Prog Folk Britannia LYRIAN A Prog Folk foursome from Oxfordshire who describe themselves unselfconsciously as "wrinkled halflings", Lyrian derive their poetic name from Orpheus's harp (or lyre), added to which the four members of the band have all worked previously as lybrarians, which is especially significant in the case of the band's sole female member, Alison Felstead, who describes herself as a librarian without a bra. 2008: Lyrian - Nightingale Hall 2012: Lyrian - The Tongues of Men and Angels - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nhjpRzZnLzrz64rugmApuKT1_mQ5PgXDk 2016: Lyrian - The Jester's Quest in the City of Glass - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_m-h_Uum0df_QEM0EqnX5h18Ck2ywmVvAw 2023: Lyrian - Seven Puzzles - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kcfnnVRryZ0neQx7InuSqtEgQD6jxaqtI |

1972: Magic Carpet - Magic Carpet - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsdYZE-eb38 1996: Magic Carpet - Once Moor: Magic Carpet II MAGIC CARPET Magic Carpet were a British Psych-Folk band who - along with Quintessence - were one of the early pioneers of Indian-influenced Raga Rock. The band were led by Clem Alford, a classically trained player of the sitar, tamboura and esraj(?). The band released the self-titled "Magic Carpet" album in 1972, but broke up shortly afterwards, due to poor album sales. This rare album has since been described as "a jewelled crown in the treasure trove of psyche-tinged folk music", and deservedly so. It seemed as if the band had disappeared without trace until 1996, when Clem Alford got the band together again to record the aptly-titled "Once Moor - Magic Carpet II" album. A 1990's CD reissue of the first Magic Carpet album added the 20- minute-long "Raga" as a bonus track to the original twelve songs. Let's take a "Magic Carpet" ride to the Indian subcontinent now and have a listen to the album. The album opens with the instrumental title track "The Magic Carpet", which sets the scene (and the table) very nicely indeed. Imagine, if you will, that you've just sat down and ordered a meal at your local Indian curry house. The waiter arrives with your chicken vindaloo curry and a plate full of poppadoms with a turban-headed man dressed in a dhoti robe playing away merrily on his sitar next to your table. That's the kind of hot and spicy image this music conjures up. The next track is like "The Phoenix" rising from the ashes because that's the title of the song. It's an uplifting song featuring an Indian tabla drum and we get to hear the beautiful lilting tones of Alisha Sufit for the first time. It's a gorgeous spiritual song full of radiant beauty and love and Alisha's warm and delightful voice will carry you away to a warm and exotic place somewhere in the distant land of the Raj. "Black Cat" is another lovely Indian-themed song, served up hot and spicy at your table. Alisha Sufit's dulcet tones are very reminiscent of some of Sally Oldfield's exotic songs from her first album "Water Bearer" (1978). We're still in the exotic land of a thousand and one Indian nights with "Alan's Christmas Card", a nicely laid-back instrumental guitar and sitar number, although there's nothing particularly Christmassy about it. This charming piece of spicy exotica will put you in a mellow mood with the sound of an Indian drummer gently tapping away on his tabla drums. Try not to get too laid back and fall asleep though because we're not even halfway through the album yet. It's time to gather in the "Harvest Song" now as angelic Alisha sings "You reap what you sow, You sow what you reap". Her mellifluous rich tones are part of what makes this a very special album indeed. We're still in the land of The Far Pavillions for "Do You Hear the Words", another hot and sultry sitar number to close out Side One. A gong announces the arrival of "Father Time" to open Side Two. It's four and a half minutes of sheer delight with the ever- present sitar player and Alisha Sufit's charming voice bringing to mind evocative and exotic images of India. We're in La-La Land next for "La-La". There's no need to ask what the lyrics are about, because as you've probably guessed, the only "lyrics" are "La-La" repeated ad infinitum until the sitar player finally runs out of steam. It's still a jolly nice tune though. If you're not in a peaceful mood already, then you will be after the next spiritual song, because it's the Magic Carpet "Peace Song", which is just as relaxing and peaceful as the song title implies, so just lie back and think of India. It's time to order your "Take Away Kesh" now, because that's the title of the next song on the album. If you can't afford