MARY HOPKIN      Not exactly Prog Folk, but Welsh songstress Mary Hopkin is best-remembered for such perennial folk favourites as Temma Harbour, Goodbye and Think About the Children, making her just too good to overlook. Ah, those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end... Heart

HORSLIPS       Not a British band as such, but how could I NOT include one of the best Prog Folk bands from the British Isles and the second best Irish band of all time. Smile

CATHERINE HOWE       Not exactly Prog Folk, but Howe could I not include Catherine Howe!? She's been critically acclaimed in various music magazines as well as being described as one of the great unrecognised voices and a Kate Bush before her time! Catherine won an Ivor Novello award too, despite not being known for her ballet dancing - although I'm sure she looks good in a leotard, just like Kate Bush. Tongue

PETER HOWELL & JOHN FERDINANDO      A Psych-Folk duo who recorded five albums together, although only the first album was released under their own name. There's rumoured to be less than 100 pressings made of each of these five ultra-rare collectors items, so if you own any of these LP albums then you're a very lucky bunny indeed. Alternatively, you could order the entire 5-CD box set from Amazon for just £15 + £2 postage & packing - which I did just last month.  Smile

3 stars 1969: Peter Howell & John Ferdinando - Alice Through the Looking Glass - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOLtZHkRR7gANGWITB5o8sIkmkQnR6IOt
 4 stars 1969: Tomorrow Come Someday - Tomorrow Come Someday - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL90B603471371E95E
 4 stars 1973: Ithaca - A Game for All Who Know - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9A354BAD37B9D00A

Peter Howell later went on to work for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, where he produced a revamped version of the Doctor Who theme for the 1980's. Thumbs Up

LINDA HOYLE        More of a bluesy jazz singer than Prog Folk, but I have a special Affinity for Linda Hoyle's dulcet tones, so here she is. Smile

AFFINITY      If You Live for the sound of great music and you have an Affinity for Jazz-Rock, then the sweet sound of Affinity could be just the band for you. They only recorded one eponymously-titled album during their brief lunchtime in the spotlight, but Affinity are now almost as legendary as the Hound of The Baskervilles. As well as the aforementioned 1970 studio album, Affinity also recorded an album of Live Instrumentals in 1969 when singer Linda Hoyle was recuperating from a throat operation. There's also an album going back to Affinity's early Origins in the British Jazz clubs during the years 1965-67, as well as a later album of recordings from the years 1971-1972. All of these various compilations wouldn't see release until over 30 years later in the early 21st century, and interestingly, they all featured the same identical album cover tinted in various colours, with the exception of If You Live, recorded in 1968-1970.

THE INCREDIBLE STRING BAND      A core psych-folk trio of Mike Heron, Clive Palmer & Robin Williamson with a revolving door line-up of supporting players. If there's one thing that makes the ISB "Incredible", then it's having recorded twelve albums over the course of just eight years, but even more incredible, the ISB are far-removed from the Canterbury Scene, but the Archbishop of Canterbury himself (Rowan Williams) wrote an introduction to a full-length book about the band, describing them as "Holy". Hallelujah! A ringing endorsement from the Archbishop of Canterbury has got to be a good thing for a band, surely? Well, maybe not in the case of Black Sabbath. Tongue

IONA       Named after a Hebridean island, Iona were led by Joanne Hogg over the course of seven studio albums and three live albums, up until 2011 when Iona journeyed into the morn together for one last time. Since then, lovely Joanne has been Hogging the limelight again under her own name, recording a prodigious output of ten albums as a solo artist over the last quarter of a century. Hug Heart

 4 stars 1973: Ithaca - A Game for All Who Know - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9A354BAD37B9D00A

