Yes, it's none other than the mother of all Dutch prog bands, or simply just, Mother Focus. Altogether now, "Joladadijoladadi-jo-o-ooh" ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

FLAMBOROUGH HEAD The promontory of Flamborough Head on England's east coast is one of Yorkshire's seven natural wonders. Likewise with the band Flamborough Head, who are one of the seven natural wonders of Dutch Neo Prog. I haven't gone overboard with this many 5-star ratings since Mostly Autumn, although it always helps when the band is fronted by a beautiful female singer. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

FLAIRCK A Dutch Prog Folk ensemble whose name comes about from a combination of the French word "flair" and the Dutch word "vlerk" - meaning nimble-fingered, so there you go. FIVE-O-ONE-AM You'd have to be an early riser to catch Five-O-One-AM, who were here and gone before most of us had woken up to the fact that they were one of the best Neo Prog bands of the 1990's. Or was it all just a dream? ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 13 2024 at 09:44 |

FINCH Yes, it's time now for some Symphonic Prog from a Dutch band called Finch (named after their founder and bass player Peter Fink - which is Dutch for "Finch"). Finch are Close to the Edge of topping Focus as my all-time favourite Dutch prog band, with obvious comparisons to be drawn with a well-known British Symphonic Prog band, when Time and a Word will tell whether you like this band too. Finch only have three excellent albums to savour, so there are no comeback albums with multiple changes of line-up, which brings to mind the age-old "Trigger's Broom" paradox. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

With our divergent tastes in music, it's nice to know our paths intersect at Focus, having begun their career with one of the best five-album runs in the history of prog.

I have noticed more agreement betwixt us with your high and mid-level ratings than with your low ratings. I love Focus (it was one of the first Prog bands I got into) and Hamburger Concerto is a meaty masterpiece.

ELEMENTS Can there possibly be a more Dutch-sounding name than Joost Donkersloot? He's the founder member and lead singer of Dutch Neo Prog band Elements, cleverly combining elements of Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard and Transatlantic into a unique chemical compound that's more explosively reactive than any of their constituent parts. Thunderbolt and lightning, very very enlightening. 🌟 ![]() Dutch cops on patrol in Amsterdam, where they take an altogether more lenient approach to crime. ![]() |

EKSEPTION An Ekseptional band from Haarlem led by Rick van der Linden (the Keith Emerson of The Netherlands), inventively combining jazz, classical music and prog-rock together into one powerful, heady mix and rocking and rolling their way all over Bach, Beethoven, Gershwin, Khachaturian, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and many others. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 11 2024 at 11:34 |

EARTH & FIRE It's time for the Wild and Exciting sound of Earth and Fire - one of the most highly-regarded Dutch Symphonic Prog bands, rivalled only by Focus. Earth and Fire's sublime second and third albums - Song of the Marching Children and Atlantis - feature some of their finest symphonic moments in a 20-year-long career, and Reality Fills Fantasy when it comes to their beautiful singer, Andromeda Girl Jerney Kaagman, with a lovely voice to match her stunning good looks. Looking To the World of the Future, Earth and Fire were in A State of Flux in the late 1970's, when they left their prog-rock roots behind by fully embracing the emerging disco era. At the Gate to Infinity, Earth and Fire rose from the ashes once again like a Phoenix with their ninth and final album at the tail-end of the 1970's. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The incredible journey of Jerney Kaagman - From a wild-haired, hippie love goddess to a permed-hair, spandex-wearing disco diva. ![]() |

My favorite proggish Dutch band is Golden Earring. They had several albums in a row, during the early-mid 70s that were proggish to outright prog.

DR. COENOBITE Contrary to popular belief, a coenobite is not a sea-dwelling mollusc from prehistoric times, but a member of a religious group living together in a monastic community, so I'm guessing Dr. Coenobite (Aka. guitarist Coen Vrouwenvelder) doesn't get out much. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

DIFFERENCES Differences are listed as a Neo Prog band here on PA, but there's A World of Difference between this band and a typical Neo Prog band. Differences sound better than any Neo Prog band I've ever heard, and that includes IQ, Marillion and even Magenta! I know some here (or possibly all?) will disagree with that emphatic statement, but what's the Differences between friends. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
