what is that album(s) that was actually recorded live, but was almost marketed as just "the next album?" to boot, also contains great sound quality and mostly original songs
off the top of my head... Roxy & Elsewhere, in NY, Sheik, & Broadway by Zappa |

first two coming to mind
ELP's Pictures at an Exhibition Maneige's Composite. Also Lasting Weep's Spectacle de l'Albatros (though a very posthumous release) Out Of Focus' Live Palermo 72 (only two travks - out of 6 - were from studio albums)

SBB - SBB (1974) not only is it composed of never-released-before material but it's also SBB's debut release

Interesting picks, and I suppose they fit the bill. Sheik Yerbouti only kind of counts because, like many of his albums from the late 70s-early 80s, many of the basic tracks were recorded live (in this album's case, from the 1978 Hammersmith performance, available in full from the ZFT), but there are a loooooot of overdubs, much more than Roxy. And some of the tracks are just straight-up studio tracks. So I would hesitate to call that a true live album compared to Roxy & Elsewhere and certainly to NY and Broadway. Also, while much of the material on Broadway the Hard Way was not available on record at the time, several of those tracks had been played live before in previous tours. That being said, a decent amount on there was indeed unique to the final '88 touring band.

You raise good points, however, despite the overdubs and some studio tracks (thread said "mostly live") I consider Sheik a live album for its sheer reliance on live recorded basic tracks to carry that live sound throughout the record - something Hendrix would do on say... Electric Ladyland

Black Country New Road - Live At Bush Hall
Band decided not to play any of the main songwriters songs after he left the band. They wrote an albums worth of material to honor festival commitments. They then released it as a live album. |