a trip to exotic eastern lands, then close your eyes and let this side order of Indian exotica take you there. It's time to take a trip down to your local Indian restaurant now on the "High Street", which, as I'm sure you'll guess by now, features a tabla drummer and a sitar player to entertain you while you dine on curry and poppadoms. You'll need something to quench the thirst after all that hot and spicy food, so take a good long swig of your favourite aperitif and have a listen to "The Dream", the final song on the album. Alisha's passionate and mellifluous tones are a real dream and delight to listen to and she's in unusually high voice for this divinely spiritual closing number. Wait a minute though, our magic carpet ride is not quite over yet, because there's the long bonus track "Raja", which is 20 minutes of heavenly sitar bliss! "Magic Carpet" really IS an Indian "Jewel in the Crown". It's a hot and spicy spiritual adventure, conjuring up images of exotic and distant foreign lands somewhere in the Indian subcontinent. It's not an essential prog album, because it's not in the least bit proggy, but it IS an essential Raga Rock album. Give it a listen. It might just spice up your life. |

MAGICFOLK A mystical band who swirl like a dream through the mists of time, inhabiting a fantastic world of folklore and fantasy and whose latest album "Arcadia" is so arcane and mysterious that it hasn't yet found its way onto ProgArchives. Incidentally, "Arcadia" describes a region of peaceful pleasure and tranquillity - a bit like the Moon, but with more atmosphere - which perfectly describes the gentle music of Magicfolk. 2007: Magicfolk - Magicfolk - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kI6LgKB3pPYgZUEpfMG94JMnaTsN3LQMA 2011: Magicfolk - Tales of Power - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nn6bHrU4SHEazyFaWfNlDVpRv2vJcmU0Q 2015: Magicfolk - Saltarello - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_m1yD7wBjjmAgt8uLqFieYC-OhGU1GJ39A 2022: MagicFolk - Arcadia - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mxdmf7BcWmml74KqjIi7L48MBrekcTtac |

MAGNA CARTA Magna Carta's long and illustrious career spans six decades, from the release of their first self-titled album in 1969 through to their most recent album "The Fields of Eden" in 2015. Chris Simpson is the principal songwriter and the main driving force behind the band. There have been many line-up changes over the years with Chris Simpson always there at the helm as the mainstay of the group. Guitarist Davey Johnson featured in an early line-up of the band, who later went on to achieve great success with Elton John. Linda Taylor joined the line-up in the mid-1980's and she later went on to marry Chris Simpson in 1990. MAGNA CARTA's best-known song is "Highway To Spain", released as a single from their "Midnight Blue" album in 1982. Three albums preceded the release of "Lord of the Ages" (1973). These were:- Magna Carta (Aka Times of Change) (1969); Seasons (1970): & Songs from Wasties Orchard (1971). "Lord of the Ages" is the "proggiest" of all of MAGNA CARTA's albums and represented a pinnacle of their career. The stunning 10-minute-long title track with the spoken voice introduction is the real highlight of the album. The principal three-piece line-up for the "Lord of the Ages" album consisted of:- Chris Simpson (guitar, vocals); Glenn Stuart (vocals, spoken word); & Stan Gordon (guitar, vocals), with a number of session musicians providing back-up. The only thing missing from the album is a sweet-voiced female vocalist, which would have given the album five-star masterpiece status. The fantasy artwork on the album cover was designed by Roger Dean, who famously produced album covers for YES, ASIA & URIAH HEEP, amongst others. This charming album is as English as a game of croquet with strawberries and cream on an English summer's day. The opening song "Wish It Was" sets the scene where the wistful singer paints a picture of an old man longing plaintively for lost love in these heartfelt lyrics:- "I'll find an old man lonely, In the autumn of his years, I'll find a young girl hoping, To lose herself in love, And to both I'd give a rainbow, For neither side can make it on their own, Young and old come together." Beautiful! The second song "Two Old Friends" is a sad refrain that wears its English heart on its sleeve and opens with these words:- "Two old friends of mine, I saw them only yesterday, They where there, But I got the feeling, They had gone away, And I was alone, Killing time, A stranger in the silence of their company." It's a gentle yet emotional song that really tugs at the heartstrings. Now comes the