Ther's more than one in the list to whom I can't get into. But I think Queensryche is the one.
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

There is something to appreciate (at least some songs or entire albums) in most of these and some that I enjoy very much. I hesitate here to vote for either The Flower Kings or Transatlantic: two of the most exquisite "prog by numbers" bands that exist, in my opinion. I'll give it to TFK...

Quite a few in here that I tried and didn't click with; I think most of these were the first wave of 'prog dissilusionment' that pushed me towards the more 'out there' bands in your other lists. In particular, I tried but didn't get far with Eloy, Dream Theatre, ELP, Ozric, Kansas.

In the end I gave my vote to Ozric, but it was close amongst all 5 of those.

I've looked at this list a few times now and I really can't think of any that I actually dislike, but ranking them in order at the bottom of my list would be Ozric Tentacles.

I'm not pulling any punches because some of my favourite bands (Rush, Eloy and BBT especially) are picking up votes.

Mahavishnu without a doubt. Off the scale amazing playing that goes nowhere, drowning in a sea of dazzling pyrotechnics. That said I could easily have voted for Transatlantic, probably the least interesting so called 'supergroup' in the history of music. Prog by numbers.

Same.  Never managed to develop a taste for The Mars Volta.  Great band name though.

I guess that some of these votes are the result of people who don't read the OP, nor the poll question, and who just voted for the band they prefer... (since that's what polls generally ask for). It's Pavlovian...

Like me, for instance, when I voted for Tangerine Dream in the previous poll. Ouch

Complaints I have read outside of this forum about the Prog Archives forum concern us being too list obsessed, too poll obsessed, and not having enough actual discussion about music. I do think things like Twitter and polls, and Smart Phones generally, have shortened people's attention spans and sense of exploration, so they are more likely to react than read and think first. It's become more of a fast food culture, and I do understand that people's time is precious (mine is worth at least a shekel an hour) and often people are posting using phones and things while doing other things. It does feel like discussion forums have becomes less about conversation and exploring ideas over time and more about just reacting and going through routines. Not bad for me because I'm not very good at conversation, at thinking things through well, and expressing myself when it comes to music. Maybe one day all posts will be generated by AIs to impress other AIs. ;) That said, it's clear in this thread and others that many do read and are thoughtful when it comes to their responses, and the art of conversation is hardly dead. Not surprisingly, it seems to be mostly the "silent" voter type (not a practice I got into) who have seemed really careless from my observations over the years. I appreciate Paul's honesty. Some have become angry at me, or taken issue with me, for "fooling them" or doing it differently than the norm, by not just doing another favourite or best poll despite that I had specified the expectations in the OP and poll question. This place can become too routine, I feel.

^I don't see much difference between PA and other music discussion websites. Most have top ten, best of, and favorite polls. I agree that polls becomes routine but nothing can change that.

I remember your thread that asked to pick favorite songs from a certain period of time. It was very interesting, and yet there was hardly any participation. It was an attempt to discuss music and I enjoyed it.

PA is still the best prog music site in my eyes. Most forum posters are more comfortable casting a vote for a favorite than discussion.

^ I am a list maker of course, and always have liked to make lists. The forums where I have seen that sentiment did not have polls as I recall. Most recently I read such a things at progressive ears. Comments like this and maybe at reddit:
CLICK

The forums I used to belong to did not have polls, but that was late 90s to early 2000s. I really like the Prog Archives forum, and find it entertaining. I like community here even though it can be a little dysfunctional (like most any community). It's the only forum I post at or want to post at now. I have also seen claims that the topics are not as interesting here than at certain other forums, but I don't find it to be so, on the contrary. It is often said the grass is [perceived as] greener on the other side of the fence, but I think some are just green with jealousy. ;) That is likely why I have been here for over 18 years, and it was great when I joined, and I still like it here very much. I actually think the discussion has rather improved when compared to, say, 2004, but maybe that's just because it improved me as part of it (I started posting in early 2005 under another account). I enjoyed those through the years topics even if few participated, and I really appreciated your participation. Anyway, I ramble.

I guess I would likely go to PE if this forum stopped existing. Ultimately I like to get recommendations and that is better when there are comments that go with lists. I post my lists more for my own purposes so that I can keep my brain in some sort of order. I actually have started creating lists just in my brain and going over them constantly. For instance a top ten keyboard player list and a top ten Pink Floyd songs and things like that. I may just be going slightly insane admittedly Smile

Looking at the topics at PE, it just feels bit more narrow than here. Lots of ones on specific bands. I also like recommendations and with that I do like comments. I like commentary; not been into the super brief one or two word style posting. I tend to go to the other extreme with bloated posts. AH well, there's beauty in variety. I would say that I make lists partially to keep my brain in order and functional. I also would say that listening to music in large part is to keep my brain in order. The patterns help with the chaos and maelstrom of my mind (to be overly dramatic). I'm ever seeking patterns. We can see them when they are not there, but making lists and listening to music helps to keep my brain in order, and I enjoy the not too taxing intellectual exercise of coming up with lists. I find it can centre me. So can doing Cryptic Crosswords etc.

Nearly all these bands get my adrenaline rolling.
The only ones I lack preference for are Eloy, Queensryche, and Uriah Help. Not bad, just not my cup of tea.

On this list I like all of these bands.  The one that I like the least is probably The Mars Volta as I find their vocals to be difficult to listen.

My favourites here are early Jethro Tull, a few Ozric Tentacles albums (not past early 90s), i enjoy various Rush (and was once a huge fan of Hemispheres), I like ELP's debut, MO's Visions of the Emerald Beyond, and liked music off Mars Volta's Frances the Mute, Bedlam, and Amputechture. I had bought a CD of De-Loused in the Comatorium in 2004 or 2005 and really disliked it. Oh, and I like various Big Big Train. .

The bands here I had the biggest issues with were...
Spock's Beard: I bought Snow on CD in 2004 or 2005 having seen it recommended to fans of Gentle Giant, and heartily disliked it.
Transatlantic: I bought SMPTe, or maybe it was Bridge Across Forever?, at the same time as Spock's beard and heartily disliked it.
The Flower Kings: I think it was Space Revolver that I bought base dona recommendation, and not for me.
Porcupine Tree: I also bought In absentia at the same time and really disliked it.

By the way, I was not being careful with money then as I was doing very well financially. I gave all those albums to a friend anyway, and hopefully he liked them.

People have pointed me, or I have pointed myself, towards music that I like of most of these subsequently (I do like to challenge myself and try more if It seems I may appeal and others make suggestions, which is a reason why I like sharing what we are into and not into -- impressions can change if one is willing to try and open-eared -- one needs the time and inclination). Usually if a band has a fairly diverse output over the years that are not just of styles anathema to me then I can find something to like. I do like to give them a fair shot and not judge too quickly based on too limited material and over too limited a time. On one day something might click and not on another.

I'll go with Transatlantic as I have tried multiple albums, and while it had its moments, I have not wanted to return to the band. Doesn't mean it won't, but if I do it likely will be because someone asks me to or because of a topic I am interested in exploring or because they make an album with Robert Wyatt, Magma, Portishead, Anna von Hausswolff, Lingua Ignota, Art Zoyd, Weyes Blood, Boards of Canada, black midi, Swans.... Morse with Lingua Ignota, that would be something.

LOL! Glad I’m not the only person who can’t stand Mars Volta.
Surprised to see so much hate for Rush and hardly any hate for ELP. I actually thought ELP would get the largest amount of disgust.
