   I'll explain what I mean by this by giving 2 examples for "Band Salad".
Example 1:
Gong. There are several related bands with "Gong" in their name: Mother Gong, New York Gong, Gongzilla, Planet Gong, and of course the original "Gong". (Some might name "Pierre Moerlen's Gong", but that's not the original name of the band; they just named themselves "Gong" under his direction).
Example 2:
Amon Düül. This is even more complicated. There is Amon Düül, who split up, and one half of them named themselves "Amon Düül 2". The band who stuck with the original name released only one recording, "Psychedelic Underground". All other records of this band, like "Collapsing" or "Singvögel Rückwärts", are "posthumous" and stem from a 1968 session of them. Amon Düül 2 lived much longer and recorded a lot of albums. And now it gets really complicated. Ex bass-player Dave Anderson (who had left Amon Düül 2 after "Yeti" and went to Hawkwind) and guitar player John Weinzierl formed a British branch of Amon Düül, who published the albums "Hawk Meets Penguin", "Meetings With Men-Machines (Unremarkable Heroes of the Past)", "Die Lösung", "Fool Moon" and the sampler "Airs on a Shoestring". So there are Amon Düül, Amon Düül 2 and the Britsh Amon Düül (in which, interestingly enough, Robert Calvert of Hawkwind, Guy Evans of Van der Graaf Generator and members of the Ozric Tentacles played). Somebody please sort this family maze out. There also was a short-lived band named "Amon Din", in which some Amon Düül members played.
Oh, and just to add to the confusion about Amon Düül: Around the time Amon Düül 2 recorded "Wolf City" there was a quarrel in the band, and some split and created a band named Utopia. But while Utopia recorded their first and only self-titled album, the quarreling members of Amon Düül 2 made peace again, which resulted in all of them playing on that Utopia project too. The only album of Utopia was later re-issued under the name Amon Düül 2. And one title of Utopia, "Deutsch Nepal", also appeared on "Wolf City", but in a slightly different version (most notably other vocals, though with the same lyrics). Man, am I confused now!