piece-de-resistance of the album, the title track "Lord of the Ages". This epic 10-minute-song opens beautifully in a long spoken word introduction in a charming cut-glass English accent. This magnificent song conjures up crystal-clear images of fantasy castles filled with goblins, elves, unicorns, and other such mythical beings. The songs opens in magical style with these words:- Lord of the ages rode one night, Out through the gateways of time, Astride a great charger, In a cloak of white samite, He flew on the air, Like a storm, Dark was the night, For he gathered the stars in his hand, To light a path through the sky, While the hooves of his charger, Made comets of fire, Bewitching all eyes, Beheld them, Lord of the ages, Nobody knows, Whether he goes." It's a bewitching song of phantasmagorical splendour, designed to transport you to a magical place during 10 minutes of sublime delight, including a wild acid guitar break. The album continues with the quaintly titled "Isn't It Funny (And a Little Bit Strange)", which ambles along nicely and features these silly and whimsical lyrics:- "I asked a coalman just for a laugh, How many times did he take a bath, As many times said he, as the bath takes me, Isn't it funny, and not a little bit strange, Like a biscuit on a plane, going south to the sun." It's a silly little song that delights in its English frivolity. We now come to Song No. 5 on the album, "Song of Evening" a very pleasant ballad with a countrified slide guitar sound, which opens with these lovely lyrics in the chorus:- "Then the song of the evening comes in, gentle harmony and lingers 'til the closing of the day, Just a song of evening flows on, Like some tumbling river, and like a river, flows away." It's another lyrical song guaranteed to charm and delight the listener in equal measure. The next song "Father John" is a heartfelt plea to a parish priest, which opens with a beautiful rare female vocal lead. The only pity is that the unknown female vocalist wasn't featured more on this superb album, which could have elevated the album to a five-star classic. The penultimate song "That Was Yesterday" features the nostalgic vocalist imploringly wishing for times gone by with these appealing words:- "Hopes and schemes, Like old men's dreams, Some have gone astray, The world could never change you said, But that was yesterday." A song with a powerful message that times don't always change for the better, which will resonate with many listeners. The final song "Falkland Grene" is a traditional acoustic Folk ballad, which was recorded way back when people still thought the Falkland Islands were somewhere just off the coast of Scotland, long before they were put on the world map in 1982. This is timeless English Folk music with charming lyrics that wouldn't have sounded out of place at the signing of the original Magna Carta treaty in 1215. This marvellous album is truly the "Lord of the Ages" that will linger in the memory for a long time to come and is sure to garner new fans of classic Prog-Folk in the decades ahead. GUY MANNING A big guy with a big heart and co-founder of The Tangent, Guy Manning decided to approach prog from a new angle, forming his own distinctive band which he proudly named after himself. Manning ingeniously combines the finest elements of Prog Folk and Symphonic Prog together into one glorious whole. Symphonic Folk, maybe? With fifteen albums released so far, but only three albums currently available on YouTube, Manning's albums are as hard to come by as a bacon sandwich in a vegan snack bar. 1999: Guy Manning - Tall Stories for Small Children 2003: Guy Manning - The View from My Window - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab1QkxWSm-Q 2007: Guy Manning - Songs from the Bilston House - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxvHWn1uQ8U Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 06 2024 at 16:22 |

MARIE CELESTE Ship Ahoy! Marie Celeste were an obscure Psych-Folk band who were lost at sea in the flood of early 1970's folk albums, but thanks to the modern wonder of the Internet, they've now been dredged up from the deep for a new generation of listeners. Not much is known about Marie Celeste, making them as mysterious and enigmatic as the original ghost ship of the same name. 1971: Marie Celeste - And Then Perhaps - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLG-InimcgCwOdda6Oa9uA9AH6A8IJRKdJ And Then Perhaps, the mystery is solved... Coming up next, the man you've all been waiting for:- Multi-instrumentalist and occasional tambourine player Dave Bainbridge. No man is an island, especially not when he's a member of a band called Iona.

