To appease the Prog Gods on Mount Olympus, it's time to spread some love and joy by celebrating some of our religious prog favourites, and what better place to start than Barclay James Harvest's epic paean to God, Love and Jesus.
Altogether now..... Valley's deep and the mountain's so high If you want to see God you've got to move on the other side You stand up there with your head in the clouds Don't try to fly you know you might not come down Don't try to fly, dear God, you might not come down Yeah!! |

Frank Zappa "Dumb All Over"
"You can't run a country by a book of religion Not by a heap or a lump or a smidgeon Of foolish rules of ancient dates Designed to make you all feel great While you fold spindle and mutilate Those unbelievers from a neighboring state" Edited by Grumpyprogfan - June 27 2024 at 04:48 |

^ BJH's Live version of Hymn is worth it just to hear the audience joining in at the end of every chorus with a celebratory "Yeah".
Here's another religious Live favourite from Barclay James Harvest - after the 30-second countdown. |

Gentle Giant-Words From The Wise-kind of a critique of religion, which is apt coming from me, as I am an agnostic...

My God, I'd completely forgotten about that song, even though I have the Aqualung album in my CD collection. |

Somewhere but Yesterday by Citizen Cain is quite an oddball religious prog song if you ask me.
Because, even though it's filled with biblical references and religious imagery, it's essentially a "protest song" against the hypocrisy and oppression of the Christian Church, particularly its stance on witchcraft. |

Not only "My God" but most of Tull's music of that era had some criticism to religion. a Passion Play, War Child, etc. all have a song or more that express Ian anderson's point of view on religion.

Although not considered prog (but enjoyed by THIS prog listener) is Juno Reactor's "God is God" -- especially for the vocals of Natacha Atlas, who does some incredible one-breath, sustained runs a full 6 measures long... Edited by wiz_d_kidd - June 27 2024 at 08:18 |