ITHACA      Ithaca (a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, featured in Homer's Odyssey) is a collaboration between John Ferdinando & Peter Howell, and sweet-voiced female vocalist Lee Menelaus. Ferdinando and Howell worked on several Psych-Folk albums together, although "A Game for All Who Know" (1973) was the only album released under the Ithaca name. The English trio had previously worked together on the Agincourt "Fly Away" (1970) album. The first release from Ferdinando & Howell was "Alice Through the Looking Glass" back in 1969 followed shortly after by "Tomorrow Come Someday" in the same year. In 1974 they released another album together under the pseudonym of "Friends" for their final musical partnership. Peter Howell later worked for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - famous for the Doctor Who TV theme - during the 1970's and he went on to record a couple of New Age albums, "Legend" (1984) and "Aquarius Rising" (1991) on the New World Music label. The Ithaca album consists of six songs with three bonus songs included in the 2004 CD reissue. If you have a copy of the original LP album, then you're a very lucky bunny indeed as there were only 99 pressings of the album at the time of its release.

Time now to see whether Ithaca is a Greek island of musical treasures or whether it's as dodgy as a Greek bearing gifts. Our journey begins with "Journey" appropriately enough. Shhhhh! It's a VERY quiet beginning. Prepare to be taken on a magic carpet ride with some lovely harmonising from the three singers, because this is beautiful English Folk music at its melodic best, with a slice of prog thrown in for good measure to spice things up. If you're familiar with the trio's previous Agincourt album from 1970, then you'll know you're in for another real treat. Our journey continues with "Questions", and there's no question that this is sublime English Folk music. Just let the music gently carry you away to a land of dreams as you listen late at night in bed with the lights turned down low. Don't forget to let the cat or dog out before you go to bed though, because this gorgeous pastoral Folk music will put you in such a relaxed frame of mind that you won't feel like getting up again. Now we arrive at "Times", the longest song on the album at over 8 minutes long. It's really two shorter songs in one though, as there's a complete change of pace midway through, beginning with a gentle ballad and emerging like a butterfly into a bright and breezy poppy number. This lovely music is enough to make you long for the warm summer days again, especially if you're listening to this album on a damp and dark November day. And now we come to "Feelings", another 2-part song, combining a ballad and a lively up-tempo number. This beautiful song is sure to inspire feelings of joy that you were lucky enough to discover this long-lost album treasure, nearly 50 years after its release. Onwards now dear friends to "Dream", with the charming and delightful lead vocals of Lee Menelaus. What a voice! Her sweet and gentle voice is perfectly suited to this charming music. And now we come to the final song on the album and the title track "A Game for All Who Know" (subtitled "Journey - Part II). The song begins intriguingly with the sound of pages turning and a swirling synth and acoustic guitar. It's a song full of mystery and imagination. There's the sound of a rocket taking off and then a reprise of the opening number of the album with the hauntingly atmospheric sound of an organ carrying the song through to its conclusion. It's idyllic, it's bucolic, and it may even be soporific, but not in a bad way. At 7 minutes long, it's a song of almost epic proportions, or as epic as a Prog-Folk song can be. It might not have the pomp and bombast of a blast of Symphonic Prog, but it's none the worse for that. After all, you may have drifted off into a sleep of blissful dreams by this stage, so you don't want to be woken up with a start, although the song does end rather abruptly, so be prepared!

Thanks to ProgArchives, YouTube & the Internet, this long-lost album treasure is now gaining some of the recognition it truly deserves. It's a charming pastoral Folk album with timeless appeal that you can come back to again and again. It's not essential if you're into Prog-Rock, but it IS essential if you want to hear a sublime slice of 1970's English Prog-Folk at its absolute best.

GORDON JACKSON       He made The Great Escape from Stalag Luft III, only to get shot for his trouble; he's been Upstairs Downstairs as Scottish butler Angus Hudson; and he was Cowley, head of CI5 in The Professionals; and he still somehow found the time to do his weekly grocery shop at Fine Fare! But no, it's not that Gordon Jackson at all (as if you hadn't already guessed), but a long-forgotten folk singer who released a solitary album on the Marmalade label -  back in the pre-PC days when Marmalade labels used to offer free golliwog badges. Tongue

J.P. SUNSHINE      If you like raw acoustic folk without any studio overdubs, then this charming album of pastoral folk tunes will appear like a bright ray of sunshine. Star

