I'll admit I just ignored it. Less than three stars is to low for to me contribute in a meaningful way, so I focussed on the "a little underrated" part.

I can also tell that the 3 stars criterium makes this thread more meaningful to me, even difficult to answer. Smile

I like the added criteria and challenge, otherwise this would be just another rehash of a topic we have had many times before.  If not everyone follows the expectations, so be it, par for the course (especially as it is common for people not to read the first post before responding to the topic's title) but I like the concept.  While I would get rid of being able to give topic stars if I could (or if Max allowed me to) as it sometimes has been abused, or perhaps just plain used, as tackily self-congratulatory or in a vindictive manner by others, I'm also giving this topic five stars.

So I would always at least look at both RYM and PA ratings, unless otherwise is stated in the OP.

Can anybody rate a topic, or whose rating is shown in the overview of Forum Topics?

^ That's right.  And any registered and logged in member can rate a topic.  If that can be changed, it might well be a good thing.

Only 12 years, but actively much less, for me, and didn't know either.

Thanks, and I'd at least say, it's very questionnable.

It didn't take long for me to find A LOT of albums which score less than 3 stars in PA that I feel should be much higher. Not surprisingly, most are post-1980 albums, so go ahead and dismiss me as someone who loves 1980s-1990s junk!

Albums I would rank 5 stars (followed by PA rating):

1. Genesis - Abacab (2.61)
2. Moody Blues - Strange Times (2.67)
3. Alan Parsons Project - Stereotomy (2.77)
4. Steve Hackett - Till We Have Faces (2.44)
5. Mike Oldfield - Heaven's Open (2.50)
6. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Criminal Tango (2.52)
7. E.L.P. - Black Moon (2.77)
8. Asia - Alpha (2.87)
9. FM - City of Fear (2.97)

Albums I would rank 4 stars (followed by PA rating):

1. Genesis - Shapes (2.79)
2. Saga - Wildest Dreams (2.76)
3. Moody Blues - Keys of the Kingdom (2.80)
4. Alan Parsons Project - Vulture Culture (2.40)
5. Steve Hackett - Cured (2.42)
6. Mike Oldfield - Islands (2.63)
7. Anthony Phillips - Invisible Men (2.34)
8. Asia - Astra (2.59)

Albums I would rank 3 stars (followed by PA rating):

1. Supertramp - Free as a Bird (1.89 - this is just cruel!)

Peter Hammill's "The Love Songs" is sheer beauty. A top 3 album of all time.

I understand that the shift in sound between Triumvirat's Spartacus and Old Loves Die Hard will disappoint cfans of the grand trio, but I'm not too worried about a change in sound if they can justify it, and I think this fourth album ended up better than the debut and almost as good as Spartacus.  But NONE OF THEM hold a candle to Illusions on a Double Dimple.

King Crimson's "Starless and Bible Black."  I really don't understand all of the love given to "Red!"  "Red" is a very fine LP, but with a few weak moments, and I don't think it is as muscular or innovative as S&BB!

Off the top of my head:

King Crimson - Three of a Perfect Pair

Camel - Dust and Dreams (although probably more than just a little- I know some people think it's too mellow and slow but for me this is one of my favorite Camel albums and I even like it better than Rajaz)

Yes - Tormato   A really special album that had to grow on me. I admit I didn't care for it at first but over time it revealed it's magic.
"     - Big Generator Almost like love is a little bit awkward but overall I really like everything on this album a lot and think it gets unfairly panned these days.

Marillion - Clutching At Straws     I know it's probably not underrated on this site but typically Misplaced Childhood is considered their best or at least most commercially successful. This one is darker, goes deeper and doesn't let up. My favorite Marillion album for sure.

Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun    At the time it was well received but these days it's been overshadowed by In Absentia and everything after that one. I guess you could say most of their pre In Absentia albums are underrated now.

Anthony Phillips - The Geese and the Ghost  You don't hear much about this one but I like it a lot. Some great moments on here.

Banco - ...Di Terra    I haven't heard it in a long time and I no longer own it but this is one of the best instrumental albums of all time in my opinion. Most people praise the first three a lot and those are great but to me this one is more refined and more consistent. It's a bit different from other Banco albums because the wonderful vocals of Francesco Di Giacamo (RIP) are absent.

Alan Parsons Project - Irobot    I think because it's a bit on the poppy side it gets overlooked by many prog fans.

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother       I probably prefer it to Meddle.

Tangerine Dream - Exit    A long time favorite that I've probably heard too many times. I know it's a bit different and not as proggy as the few before it (more modern and more proto techno) but I like it anyway.

Because it is very rock-oriented and blends wonderfully simplicity and complexity.

I guess that is the point, it is too rock-oriented!  S&BB blends live footage (Fracture), incredible lyrics (Night Watch), muscular jazz-rock (Great Deceiver), and brilliant musicianship throughout.

I see "Red" as a step backward for the band, although "Starless" is one of the best songs ever recorded by this lineup.

Thanks, I'm also a "Tormato" fan!  I've found that much of the material was better in concert than on the disc, particularly "Whale!"

I like all of the 1969 to 1974 King Crimson albums, but return to Starless and Bible Black the least of those. Red is a masterpiece to me. I love Lizard and Islands. I don't think I'm generally that keen on muscular music or muscular things generally. Oh, Arnold says, "Hasta la vista, I'll be back" and that we should get to the Chopper (one of PA's old-school members I guess he means)...