DAVE BAINBRIDGE Slightly out of sequence, but better late than never..... Primarily known as a keyboard player, multi-instrumentalist Dave Bainbridge is on the Highway to Heaven when it comes to religious prog (God Prog, maybe?), recruiting some of his bandmates from Iona for his "solo" albums, including Joanne Hogg, David Fitzgerald and Troy Donockley. JOHN MARTYN England's answer to Van Morrison, John Martyn (1948-2009) was a singer/songwriter/guitarist whose diverse albums constantly crossed the nebulous boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues, and if you only listen to two John Martyn albums, then check out the two charming 1970 albums he recorded with his then-wife at the time, Beverley Martyn. MARY JANE Not to be confused with the funky, all-girl and all-American Mary Jane Girls, Prog Folk band Mary Jane are two girls and three boys who perform in bars and clubs around their local area of Portsmouth and Southampton where they're no doubt popular with the drunken sailors on shore leave, making a welcome distraction from swilling down their navy rum ration and getting generally plastered. MATTHEWS' SOUTHERN COMFORT A folk rock band led by Iain Matthews, an early member of Fairport Convention who appeared alongside Judy Dyble on their first self-titled album and then with Sandy Denny on their second album, "What We Did on Our Holidays". Matthews' Southern Comfort somehow managed to record three albums in 1970 - just like Fairport Convention in 1969 - although the first self-titled MSC album was actually an Iain Matthews solo album. The fittingly-titled "Second Spring" album followed and later that same year, and in a flash of inspiration, MSC released the imaginatively-titled album, "Later That Same Year". Matthews' Southern Comfort then took a long extended break on the tropical island of Hiatus before returning with another album in the mid-1990's, and you can take (southern) comfort from the fact that Iain Matthews is still very much alive and kicking at the age of 78, having just released The Woodstock Album of innovative cover versions in 2023. 1970: Matthews' Southern Comfort - Matthews' Southern Comfort - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nFfamhMaEaFM3KBetLVjpM8N4i0CUYuQQ 1970: Matthews' Southern Comfort - Second Spring - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nveDnWX2mNVudF9yEPwNE7Rn6abpNYgck 1970: Matthews' Southern Comfort - Later That Same Year - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_myic50U6dTZ5kJvdtu6vrtNES7__XRifE 1994: Matthews' Southern Comfort - Scion - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mEDKID3-tTOpOZU_3x6rmyjvzsoJXINuc 2010: Matthews' Southern Comfort - Kind of New - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kudroahgAaYk27CBb3YeZiNEACI0YY174 2018: Matthews' Southern Comfort - Like a Radio - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k5oczYuE_PF5fsyQBno7jW5oEB5wb_lg0 2020: Matthews' Southern Comfort - The New Mine - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nODm_vKYBd0pUmtKjxiG2W6pdoOBcsZzQ 2023: Matthews' Southern Comfort - The Woodstock Album - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_ldzupJX0kZHmWyTkeomYfaqLcQ-OydaRI Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 15 2024 at 11:30 |

SHELAGH MCDONALD An obscure Scottish folk singer through whom the spirit of Sandy Denny lives on. Shelagh McDonald recorded two charming albums in the early 1970's before mysteriously disappearing (reportedly due to a bad acid trip) during the recording of her third album, only to miraculously re-emerge again over thirty years later, so why not give her three lovely albums a listen - if you have the thyme, rhyme and reason. 1970: Shelagh McDonald - Album - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lW-y8m2stJYsXkj5d2wYTpIFtLPreJB4o 1971: Shelagh McDonald - Stargazer - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kPwYzfX2NBkibrxpcJZV5dPMx3hEeyUQc 2005: Shelagh McDonald - Let No Man Steal Your Thyme - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lzaAcBpEGPWjZEPkwPUt8Qq6Qjw1DnDrE Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 23 2024 at 06:57 |

Prog Folk Britannia 1972: Mellow Candle - Swaddling Songs - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kvDMKrNZ-rO9Flk-1mCkah0GARwoLVh0Y MELLOW CANDLE Mellow Candle were an Irish Prog-Folk quintet whose flickering flame burned briefly but brightly in 1972 with the release of their one and only studio album, "Swaddling Songs", which has since become a treasured classic amongst Prog-Folk connoisseurs. The band were led by two sweet-voiced Irish songstresses, Clodagh Simonds (who also played piano, harpsichord and mellotron on the album) and Alison Williams, with a guitarist, bass player and drummer completing the traditional five-piece line-up. The band members were surprisingly young, with Clodagh Simonds being just 15 years old and still at school at the time when the band first got together in 1968 to record their first single "Feelin' High", a song