4 stars 1971: Jan Dukes de Grey - Mice and Rats in the Loft - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgQvFbGmK0E

JAN DUKES DE GREY     Jan Dukes de Grey sounds like a French nobleman, but they were actually a short-lived Prog/Psych-Folk band from Leeds in northern England. Their first album "Sorcerers" (1970) passed by virtually unnoticed at the time of its release, but their second album "Mice and Rats in the Loft" (1971) will be much more familiar to Prog/Psych-Folk fans. Both albums have since become real collectors items. They recorded a third album "Strange Terrain" in 1977, but that long-lost album wouldn't see the light of day until 2010/11. The "Mice and Rats in the Loft" album reviewed here, consists of three extended songs of improvisational acid-drenched Folk:- 1. "Sun Symphonica" (18:58); 2. "Call of the Wild" (12:48); & 3. "Mice and Rats in the Loft" (8:19).

The outlook for "Sun Symphonica" is for bright and sunny spells of long pastoral flute passages with occasional outbreaks of classically-inspired orchestral showers. Just as the song title implies, "Sun Symphonica" is a radiant sunburst symphony of sound, featuring flutes, clarinets, saxophones, harmonicas, violins and hyperactive percussion in abundance. It's very bold and brassy, but it's also very sophisticated and classy, mainly due to the ornate chamber music from the orchestra. Some of the exotic musical passages sound faintly middle eastern, conjuring up bizarre images of a Turkish bazaar where one is expected to haggle over the price of a carpet, whilst the vendor puffs away calmly on a hookah pipe. The music is a veritable potpourri of musical styles, combining pleasant strolls through golden meadows of woodwinds amidst glorious showers of lush strings and vibrant percussion. The song as a whole is a very pleasant confection that's as sweet and exotic as a box of Turkish Delights.

The next song "Call of the Wild" is nothing to do with wolves barking at the moon. No, this is more of a call of the wild in human terms with the lyrics apparently advocating free love and a freeing of the spirit:- "I will be free to sleep where I want and with who and what I will." ..... If the promiscuous lyrics are anything to go by, the northern town of Leeds in the seventies was just as footloose and fancy free as proverbial swinging London in the sixties, so maybe it's not so grim up north after all. The music is pretty wild and swinging too, consisting mainly of lively bursts of infectious fluty Folk blended together with a liberal dose of saxophonic jazz in a musical tour de force. Think of Jethro Tull combined with Soft Machine, and that's the kind of Jazzy Psych-Folk you have here.

And now we come to the title track: "Mice and Rats in the Loft". If you really DO have mice in the loft, here's a handy hint: mice absolutely love chocolate, far more than cheese, so if you want to catch mice humanely, just bait the walk-in trap with some hot chocolate powder and they'll be queuing up to get into the trap and the trapdoor will close behind them. You can then let them out later in a rodents version of the "Catch and Release" program. Anyway, back to the music after that brief digression. This is where the musicians really get to let their hair down and go off on an improvisational free-for-all. The wacky over-the-top singer sounds like he's on a mad LSD trip here and the weird psychedelic Jazz sounds as wild and crazy as bats in the belfry, or mice and rats scampering about in the loft.

Jan Dukes de Grey appear to have invented a whole new genre of music with their unique "Mice and Rats in the Loft" album. The music can best be described as Psychedelic Jazz-Folk. Sometimes, the music is rousing and spectacular, and sometimes it's pleasant and pastoral, and maybe it's even weird and wonderfully zany at times too, but it's NEVER dull.

JAN & LORRAINE     From whence they came, no one knows for sure. It's rumoured Jan & Lorraine could be from the Great White North of Canada, but just like gypsies, their past was shrouded in mystery. One thing we do know is that Gypsy People was recorded in London, but once Jan & Lorraine packed away their instruments and left the studio, their future destination was equally unknown. But Jan & Loraine left behind a stunning, psychedelicised folk album of fiery, shimmering beauty, sounding as thrilling and exotic today as an ancient Gypsy dance around a Turkish campfire. From Canada with Love, maybe. Heart