later added as a bonus track to the CD re-issue of "Swaddling Songs". For collectors, a Mellow Candle compilation album "The Virgin Prophet" was released in 1996, containing previously unreleased material and alternative early versions of songs from the classic "Swaddling Songs" album. It's Bach to the Future for some classically-inspired Folk with our first angelic song, "Heaven Heath". There are definite shades of Fairport Convention's classic "Fotheringay" to be heard here. Fotheringport Confusion, maybe. The gorgeous female harmonies and the tinkling sound of the harpsichord give the music the kind of playful pastoral aura that Mr J.S. Bach might have aired on his G-string. The gentle bucolic melody conjures up images of a sun-kissed golden meadow where sheep may safely graze. If Heaven was a place on Earth, then "Heaven Heath" would make the perfect musical accompaniment in the Garden of Eden. Red sky at night, shepherd's delight, and for *shear* musical delight, comes "Sheep Season", a charming and romantic mellow melody that's as reassuringly comforting as being swaddled in a warm woolly blanket in front of a roaring log fire. This outstanding sheep-shearing song also features a simply sublime guitar solo in the style of Fairport Convention's Richard Thompson, and if you listen carefully, you can hear the celestial sound of a mellotron too. There's more rapturous sweet nectar on the way with "Silver Song", a bright and shining piano ballad bathed in warm golden strings, that's so beautifully uplifting, it brings to mind the awe-inspiring music of Renaissance with the soaring siren-song voice of Annie Haslam. The swirling and echoey twin harmonies of Clodagh Simonds and Alison Williams are like manna from Prog-Folk heaven here. The gorgeous spectrum of music contained within this treasured album is so far proving to be as pleasing to the ears as the Technicolour riot of the Chelsea Flower Show is pleasing to the eyes, only without the huge crowds and the hayfever and the sight of someone stumbling facedown drunk into the flowerbeds. It's Every Witch Way But Loose now: the witches are on the loose as the album takes a quirky and slightly sinister turn with some spooky Halloween antics in "The Poet and the Witch". The music is an off-kilter Witches Brew of constantly yo-yoing vocals, ranging from very high to very low, in a creepy Comus "First Utterance" kind of way. This offbeat song is unlikely to give you nightmares though as Clodagh and Alison are clearly angelic white witches blessed with heavenly voices, and the music is no more scary than a box of Black Magic chocolates. Flying into view now in magnificent plumage are the "Messenger Birds", a gently rippling piano and guitar piece featuring soaring ethereal vocals which ascend up into the heavens in the best traditions of classic Renaissance. This sparkling Emerald Isle jewel is the kind of heaven-sent music that blissful sweet dreams are made of. It's as joyously uplifting as a jubilant 2020 street party to celebrate the end of the coronavirus lockdown, with hugs and kisses all 'round, but only with *really* close neighbours. We're coming back down to earth now with some very conventional folky fare in the shape of "Dan the Wing", which draws obvious comparisons with Fairport Convention's "Tam Lin". This Folk song sounds so traditionally English, it brings to mind gaily-dressed (and occasionally gay) Morris Men - adorned with colourful bell pads and tassels - merrily gallivanting around the Maypole in the pub car park, whilst in the meantime, any self-respecting Englishmen have already beaten a hasty retreat inside the pub to escape them. "Reverend Sisters" is another soothing piano ballad in the classic Renaissance mould, sprinkled with some magical Mellow Candle fairy dust. The gentle tinkling of the ivories combined with the lilting honey-toned voices of Clodagh and Alison, reminds one of "The Sisters" from the Renaissance "Novella" album. This haunting refrain washes over the listener like a gently rippling stream with heavenly harmonies to die for. It's a typical Irish Catholic tale of strict paragons-of-virtue nuns trying to steer their schoolgirls away from adopting any naughty black habits. We're breaking the spell now with "Break Your Token", which is a return to more traditional folky fare, with those eccentric off-kilter vocals again giving the music a certain edginess, and "Buy or Beware" continues in the same vein, with lyrics that appear to be an attack on rampant consumerism, long before anti-capitalist demonstrations became en-vogue for extreme left-wingers everywhere, although one feels the protests are not so much aimed at consumerism generally, but more likely aimed at the "Greed is Good" ethos of bank- busting rogue traders like Nick Leeson in their loud stripy suits, or Gordon Gecko Wall Street types in their bright red braces and sw**ky offices. Anyway, back to the music, and this classic Prog-Folk album is well-worth ten pounds, ten dollars or ten euros of anyone's money, whatever your political views. From the economic to the esoteric now with "Vile Excesses", an enigmatic fairytale centred around shadows of unicorns and crowns of thorns, although judging from the song title, there's a cryptic environmental message contained within the lyrics somewhere. Again, this charming song is a wonderful spellbinding cross between Renaissance and Fairport Convention with a light sprinkling of Pentangle and Trees thrown in too. The penultimate song "Lonely Man" represents a departure from Folk into moody bluesier territory, although the twin harmonies of the two female leads sound just as enchanting as ever on this melancholic refrain. Finally, "Boulders on My Grave" takes off on a Pentangly Light Flight of fancy in a lively uptempo rocker that's very reminiscent of the vocalese style of Annie Haslam. Fittingly, "Boulders on My Grave" turns out to be the rockiest rolling stone on the entire album and it's a real album highlight. This is where the band really get to light things up for a fiery finish by burning the (Mellow) Candle at both ends, so to speak. This precious one-off album is a true lost and found gem in the vast pantheon of Folk-Rock. Mellow Candle have graced the Prog-Folk stage with this rather special album of warm and comforting "Swaddling Songs". This delightful collection of whimsical evergreen melodies and sugar-sweet harmonies from a bygone age is a rare and revered album to treasure for all time. It's a timeless album with all of the enduring appeal of a United Nations world heritage site, provided the Taliban doesn't come along and blow it up. You're as unlikely to find this rare album at a bargain-price charity shop or thrift store as finding a mad mullah presiding over a bar mitzvah. |

Prog Folk Britannia MESSENGER The loudest Prog Folk band you've ever likely to hear! Messenger describe themselves as dwellers in the earthly realm of folk music who cross the celestial void into progressive psychedelia. Either way, they're far more worthy than Jethro Tull of winning a Grammy Award for best Heavy Metal band. 2014: Messenger - Illusory Blues - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPC0_RMgfFPFeH3wiHNwTjH-IrXVUBahX 2016: Messenger - Threnodies Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 24 2024 at 11:37 |

MIDWINTER A band for all seasons..... The Waters of Sweet Sorrow is a mystical album of medieval folk tunes played on traditional instruments accompanied by the hauntingly beautiful ethereal tones of Jill Child, whose voice is blessed with the crystal clarity of a wine glass. Midwinter's one and only album was recorded back in 1973, but not released until 1993, although sounding like it could've been recorded during a bacchanalian feast in 1653. 1973: Midwinter - The Waters of Sweet Sorrow - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_n__A4bdbxtguCSktfwRzaEN7rf0EHkWms

COLIN MOLD Now you see him, now you don't..... There's no sign at all of Colin Mold's first album "Water of Divinity" (2007) on YouTube and only a light sprinkling of tracks available from his second album "Girl on the Castle Steps", but his third album is there in full and very good it is too. Recorded and produced in Colin Mold's home studio, "Now You See Me" impresses with its fine musicianship (with Michelle Glover providing backing vocals) which really breaks the mould of previous Prog Folk albums in the same way as Mostly Autumn, Iona and Karnataka, who Colin once toured with between 2010 & 2012. Whereas more traditional folk albums may be content to tootle along the highway at a leisurely 60mph, Colin Mold is in a Mercedes Benz S class, cruising down the autobahn at 100mph. MOONSWIFT & SAND SNOWMAN Not much is known about the weirdy-beardy duo behind the spooky, but hauntingly-beautiful Psych-Folk of Moonswift & Sand Snowman - when even their videos are obscured by hazy colours and fuzziness - but I'm guessing they're not the names they use on their tax returns. THE MORRIGAN The Morrigan was a renowned Celtic goddess associated with war, destiny and fertility. The Morrigan band had a fertile existence too, producing five offspring (or albums) over the course of two decades. They've been described as being like a heavier and proggier version of Steeleye Span, but at least you won't have another Christmas ruined by hearing the mournful dirge "Gaudete" again for the umpteenth time when you listen to The Morrigan. 1985: The Morrigan - Spirit of the Soup - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nOfXxNjLBCyEUNI_oUPXfoUiUXVXfne_E 1990: The Morrigan - Rides Out - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lFfI5PStbtO0EE3-LvPX1Xn4Gck8gSoI0 1995: The Morrigan - Wreckers - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mdXpa1gE7NvUYMTF-39Q1_LWu0tvoIxFI 1998: The Morrigan - Masque - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nDr8Fvbc-jCkaN8G2zaR6PjXX-AjtK0i8 2002: The Morrigan - Hidden Agenda - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4jCGws80PfJsUn8-VmRoylDwakAwNBWq |
